1 Елігу почав говорити далі й мовив:	1 Then Elihu continued and said:
2 «Слухайте мої слова, о мудрі, | нахиліть до мене вухо, о розумні!	2 Hear, O wise men, my discourse, and you that have knowledge, hear me!
3 Бо вухо слова розрізняє, | як піднебіння куштує страву.	3 For the ear tests words, as the taste does food.
4 Розсудім разом, що є справедливе, | і визнаймо між нами, що є добре.	4 Let us discern for ourselves what is right; let us learn between us what is good.
5 Ось Іов мовив: , ,Я правий, | та Бог відмовив мені суду.	5 For Job has said, "I am innocent, but God has taken what is my due.
6 Проти свого права мав би я брехати? | Рана моя невигойна, хоч я й невинний!	6 Notwithstanding my right I am set at nought; in my wound the arrow rankles, sinless though I am."
7 Чи є десь такий чоловік, як Іов, | що глум глитає, немов воду,	7 What man is like Job? He drinks in blasphemies like water,
8 що з лиходіями товаришує | та що з безбожниками ходить?	8 Keeps company with evildoers and goes along with wicked men,
9 Він бо сказав: Нема з того користи | людині, коли догоджає Богу.	9 When he says, "It profits a man nought that he is pleasing to God."
10 Тим слухайте мене, мужі розумні! | Не може бути зла у Бозі | й у Всесильному — неправди!	10 Therefore, men of understanding, hearken to me: far be it from God to do wickedness; far from the Almighty to do wrong!
11 Він людині відплачує згідно з її ділами; | як кожний ходить, так у Бога знаходить.	11 Rather, he requites men for their conduct, and brings home to a man his way of life.
12 Воістину Бог зла не чинить, | Всесильний суду не кривить.	12 Surely, God cannot act wickedly, the Almighty cannot violate justice.
13 Хто йому довірив землю? | Хто доручив йому всесвіт?	13 Who gave him government over the earth, or who else set all the land in its place?
14 Якщо він візьме дух свій знов до себе, | до себе забере своє дихання, —	14 If he were to take back his spirit to himself, withdraw to himself his breath,
15 усяке тіло зараз же загине, | людина повернеться у порох.	15 All flesh would perish together, and man would return to the dust.
16 Отже, як маєш розум, слухай! | Вважай на моїх слів голос!	16 Now, do you, O Job, hear this! Hearken to the words I speak!
17 Чи ж міг би правити, хто ненавидить право? | Чи ж ти Сильного та Праведного осудив би?	17 Can an enemy of justice indeed be in control, or will you condemn the supreme Just One,
18 Того, що до царя мовляє: Негодящий! | А до вельмож: Безбожні! —	18 Who says to a king, "You are worthless!" and to nobles, "You are wicked!"
19 що не зважає на князів особу, | не сприяє радше багатому, ніж бідному, | бо всі вони діло рук його.	19 Who neither favors the person of princes, nor respects the rich more than the poor? For they are all the work of his hands;
20 Раптом вони вмирають, і більше їх немає; | народ бунтується посеред ночі, | без труднощів могутнього скидає.	20 in a moment they die, even at midnight. He brings on nobles, and takes them away, removing the powerful without lifting a hand;
21 Бо його очі над путями чоловіка, | він бачить кожен його крок.	21 For his eyes are upon the ways of man, and he beholds all his steps.
22 Нема ні темряви, ані глухої тіні, | де б лиходії могли заховатись.	22 There is no darkness so dense that evildoers can hide in it.
23 Він не накладає на людину строку, | щоб та ставала на суд із Богом.	23 For he forewarns no man of his time to come before God in judgment.
24 Він розгромлює без допиту вельможних, | і ставить на їхнє місце інших.	24 Without a trial he breaks the mighty, and sets others in their stead,
25 Він знає добре їхні вчинки | скидає їх одної ночі, — і топчуть їх.	25 Therefore he discerns their works; he turns at night and crushes them.
26 Як беззаконних карає їх передочима інших
27 за те, що відхилилися від нього | й ніколи про путі його не дбали,	27 Because they turned away from him and heeded none of his ways,
28 так що дійшов до нього зойк злиденних, | і він почує крик смиренних.	28 But caused the cries of the poor to reach him, so that he heard the plea of the afflicted.
29 Коли він спочиває, хто потривожити його посміє? | Коли обличчя своє сховає, хто його побачить? | Він на народи й одиниці поглядає,	29 If he remains tranquil, who then can condemn? If he hides his face, who then can behold him?
30 щоб лицемір не царював, глузуючи з народу.
31 І коли він до Бога каже: Мене обдурено! | Зла не чинитиму вже більше!	31 When anyone says to God, "I was misguided; I will offend no more.
32 Навчи мене, якщо я помилився! | Якщо вчинив несправедливість, більш не буду! —	32 Teach me wherein I have sinned; if I have done wrong, I will do so no more,"
33 то чи він, гадаєш, має тим самим відплатити? | Через те, що зневажаєш суди, | через те, що то ти вибираєш, а не я, | — скажи, отже, що знаєш!	33 Would you then say that God must punish, since you reject what he is doing? It is you who must choose, not I; speak, therefore, what you know.
34 Розумні люди мені скажуть, | і мудрий муж, що мене чує:	34 Men of understanding will say to me, every wise man who hears my views:
35 Іов говорить нерозважно, | в його словах нема глузду!	35 "Job speaks without intelligence, and his words are without sense."
36 Коли б то Іова розсліджено докладно | за відповіді, що личать людям нечестивим,	36 Let Job be tried to the limit, since his answers are those of the impious;
37 бо він до гріхів своїх додає ще бунт | і затискає кулаки при нас, | і множить слова проти Бога!»	37 For he is adding rebellion to his sin by brushing off our arguments and addressing many words to God.
