1 Parlò Iddio a Moisè nello diserto di Sinai nel tabernacolo del patto, il primo dì del mese secondo, nell'altro anno ch' erano usciti d'Egitto; e disse (lo Signore):	1 Yahweh spoke to Moses, in the desert of Sinai, in the Tent of Meeting, on the first day of the secondmonth, in the second year after the exodus from Egypt, and said:
2 Togliete una quantità di ogni gente de' figliuoli d'Israel, per ogni casa e congregazione loro, e tutti i nomi d'ogni maschio,	2 'Take a census of the whole community of Israelites by clans and families, taking a count of the namesof al the males, head by head.
3 da XX in su, che sia forte fra i figliuoli d'Israel; e annumeraretegli tutti quanti per le loro turme, tue e Aaron.	3 You and Aaron wil register al those in Israel, twenty years of age and over, fit to bear arms, companyby company;

The Israelitesestablished their pedigrees by clans and families, and one by one the names of all men of twenty years and overwere recorded.

48 Parlò Iddio a Moisè, e dissegli:	48 Yahweh spoke to Moses and said:
49 La schiatta di Levi non la numerare; non ne porre la loro somma cogli figliuoli d'Israel.	49 'Do not, however, take a census of the Levites, or register them with the other Israelites,
50 Ma porraili alla guardia del tabernacolo della testimonianza, e sopra tutti li suoi vasi, e tutto quello che s'appartiene alle cerimonie. Loro porte ranno il tabernacolo e ogni adornamento; e loro staranno in guardia, sempre abitandovi appresso.	50 but enrol the Levites to take charge of the Dwel ing where the Testimony is and of al its furnishingsand belongings. They must carry the Dwel ing and al its furnishings; they must look after the Dwel ing and pitchtheir camp round it.
51 E quando s'anderà, li Leviti deponeranno il tabernacolo; quando si dirizzerà le tende d'alloggiare, [ lo leveranno ]. E se alcuno istrano si sia accostato, incontanente l'uccidano.	51 Whenever the Dwelling is moved, the Levites will dismantle it; whenever the Dwel ing stops for thenight, the Levites wil erect it. Any unauthorised person coming near it will be put to death.
52 E ciascuno de' figliuoli d'Israel (per tutte le loro generazioni) porrà le sue tende per alloggiare, secondo le sue compagnie e uomini d'arme e lo suo esercito.	52 The Israelites wil pitch their tents, each in their own encampment and by their own standard,company by company,

In this way Retributionwil be kept from fal ing on the whole community of Israelites, and the Levites wil keep charge of the Dwel ing ofthe Testimony.'
54 E fecero i figliuoli d'Israel, secondo che Iddio comandò a Moisè.	54 The Israelites did exactly as Yahweh had ordered Moses. They did as he said.
