1 - Chi ama il suo figliuolo, gli è sempre addosso con la sferza, perchè possa rallegrarsi della sua riuscita, e quegli non abbia a picchiare alle porte de' vicini. | 1 He that loveth his son, frequently chastiseth him, that he may rejoice in his latter end, and not grope after the doors of his neighbours. |
2 Chi castiga il suo figliuolo, avrà a lodarsi di lui, e tra i conoscenti se ne glorierà. | 2 He that instructeth his son shall be praised in him, and shall glory in him in the midst of them of his household. |
3 Chi istruisce suo figlio, fa geloso il nemico, e davanti agli amici se ne glorierà. | 3 He that teacheth his son, maketh his enemy jealous, and in the midst of his friends he shall glory in him. |
4 Muore il padre di lui e quasi non muore; perchè dopo di sè lascia uno che gli rassomiglia. | 4 His father is dead, and he is as if he were not dead: for he hath left one behind him that is like himself. |
5 Durante la sua vita lo vede e n'ha consolazione, e in morte non si rattrista, nè ha da arrossire in faccia a' nemici. | 5 While he lived he saw and rejoiced in him: and when he died he was not sorrowful, neither was he confounded before his enemies. |
6 Lascia invero un vendicatore della sua casa contro i nemici, e uno che mostrerà riconoscenza agli amici. | 6 For he left behind him a defender of his house against his enemies, and one that will requite kindness to his friends. |
7 Chi vezzeggia suo figlio, fascerà le sue piaghe, e a ogni grido [di lui] si turberan le sue viscere. | 7 For the souls of his sons he shall bind up his wounds, and at every cry his bowels shall be troubled. |

12 Piega la sua cervice nella gioventù, e rompigli le costole mentr'è fanciullo; perchè non divenga caparbio e ti si ribelli, e tu n'abbia strazio di cuore. | 12 Give him not liberty in his youth, and wink not at his devices. |
13 Educa tuo figlio e affaticati intorno a lui, per non incappare nella sua turpitudine. | 13 Bow down his neck while he is young, and beat his sides while he is a child, lest he grow stubborn, and regard thee not, and so be a sorrow of heart to thee. |
14 Meglio un povero sano e vigoroso di forze, che un ricco cagionevole e flagellato dal male. | 14 Instruct thy son, and labour about him, lest his lewd behaviour be an offence to thee. |
15 La salute dell'anima, nella santità della giustizia, vai più d'ogni oro e argento, e il corpo robusto più d'una ricchezza immensa. | 15 Better is a poor man who is sound, and strong of constitution, than a rich man who is weak and afflicted with evils. |
16 Non c'è ricchezza che superi quella della salute del corpo, e non c'è piacere superiore alla gioia del cuore. | 16 Health of the soul in holiness of justice, is better then all gold and silver: and a sound body, than immense revenues. |
17 Meglio la morte che una vita amara, e il riposo eterno che una malattia ostinata. | 17 There is no riches above the riches of the health of the body: and there is no pleasure above the joy of the heart. |
18 Le buone cose profuse a una bocca chiusa, son come le offerte di vivande poste sur una tomba. | 18 Better is death than a bitter life: and everlasting rest, than continual sickness. |
19 Che giova l'oblazione a un idolo? esso invero non mangerà e non sentirà l'odore! | 19 Good things that are hidden in a mouth that is shut, are as masses of meat set about a grave. |
20 Cosi colui ch'è perseguitato dal Signore, e porta la pena della sua iniquità. | 20 What good shall an offering do to an idol? for it can neither eat, nor smell: |
21 Vede con gli occhi e geme, come l'eunuco che abbraccia una vergine e sospirai | 21 So is he that is persecuted by the Lord, bearing the reward of his iniquity: |
22 Non abbandonar l'anima tua alla tristezza, e non t'angustiare co' tuoi pensieri. | 22 He seeth with his eyes, and groaneth, as an eunuch embracing a virgin, and sighing. |
23 L'allegria del cuore è la vita dell'uomo, e un tesoro inesausto di santità, e l'esultanza dell'uomo è longevità. | 23 Give not up thy soul to sadness, and afflict not thyself in thy own counsel. |
24 Abbi pietà dell'anima tua, rendendoti accetto a Dio, e sii continente: raccogli il tuo cuore nella santità di lui, e caccia lungi da te la tristezza. | 24 The joyfulness of the heart, is the life of a man, and a never failing treasure of holiness: and the joy of a man is length of life. |
25 Molti invero ha ucciso la tristezza, e non c'è utilità in essa. | 25 Have pity on thy own soul, pleasing God, and contain thyself: gather up thy heart in his holiness: and drive away sadness far from thee. |
26 invidia e l'ira abbreviano i giorni, e vecchiaia anzi tempo arrecan le cure. | 26 For sadness hath killed many, and there is no profit in it. |
27 Un cuor liberale e contento bada alla tavola: i suoi pasti infatti son preparati con cura. | 27 Envy and anger shorten a man's days, and pensiveness will bring old age before the time. |
