1 По тому пішов Ісус на той бік Галилейського Тиверіядського моря.	1 After this, Jesus crossed the Sea of Galilee -- or of Tiberias-
2 І йшла за ним сила народу, бачили бо чуда, які вчинив він із недужими.	2 and a large crowd followed him, impressed by the signs he had done in curing the sick.
3 Тож зійшов Ісус на гору й сів там з учнями своїми.	3 Jesus climbed the hillside and sat down there with his disciples.
4 А було вже недалеко до Пасхи, свята юдейського.	4 The time of the Jewish Passover was near.
5 Підвівши ж очі й побачивши, що сила людей іде до нього, каже до Филипа: «Де хліба нам купити, щоб оцим дати їсти?»	5 Looking up, Jesus saw the crowds approaching and said to Philip, 'Where can we buy some bread forthese people to eat?'
6 Мовив же так, іспитуючи його, знав бо сам, що має робити.	6 He said this only to put Philip to the test; he himself knew exactly what he was going to do.
7 Озвався ж до нього Филип: «Хліба й за двісті динаріїв не вистачило б, аби кожному з них хоч трохи припало.»	7 Philip answered, 'Two hundred denari would not buy enough to give them a little piece each.'
8 Але говорить до нього один з учнів, Андрій, брат Симона Петра:	8 One of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, said,
9 «Є тут один хлопчина; він має п’ять ячмінних хлібів ще й дві риби. Та що це на таку многоту!»	9 'Here is a small boy with five barley loaves and two fish; but what is that among so many?'
10 І мовив Ісус: «Веліте людям сісти.» Було ж багато трави на тому місці. Отож посідали чоловіки — числом тисяч із п’ять.	10 Jesus said to them, 'Make the people sit down.' There was plenty of grass there, and as many as fivethousand men sat down.
11 І взяв Ісус хліби й, воздавши хвалу, розподілив серед тих, що сиділи; так само й риби: скільки хотіли.	11 Then Jesus took the loaves, gave thanks, and distributed them to those who were sitting there; he thendid the same with the fish, distributing as much as they wanted.
12 Коли ж вони наситилися, то мовив до своїх учнів: «Зберіть кавалки, що позоставалися, щоб нічого не пропало.»	12 When they had eaten enough he said to the disciples, 'Pick up the pieces left over, so that nothing iswasted.'
13 Отож зібрали — і наповнили дванадцять кошів куснями ячмінного хліба, які залишилися були в тих, що їли.	13 So they picked them up and fil ed twelve large baskets with scraps left over from the meal of fivebarley loaves.
14 Люди ж, побачивши чудо, яке сподіяв Ісус, заговорили: «Це справді той пророк, що має прийти у світ.»	14 Seeing the sign that he had done, the people said, 'This is indeed the prophet who is to come into theworld.'
15 І довідався Ісус, що вони мають намір прийти й узяти його, щоб зробити царем, — і віддалився сам-один на гору знов.	15 Jesus, as he realised they were about to come and take him by force and make him king, fled back tothe hil s alone.
16 Коли ж настав вечір, учні його зійшли на морське узбережжя	16 That evening the disciples went down to the shore of the sea
17 і, ввійшовши в човен, попливли на той бік моря, до Капернауму. Уже й посутеніло, а Ісус ще не був прийшов до них.	17 and got into a boat to make for Capernaum on the other side of the sea. It was getting dark by nowand Jesus had stil not rejoined them.
18 І схвилювалося море від великого вітровію.	18 The wind was strong, and the sea was getting rough.
19 Пропливли вони з двадцять п’ять чи тридцять стадій, аж бачать — Ісус іде морем, до човна зближається, — та й налякались.	19 They had rowed three or four miles when they saw Jesus walking on the sea and coming towards theboat. They were afraid,
20 А він же до них: «Це я, не лякайтесь!»	20 but he said, 'It's me. Don't be afraid.'
21 І хотіли його взяти у човен, але човен відразу пристав до землі, до якої прямували.	21 They were ready to take him into the boat, and immediately it reached the shore at the place they weremaking for.
22 А наступного дня народ, що стояв по той бік моря, бачив, що не було там іншого човна, тільки один, до якого Ісус не ввійшов разом з учнями своїми і яким його учні відпливли самі.	22 Next day, the crowd that had stayed on the other side saw that only one boat had been there, and thatJesus had not got into the boat with his disciples, but that the disciples had set off by themselves.
23 Інші ж човни прибули з Тиверіяди близько до того місця, де їли хліб, коли то Господь склав був подяку.	23 Other boats, however, had put in from Tiberias, near the place where the bread had been eaten.
24 Отож, коли народ побачив, що нема там ані Ісуса, ані його учнів, то сіли в човни і прибули до Капернауму, шукаючи Ісуса.	24 When the people saw that neither Jesus nor his disciples were there, they got into those boats andcrossed to Capernaum to look for Jesus.
25 Знайшовши його по тім боці моря, мовили до нього: «Учителю, коли ж ти прибув сюди?»	25 When they found him on the other side, they said to him, 'Rabbi, when did you come here?'
26 А Ісус їм у відповідь: «Істинно, істинно говорю вам: Ви шукаєте мене не тому, що чуда бачили, а тому, що хліб їли та й наситилися.	26 Jesus answered: In al truth I tel you, you are looking for me not because you have seen the signs butbecause you had al the bread you wanted to eat.
27 Працюйте не на ту їжу, яка проминає, лише на ту їжу, яка залишається на життя вічне, — я	27 Do not work for food that goes bad, but work for food that endures for eternal life, which the Son ofman wil give you, for on him the Father, God himself, has set his seal.
28 Вони ж мовили до нього: «Що робити нам, щоб діла Божі чинити?»	28 Then they said to him, 'What must we do if we are to carry out God's work?'
29 А Ісус відповів і сказав їм: «Діло Боже — вірувати в того, кого він послав.»	29 Jesus gave them this answer, 'This is carrying out God's work: you must believe in the one he hassent.'
30 Тоді вони йому: «Який же знак твориш ти, щоб ми побачили й увірували в тебе? Що вчиниш?	30 So they said, 'What sign wil you yourself do, the sight of which wil make us believe in you? What workwil you do?
31 Батьки наші манну в пустині споживали, як ото написано: Дав їм хліб з неба їсти.»	31 Our fathers ate manna in the desert; as scripture says: He gave them bread from heaven to eat.'
32 Ісус же сказав їм: «Істинно, істинно говорю вам: Не Мойсей дав хліб вам з неба, лише Отець мій дає вам хліб правдивий з неба.	32 Jesus answered them: In al truth I tel you, it was not Moses who gave you the bread from heaven, itis my Father who gives you the bread from heaven, the true bread;
33 Божий бо хліб той, що з неба сходить і життя світові дає.»	33 for the bread of God is the bread which comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.
34 Мовили тоді до нього: «Господи, хліба такого давай нам повсякчасно!»	34 'Sir,' they said, 'give us that bread always.'
35 Ісус же їм: «Я — хліб життя. Хто приходить до мене — не голодуватиме; хто в мене вірує — не матиме спраги ніколи.	35 Jesus answered them: I am the bread of life. No one who comes to me wil ever hunger; no one whobelieves in me wil ever thirst.
36 Та я сказав був вам: Ви й бачили мене, а не віруєте.	36 But, as I have told you, you can see me and stil you do not believe.
37 Усе, що Отець мені дає, прийде до мене, і того, хто до мене прибуде, я не відкину;	37 Everyone whom the Father gives me will come to me; I will certainly not reject anyone who comes tome,
38 бо зійшов я з неба не для того, щоб волю власну чинити, а волю того, хто мене послав.	38 because I have come from heaven, not to do my own wil , but to do the wil of him who sent me.
39 Оце ж воля того, хто мене послав: щоб з усього, що він дав мені, я нічого не погубив, лише воскресив його останнього дня.	39 Now the wil of him who sent me is that I should lose nothing of al that he has given to me, but that Ishould raise it up on the last day.
40 Така бо воля мого Отця: щоб кожен, хто Сина бачить і вірує в нього, жив життям вічним і щоб я воскресив його останнього дня.»	40 It is my Father's wil that whoever sees the Son and believes in him should have eternal life, and that Ishould raise that person up on the last day.
41 І обурились юдеї на нього, що сказав був: «Я хліб, який з неба зійшов»,	41 Meanwhile the Jews were complaining to each other about him, because he had said, 'I am the breadthat has come down from heaven.'
42 і говорили: «Чи то ж не Ісус, син Йосифів, що його батька-матір ми знаємо? Як же він тепер твердить: Я зійшов з неба?»	42 They were saying, 'Surely this is Jesus son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know. How can henow say, "I have come down from heaven?" '
43 А Ісус їм у відповідь: «Не ремствуйте між собою.	43 Jesus said in reply to them, 'Stop complaining to each other.
44 Ніхто не спроможен прийти до мене, коли Отець, який послав мене, не приведе його, — і я воскрешу його останнього дня.	44 'No one can come to me unless drawn by the Father who sent me, and I wil raise that person up onthe last day.
45 Написано в пророків: Усі будуть поучені Богом. Кожен, хто вчув від Отця, той, навчившися, до мене приходить.	45 It is written in the prophets: They wil al be taught by God; everyone who has listened to the Father,and learnt from him, comes to me.
46 Не (кажу), щоб хтось Отця бачив, бо той тільки Отця бачив, хто від Бога.	46 Not that anybody has seen the Father, except him who has his being from God: he has seen theFather.
47 Істинно, істинно говорю вам: Хто вірує, той живе життям вічним.	47 In al truth I tel you, everyone who believes has eternal life.
48 Я — хліб життя.	48 I am the bread of life.
49 Батьки ваші манну в пустині споживали, — і померли.	49 Your fathers ate manna in the desert and they are dead;
50 Це ж хліб, що з неба сходить, щоб той, хто їстиме його, не вмер.	50 but this is the bread which comes down from heaven, so that a person may eat it and not die.
51 Я — хліб живий, що з неба зійшов. Коли хтось цей хліб їстиме, житиме повіки. І хліб, що його я дам, це — тіло моє за життя світу.»	51 I am the living bread which has come down from heaven. Anyone who eats this bread will live for ever;and the bread that I shal give is my flesh, for the life of the world.'
52 Отож юдеї заходилися сперечатись між собою, кажучи: «Як отой може нам своє тіло дати їсти?»	52 Then the Jews started arguing among themselves, 'How can this man give us his flesh to eat?'
53 А Ісус їм: «Істинно, істинно говорю вам: Якщо не споживатимете тіло Чоловічого Сина й не питимете його кров, не матимете життя в собі.	53 Jesus replied to them: In al truth I tell you, if you do not eat the flesh of the Son of man and drink hisblood, you have no life in you.
54 Хто тіло моє їсть і кров мою п’є, той живе життям вічним, і я воскрешу його останнього дня.	54 Anyone who does eat my flesh and drink my blood has eternal life, and I shal raise that person up onthe last day.
55 Бо тіло моє — їжа правдива, і кров моя — правдивий напій.	55 For my flesh is real food and my blood is real drink.
56 Хто споживає тіло моє і кров мою п’є, той у мені перебуває, а я — в ньому.	56 Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood lives in me and I live in that person.
57 Як мене Отець живий послав, і я Отцем живу, так і той хто споживає мене, житиме мною.	57 As the living Father sent me and I draw life from the Father, so whoever eats me wil also draw lifefrom me.
58 Це й хліб, що зійшов з неба. Не як ото манну їли батьки ваші, а померли: хто цей хліб споживатиме, той повіки житиме.»	58 This is the bread which has come down from heaven; it is not like the bread our ancestors ate: theyare dead, but anyone who eats this bread wil live for ever.
59 Те говорив він, коли навчав у Капернаумі, у синагозі.	59 This is what he taught at Capernaum in the synagogue.
60 Почувши це, багато з-поміж його учнів говорили: «Жорстока ця мова! Хто може її слухати?»	60 After hearing it, many of his fol owers said, 'This is intolerable language. How could anyone accept it?'
61 Ісус же, знавши в собі. що учні його обурюються з того приводу, мовив до них: «Чи вводить вас теє у спокусу?	61 Jesus was aware that his fol owers were complaining about it and said, 'Does this disturb you?
62 А коли побачите, як Син Чоловічий зноситиметься туди, де був спочатку, — що тоді?	62 What if you should see the Son of man ascend to where he was before?
63 Оживлює дух, тіло ж не допомагає ні в чому. Дух — ті слова що їх я вимовив до вас, вони й життя.	63 'It is the spirit that gives life, the flesh has nothing to offer. The words I have spoken to you are spiritand they are life.
64 Деякі з вас, однак, не вірують.» Ісус бо знав від самого початку, хто ті, які не вірують, і хто той, що зрадить його.	64 'But there are some of you who do not believe.' For Jesus knew from the outset who did not believeand who was to betray him.
65 Тож додав: «Ось чому я сказав вам, що ніхто не спроможен прийти до мене, коли йому того не буде дано Отцем.»	65 He went on, 'This is why I told you that no one could come to me except by the gift of the Father.'
66 Від того часу численні з-поміж його учнів відступилися від нього і більше з ним не ходили.	66 After this, many of his disciples went away and accompanied him no more.
67 Тоді мовив Ісус до дванадцятьох: «Невже й ви бажаєте відступитися?»	67 Then Jesus said to the Twelve, 'What about you, do you want to go away too?'
68 Але озвався до нього Симон Петро: «Господи, а до кого ж іти нам? Це ж у тебе — слова життя вічного!	68 Simon Peter answered, 'Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the message of eternal life,
69 Ми й увірували й спізнали, що ти — Божий Святий.»	69 and we believe; we have come to know that you are the Holy One of God.'
70 70 Ісус же відрік їм: «Хіба я не вибрав вас дванадцятьох? Та один же з вас — диявол!»	70 Jesus replied to them, 'Did I not choose the Twelve of you? Yet one of you is a devil.'
71 А говорив він про Юду, сина Симона Іскаріота, — той бо, один з дванадцятьох, і мав його зрадити.	71 He meant Judas son of Simon Iscariot, since this was the man, one of the Twelve, who was to betrayhim.
