SAGRADA BIBLIANEW JERUSALEM
Passaram à outra margem do lago, ao território dos gerasenos.1 They reached the territory of the Gerasenes on the other side of the lake,
Assim que saíram da barca, um homem possesso do espírito imundo saiu do cemitério2 and when he disembarked, a man with an unclean spirit at once came out from the tombs towards him.
The man lived in the tombs and no one could secure him any more, even with a chain,
pois tinha sido ligado muitas vezes com grilhões e cadeias, mas os despedaçara e ninguém o podia subjugar.4 because he had often been secured with fetters and chains but had snapped the chains and broken thefetters, and no one had the strength to control him.
All night and al day, among the tombs and in the mountains, he would howl and gash himself withstones.
Vendo Jesus de longe, correu e prostrou-se diante dele, gritando em alta voz:6 Catching sight of Jesus from a distance, he ran up and fel at his feet
Que queres de mim, Jesus, Filho do Deus Altíssimo?Conjuro-te por Deus, que não me atormentes.7 and shouted at the top of his voice, 'What do you want with me, Jesus, son of the Most High God? InGod's name do not torture me!'
É que Jesus lhe dizia: Espírito imundo, sai deste homem!8 For Jesus had been saying to him, 'Come out of the man, unclean spirit.'
Perguntou-lhe Jesus: Qual é o teu nome? Respondeu-lhe: Legião é o meu nome, porque somos muitos.9 Then he asked, 'What is your name?' He answered, 'My name is Legion, for there are many of us.'
And he begged him earnestly not to send them out of the district.
Now on the mountainside there was a great herd of pigs feeding,
E os espíritos suplicavam-lhe: Manda-nos para os porcos, para entrarmos neles.12 and the unclean spirits begged him, 'Send us to the pigs, let us go into them.'
Jesus lhos permitiu. Então os espíritos imundos, tendo saído, entraram nos porcos; e a manada, de uns dois mil, precipitou-se no mar, afogando-se.13 So he gave them leave. With that, the unclean spirits came out and went into the pigs, and the herd ofabout two thousand pigs charged down the cliff into the lake, and there they were drowned.
Então saíram a ver o que tinha acontecido.14 The men looking after them ran off and told their story in the city and in the country round about; andthe people came to see what had real y happened.
E o pânico apoderou-se deles.15 They came to Jesus and saw the demoniac sitting there -- the man who had had the legion in him --properly dressed and in his ful senses, and they were afraid.
And those who had witnessed it reported what had happened to the demoniac and what had becomeof the pigs.
Começaram então a rogar-lhe que se retirasse da sua região.17 Then they began to implore Jesus to leave their neighbourhood.
Quando ele subia para a barca, veio o que tinha sido possesso e pediu-lhe permissão de acompanhá-lo.18 As he was getting into the boat, the man who had been possessed begged to be al owed to stay withhim.
Jesus não o admitiu, mas disse-lhe: Vai para casa, para junto dos teus e anuncia-lhes tudo o que o Senhor fez por ti, e como se compadeceu de ti.19 Jesus would not let him but said to him, 'Go home to your people and tel them al that the Lord in hismercy has done for you.'
E todos se admiravam.20 So the man went off and proceeded to proclaim in the Decapolis al that Jesus had done for him. Andeveryone was amazed.
Ele se achava à beira do mar, quando21 When Jesus had crossed again in the boat to the other side, a large crowd gathered round him and hestayed by the lake.
Then the president of the synagogue came up, named Jairus, and seeing him, fel at his feet
Vem, impõe-lhe as mãos para que se salve e viva.23 and begged him earnestly, saying, 'My little daughter is desperately sick. Do come and lay your handson her that she may be saved and may live.'
Jesus foi com ele e grande multidão o seguia, comprimindo-o.24 Jesus went with him and a large crowd followed him; they were pressing al round him.
Ora, havia ali uma mulher que já por doze anos padecia de um fluxo de sangue.25 Now there was a woman who had suffered from a haemorrhage for twelve years;
Sofrera muito nas mãos de vários médicos, gastando tudo o que possuía, sem achar nenhum alívio; pelo contrário, piorava cada vez mais.26 after long and painful treatment under various doctors, she had spent al she had without being anythe better for it; in fact, she was getting worse.
She had heard about Jesus, and she came up through the crowd and touched his cloak from behind, thinking,
If I can just touch his clothes, I shal be saved.'
Ora, no mesmo instante se lhe estancou a fonte de sangue, e ela teve a sensação de estar curada.29 And at once the source of the bleeding dried up, and she felt in herself that she was cured of hercomplaint.
And at once aware of the power that had gone out from him, Jesus turned round in the crowd andsaid, 'Who touched my clothes?'
His disciples said to him, 'You see how the crowd is pressing round you; how can you ask, "Whotouched me?" '
E ele olhava em derredor para ver quem o fizera.32 But he continued to look al round to see who had done it.
Then the woman came forward, frightened and trembling because she knew what had happened toher, and she fel at his feet and told him the whole truth.
Mas ele lhe disse: Filha, a tua fé te salvou. Vai em paz e sê curada do teu mal.34 'My daughter,' he said, 'your faith has restored you to health; go in peace and be free of yourcomplaint.'
Enquanto ainda falava, chegou alguém da casa do chefe da sinagoga, anunciando: Tua filha morreu. Para que ainda incomodas o Mestre?35 While he was stil speaking some people arrived from the house of the president of the synagogue tosay, 'Your daughter is dead; why put the Master to any further trouble?'
Ouvindo Jesus a notícia que era transmitida, dirigiu-se ao chefe da sinagoga: Não temas; crê somente.36 But Jesus overheard what they said and he said to the president of the synagogue, 'Do not be afraid;only have faith.'
E não permitiu que ninguém o acompanhasse, senão Pedro, Tiago e João, irmão de Tiago.37 And he allowed no one to go with him except Peter and James and John the brother of James.
Ao chegar à casa do chefe da sinagoga, viu o alvoroço e os que estavam chorando e fazendo grandes lamentações.38 So they came to the house of the president of the synagogue, and Jesus noticed al the commotion, with people weeping and wailing unrestrainedly.
Ela está dormindo.39 He went in and said to them, 'Why all this commotion and crying? The child is not dead, but asleep.'
Mas riam-se dele. Contudo, tendo mandado sair todos, tomou o pai e a mãe da menina e os que levava consigo, e entrou onde a menina estava deitada.40 But they ridiculed him. So he turned them al out and, taking with him the child's father and mother andhis own companions, he went into the place where the child lay.
Segurou a mão da menina e disse-lhe: Talita cumi, que quer dizer: Menina, ordeno-te, levanta-te!41 And taking the child by the hand he said to her, 'Talitha kum!' which means, 'Little girl, I tel you to getup.'
E imediatamente a menina se levantou e se pôs a caminhar {pois contava doze anos}. Eles ficaram assombrados.42 The little girl got up at once and began to walk about, for she was twelve years old. At once they wereovercome with astonishment,
Jesus de Nazaré43 and he gave them strict orders not to let anyone know about it, and told them to give her something toeat.
