SAGRADA BIBLIA	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Depois disso, Jesus percorria a Galiléia. Ele não queria deter-se na Judéia, porque os judeus procuravam tirar-lhe a vida.	1 After this Jesus travel ed round Galilee; he could not travel round Judaea, because the Jews wereseeking to kil him.
2 Aproximava-se a festa dos judeus chamada dos Tabernáculos.	2 As the Jewish feast of Shelters drew near,
3 Seus irmãos disseram-lhe: Parte daqui e vai para a Judéia, a fim de que também os teus discípulos vejam as obras que fazes.	3 his brothers said to him, 'Leave this place and go to Judaea, so that your disciples, too, can see the works you are doing;
4 Pois quem deseja ser conhecido em público não faz coisa alguma ocultamente. Já que fazes essas obras, revela-te ao mundo.	4 no one who wants to be publicly known acts in secret; if this is what you are doing, you should revealyourself to the world.'
5 Com efeito, nem mesmo os seus irmãos acreditavam nele.	5 Not even his brothers had faith in him.
6 Disse-lhes Jesus: O meu tempo ainda não chegou, mas para vós a hora é sempre favorável.	6 Jesus answered, 'For me the right time has not come yet, but for you any time is the right time.
7 O mundo não vos pode odiar, mas odeia-me, porque eu testemunho contra ele que as suas obras são más.	7 The world cannot hate you, but it does hate me, because I give evidence that its ways are evil.
8 Subi vós para a festa. Quanto a mim, eu não irei, porque ainda não chegou o meu tempo.	8 Go up to the festival yourselves: I am not going to this festival, because for me the time is not ripe yet.'
9 Dito isto, permaneceu na Galiléia.	9 Having said that, he stayed behind in Galilee.
10 Mas quando os seus irmãos tinham subido, então subiu também ele à festa, não em público, mas despercebidamente.	10 However, after his brothers had left for the festival, he went up as well, not publicly but secretly.
11 Buscavam-no os judeus durante a festa e perguntavam: Onde está ele?	11 At the festival the Jews were on the look-out for him: 'Where is he?' they said.
12 E na multidão só se discutia a respeito dele. Uns diziam: É homem de bem. Outros, porém, diziam: Não é; ele seduz o povo.	12 There was a great deal of talk about him in the crowds. Some said, 'He is a good man'; others, 'No, heis leading the people astray.'
13 Ninguém, contudo, ousava falar dele livremente com medo dos judeus.	13 Yet no one spoke about him openly, for fear of the Jews.
14 Lá pelo meio da festa, Jesus subiu ao templo e pôs-se a ensinar.	14 When the festival was half over, Jesus went to the Temple and began to teach.
15 Os judeus se admiravam e diziam: Este homem não fez estudos. Donde lhe vem, pois, este conhecimento das Escrituras?	15 The Jews were astonished and said, 'How did he learn to read? He has not been educated.'
16 Respondeu-lhes Jesus: A minha doutrina não é minha, mas daquele que me enviou.	16 Jesus answered them: 'My teaching is not from myself: it comes from the one who sent me;
17 Se alguém quiser cumprir a vontade de Deus, distinguirá se a minha doutrina é de Deus ou se falo de mim mesmo.	17 anyone who is prepared to do his wil , wil know whether my teaching is from God or whether I speakon my own account.
18 Quem fala por própria autoridade busca a própria glória, mas quem procura a glória de quem o enviou é digno de fé e nele não há impostura alguma.	18 When someone speaks on his own account, he is seeking honour for himself; but when he is seekingthe honour of the person who sent him, then he is true and altogether without dishonesty.
19 Acaso não foi Moisés quem vos deu a lei? No entanto, ninguém de vós cumpre a lei!...	19 Did not Moses give you the Law? And yet not one of you keeps the Law!
20 Por que procurais tirar-me a vida? Respondeu o povo: Tens um demônio! Quem procura tirar-te a vida?	20 The crowd replied, 'You are mad! Who wants to kil you?'
21 Replicou Jesus: Fiz uma só obra, e todos vós vos maravilhais!	21 Jesus answered, 'One work I did, and you are all amazed at it.
22 Moisés vos deu a circuncisão {se bem que ela não é de Moisés, mas dos patriarcas}, e até no sábado circuncidais um homem!	22 Moses ordered you to practise circumcision -- not that it began with him, it goes back to the patriarchs-- and you circumcise on the Sabbath.
23 Se um homem recebe a circuncisão em dia de sábado, e isso sem violar a Lei de Moisés, por que vos indignais comigo, que tenho curado um homem em todo o seu corpo em dia de sábado?	23 Now if someone can be circumcised on the Sabbath so that the Law of Moses is not broken, why areyou angry with me for making someone completely healthy on a Sabbath?
24 Não julgueis pela aparência, mas julgai conforme a justiça.	24 Do not keep judging according to appearances; let your judgement be according to what is right.'
25 Algumas das pessoas de Jerusalém diziam: Não é este aquele a quem procuram tirar a vida?	25 Meanwhile some of the people of Jerusalem were saying, 'Isn't this the man they want to kil ?
26 Todavia, ei-lo que fala em público e não lhe dizem coisa alguma. Porventura reconheceram de fato as autoridades que ele é o Cristo?	26 And here he is, speaking openly, and they have nothing to say to him! Can it be true the authoritieshave recognised that he is the Christ?
27 Mas este nós sabemos de onde vem. Do Cristo, porém, quando vier, ninguém saberá de onde seja.	27 Yet we al know where he comes from, but when the Christ appears no one wil know where he comesfrom.'
28 Enquanto ensinava no templo, Jesus exclamou: Ah! Vós me conheceis e sabeis de onde eu sou!... Entretanto, não vim de mim mesmo, mas é verdadeiro aquele que me enviou, e vós não o conheceis.	28 Then, as Jesus was teaching in the Temple, he cried out: You know me and you know where I camefrom. Yet I have not come of my own accord: but he who sent me is true; You do not know him,
29 Eu o conheço, porque venho dele e ele me enviou.	29 but I know him because I have my being from him and it was he who sent me.
30 Procuraram prendê-lo, mas ninguém lhe deitou as mãos, porque ainda não era chegada a sua hora.	30 They wanted to arrest him then, but because his hour had not yet come no one laid a hand on him.
31 Muitos do povo, porém, creram nele e perguntavam: Quando vier o Cristo, fará mais milagres do que este faz?	31 There were many people in the crowds, however, who believed in him; they were saying, 'When theChrist comes, wil he give more signs than this man has?'
32 Os fariseus ouviram esse murmúrio que circulava entre o povo a respeito de Jesus. Então, de acordo com eles, os príncipes dos sacerdotes enviaram guardas para prendê-lo.	32 Hearing that talk like this about him was spreading among the people, the Pharisees sent the Templeguards to arrest him.
33 Disse Jesus: Ainda por um pouco de tempo estou convosco e então vou para aquele que me enviou.	33 Then Jesus said: For a short time I am with you stil ; then I shal go back to the one who sent me.
34 Buscar-me-eis sem me achar, nem podereis ir para onde estou.	34 You will look for me and wil not find me; where I am you cannot come.
35 Os judeus perguntavam entre si: Para onde irá ele, que o não possamos achar? Porventura irá para o meio dos judeus dispersos entre os gregos, para tornar-se o doutor dos estrangeiros?	35 So the Jews said to one another, 'Where is he intending to go that we shal not be able to find him? Ishe intending to go abroad to the people who are dispersed among the Greeks and to teach the Greeks?
36 Que significam essas palavras que nos disse: Buscar-me-eis sem me achar, e onde estou para lá não podereis ir?	36 'Why do you want to kil me?' What does he mean when he says: "You will look for me and wil not findme; where I am, you cannot come?" '
37 No último dia, que é o principal dia de festa, estava Jesus de pé e clamava: Se alguém tiver sede, venha a mim e beba.	37 On the last day, the great day of the festival, Jesus stood and cried out: 'Let anyone who is thirstycome to me!
38 Quem crê em mim, como diz a Escritura: Do seu interior manarão rios de água viva {Zc 14,8; Is 58,11}.	38 Let anyone who believes in me come and drink! As scripture says, "From his heart shal flow streamsof living water." '
39 Dizia isso, referindo-se ao Espírito que haviam de receber os que cressem nele, pois ainda não fora dado o Espírito, visto que Jesus ainda não tinha sido glorificado.	39 He was speaking of the Spirit which those who believed in him were to receive; for there was no Spiritas yet because Jesus had not yet been glorified.
40 Ouvindo essas palavras, alguns daquela multidão diziam: Este é realmente o profeta.	40 Some of the crowd who had been listening said, 'He is indeed the prophet,'
41 Outros diziam: Este é o Cristo. Mas outros protestavam: É acaso da Galiléia que há de vir o Cristo?	41 and some said, 'He is the Christ,' but others said, 'Would the Christ come from Galilee?
42 Não diz a Escritura: O Cristo há de vir da família de Davi, e da aldeia de Belém, onde vivia Davi?	42 Does not scripture say that the Christ must be descended from David and come from Bethlehem, thevil age where David was?'
43 Houve por isso divisão entre o povo por causa dele.	43 So the people could not agree about him.
44 Alguns deles queriam prendê-lo, mas ninguém lhe lançou as mãos.	44 Some wanted to arrest him, but no one actual y laid a hand on him.
45 Voltaram os guardas para junto dos príncipes dos sacerdotes e fariseus, que lhes perguntaram: Por que não o trouxestes?	45 The guards went back to the chief priests and Pharisees who said to them, 'Why haven't you broughthim?'
46 Os guardas responderam: Jamais homem algum falou como este homem!...	46 The guards replied, 'No one has ever spoken like this man.'
47 Replicaram os fariseus: Porventura também vós fostes seduzidos?	47 'So,' the Pharisees answered, 'you, too, have been led astray?
48 Há, acaso, alguém dentre as autoridades ou fariseus que acreditou nele?	48 Have any of the authorities come to believe in him? Any of the Pharisees?
49 Este poviléu que não conhece a lei é amaldiçoado!...	49 This rabble knows nothing about the Law -- they are damned.'
50 Replicou-lhes Nicodemos, um deles, o mesmo que de noite o fora procurar:	50 One of them, Nicodemus -- the same man who had come to Jesus earlier -- said to them,
51 Condena acaso a nossa lei algum homem, antes de o ouvir e conhecer o que ele faz?	51 'But surely our Law does not al ow us to pass judgement on anyone without first giving him a hearingand discovering what he is doing?'
52 Responderam-lhe: Porventura és também tu galileu? Informa-te bem e verás que da Galiléia não saiu profeta.	52 To this they answered, 'Are you a Galilean too? Go into the matter, and see for yourself: prophets donot arise in Galilee.'
53 E voltaram, cada um para sua casa.	53 They al went home,
