SAGRADA BIBLIANEW JERUSALEM
Jesus entrou em Jericó e ia atravessando a cidade.1 He entered Jericho and was going through the town
Havia aí um homem muito rico chamado Zaqueu, chefe dos recebedores de impostos.2 and suddenly a man whose name was Zacchaeus made his appearance; he was one of the senior taxcol ectors and a wealthy man.
Ele procurava ver quem era Jesus, mas não o conseguia por causa da multidão, porque era de baixa estatura.3 He kept trying to see which Jesus was, but he was too short and could not see him for the crowd;
Ele correu adiande, subiu a um sicômoro para o ver, quando ele passasse por ali.4 so he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore tree to catch a glimpse of Jesus who was to pass that way.
When Jesus reached the spot he looked up and spoke to him, 'Zacchaeus, come down. Hurry,because I am to stay at your house today.'
Ele desceu a toda a pressa e recebeu-o alegremente.6 And he hurried down and welcomed him joyful y.
Vendo isto, todos murmuravam e diziam: Ele vai hospedar-se em casa de um pecador...7 They al complained when they saw what was happening. 'He has gone to stay at a sinner's house,'they said.
But Zacchaeus stood his ground and said to the Lord, 'Look, sir, I am going to give half my property tothe poor, and if I have cheated anybody I wil pay him back four times the amount.'
Disse-lhe Jesus: Hoje entrou a salvação nesta casa, porquanto também este é filho de Abraão.9 And Jesus said to him, 'Today salvation has come to this house, because this man too is a son ofAbraham;
Pois o Filho do Homem veio procurar e salvar o que estava perdido.10 for the Son of man has come to seek out and save what was lost.'
Ouviam-no falar. While the people were listening to this he went on to tel a parable, because he was near Jerusalemand they thought that the kingdom of God was going to show itself then and there.
A man of noble birth went to a distant country to be appointed king and thenreturn.
He summoned ten of his servants and gave them ten pounds, tel ing them, "Trade with these, until Iget back."
But his compatriots detested him and sent a delegation to fol ow him with this message, "We do notwant this man to be our king."
Quando, investido da dignidade real, voltou, mandou chamar os servos a quem confiara o dinheiro, a fim de saber quanto cada um tinha lucrado.15 'Now it happened that on his return, having received his appointment as king, he sent for thoseservants to whom he had given the money, to find out what profit each had made by trading.
Veio o primeiro: Senhor, a tua mina rendeu dez outras minas.16 The first came in, "Sir," he said, "your one pound has brought in ten."
He replied, "Wel done, my good servant! Since you have proved yourself trustworthy in a very smalthing, you shal have the government of ten cities."
Veio o segundo: Senhor, a tua mina rendeu cinco outras minas.18 Then came the second, "Sir," he said, "your one pound has made five."
Disse a este: Sê também tu governador de cinco cidades.19 To this one also he said, "And you shal be in charge of five cities."
Veio também o outro: Senhor, aqui tens a tua mina, que guardei embrulhada num lenço;20 Next came the other, "Sir," he said, "here is your pound. I put it away safely wrapped up in a cloth
I was afraid of you; for you are an exacting man: you gather in what you have not laid outand reap what you have not sown."
Replicou-lhe ele: Servo mau, pelas tuas palavras te julgo. He said to him, "You wicked servant! Out of your own mouth I condemn you. So you knew that I wasan exacting man, gathering in what I have not laid out and reaping what I have not sown?
Na minha volta, eu o teria retirado com juros.23 Then why did you not put my money in the bank? On my return I could have drawn it out withinterest."
And he said to those standing by, "Take the pound from him and give it to the man who has tenpounds."
Replicaram-lhe: Senhor, este já tem dez minas!...25 And they said to him, "But, sir, he has ten pounds . . ."
Eu vos declaro: a todo aquele que tiver, dar-se-lhe-á; mas, ao que não tiver, ser-lhe-á tirado até o que tem.26 "I tel you, to everyone who has wil be given more; but anyone who has not wil be deprived even ofwhat he has.
As for my enemies who did not want me for their king, bring them here and execute them in mypresence." '
When he had said this he went on ahead, going up to Jerusalem.
Now it happened that when he was near Bethphage and Bethany, close by the Mount of Olives as itis cal ed, he sent two of the disciples, saying,
Entrando nela, achareis um jumentinho atado, em que nunca montou pessoa alguma; desprendei-o e trazei-mo.30 'Go to the vil age opposite, and as you enter it you wil find a tethered colt that no one has ever yetridden. Untie it and bring it here.
If anyone asks you, "Why are you untying it?" you are to say this, "The Master needs it." '
The messengers went off and found everything just as he had told them.
As they were untying the colt, its owners said, 'Why are you untying it?'
Eles responderam: O Senhor precisa dele.34 and they answered, 'The Master needs it.'
So they took the colt to Jesus and, throwing their cloaks on its back, they lifted Jesus on to it.
À sua passagem, muitas pessoas estendiam seus mantos no caminho.36 As he moved off, they spread their cloaks in the road,
Quando já se ia aproximando da descida do monte das Oliveiras, toda a multidão dos discípulos, tomada de alegria, começou a louvar a Deus em altas vozes, por todas as maravilhas que tinha visto.37 and now, as he was approaching the downward slope of the Mount of Olives, the whole group ofdisciples joyful y began to praise God at the top of their voices for all the miracles they had seen.
They cried out: Blessed is he who is coming as King in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven andglory in the highest heavens!
Neste momento, alguns fariseus interpelaram a Jesus no meio da multidão: Mestre, repreende os teus discípulos.39 Some Pharisees in the crowd said to him, 'Master, reprove your disciples,'
Ele respondeu: Digo-vos: se estes se calarem, clamarão as pedras!40 but he answered, 'I tell you, if these keep silence, the stones wil cry out.'
As he drew near and came in sight of the city he shed tears over it
Oh! Mas não, isso está oculto aos teus olhos.42 and said, 'If you too had only recognised on this day the way to peace! But in fact it is hidden fromyour eyes!
Virão sobre ti dias em que os teus inimigos te cercarão de trincheiras, te sitiarão e te apertarão de todos os lados;43 Yes, a time is coming when your enemies wil raise fortifications all round you, when they wil encircleyou and hem you in on every side;
destruir-te-ão a ti e a teus filhos que estiverem dentro de ti, e não deixarão em ti pedra sobre pedra, porque não conheceste o tempo em que foste visitada.44 they wil dash you and the children inside your wal s to the ground; they wil leave not one stonestanding on another within you, because you did not recognise the moment of your visitation.'
Em seguida, entrou no templo e começou a expulsar os mercadores.45 Then he went into the Temple and began driving out those who were busy trading, saying to them,
Disse ele: Está escrito: A minha casa é casa de oração! Mas vós a fizestes um covil de ladrões {Is 56,7; Jr 7,11}.46 'According to scripture, my house shal be a house of prayer but you have turned it into a bandits'den.'
Todos os dias ensinava no templo. Os príncipes dos sacerdotes, porém, os escribas e os chefes do povo procuravam tirar-lhe a vida.47 He taught in the Temple every day. The chief priests and the scribes, in company with the leadingcitizens, tried to do away with him,
Mas não sabiam como realizá-lo, porque todo o povo ficava suspenso de admiração, quando o ouvia falar.48 but they could not find a way to carry this out because the whole people hung on his words.
