And the entire multitude of them, rising up, led him to Pilate.1 Y levantándose todos ellos, le llevaron ante Pilato.
Then they began to accuse him, saying, “We found this one subverting our nation, and prohibiting giving tribute to Caesar, and saying that he is Christ the king.”2 Comenzaron a acusarle diciendo: «Hemos encontrado a éste alborotando a nuestro pueblo, prohibiendo pagar tributos al César y diciendo que él es Cristo Rey».
And Pilate questioned him, saying: “You are the king of the Jews?” But in response, he said: “You are saying it.”3 Pilato le preguntó: «¿Eres tú el Rey de los judíos?» El le respondió: «Sí, tú lo dices».
Then Pilate said to the leaders of the priests and to the crowds, “I find no case against this man.”4 Pilato dijo a los sumos sacerdotes y a la gente: «Ningún delito encuentro en este hombre».
But they continued more intensely, saying: “He has stirred up the people, teaching throughout all of Judea, beginning from Galilee, even to this place.”5 Pero ellos insistían diciendo: «Solivianta al pueblo, enseñando por toda Judea, desde Galilea, donde comenzó, hasta aquí».
But Pilate, upon hearing Galilee, asked if the man were of Galilee.6 Al oír esto, Pilato preguntó si aquel hombre era galileo.
And when he realized that he was under Herod’s jurisdiction, he sent him away to Herod, who was himself also at Jerusalem in those days.7 Y, al saber que era de la jurisdicción de Herodes, le remitió a Herodes, que por aquellos días estaba también en Jerusalén.
Then Herod, upon seeing Jesus, was very glad. For he had been wanting to see him for a long time, because he had heard so many things about him, and he was hoping to see some kind of sign wrought by him.8 Cuando Herodes vio a Jesús se alegró mucho, pues hacía largo tiempo que deseaba verle, por las cosas que oía de él, y esperaba presenciar alguna señal que él hiciera.
Then he questioned him with many words. But he gave him no response at all.9 Le preguntó con mucha palabrería, pero él no respondió nada.
And the leaders of the priests, and the scribes, stood firm in persistently accusing him.10 Estaban allí los sumos sacerdotes y los escribas acusándole con insistencia.
Then Herod, with his soldiers, scorned him. And he ridiculed him, clothing him in a white garment. And he sent him back to Pilate.11 Pero Herodes, con su guardia, después de despreciarle y burlarse de él, le puso un espléndido vestido y le remitió a Pilato.
And Herod and Pilate became friends on that day. For previously they were enemies to one another.12 Aquel día Herodes y Pilato se hicieron amigos, pues antes estaban enemistados.
And Pilate, calling together the leaders of the priests, and the magistrates, and the people,13 Pilato convocó a los sumos sacerdotes, a los magistrados y al pueblo
said to them: “You have brought before me this man, as one who disturbs the people. And behold, having questioned him before you, I find no case against this man, in those things about which you accuse him.14 y les dijo: «Me habéis traído a este hombre como alborotador del pueblo, pero yo le he interrogado delante de vosotros y no he hallado en este hombre ninguno de los delitos de que le acusáis.
And neither did Herod. For I sent you all to him, and behold, nothing deserving of death was recorded about him.15 Ni tampoco Herodes, porque nos lo ha remitido. Nada ha hecho, pues, que merezca la muerte.
Therefore, I will chastise him and release him.”16 Así que le castigaré y le soltaré».
Now he was required to release one person for them on the feast day.
But the entire crowd exclaimed together, saying: “Take this one, and release to us Barabbas!”18 Toda la muchedumbre se puso a gritar a una: «¡Fuera ése, suéltanos a Barrabás!»
Now he had been cast into prison because of a certain sedition that occurred in the city and for murder.19 Este había sido encarcelado por un motín que hubo en la ciudad y por asesinato.
Then Pilate spoke to them again, wanting to release Jesus.20 Pilato les habló de nuevo, intentando librar a Jesús,
But they shouted in response, saying: “Crucify him! Crucify him!”21 pero ellos seguían gritando: «¡Crucifícale, crucifícale!»
Then he said to them a third time: “Why? What evil has he done? I find no case against him for death. Therefore, I will chastise him and release him.”22 Por tercera vez les dijo: «Pero ¿qué mal ha hecho éste? No encuentro en él ningún delito que merezca la muerte; así que le castigaré y le soltaré».
But they persisted, with loud voices, in demanding that he be crucified. And their voices increased in intensity.23 Pero ellos insistían pidiendo a grandes voces que fuera crucificado y sus gritos eran cada vez más fuertes.
And so Pilate issued a judgment granting their petition.24 Pilato sentenció que se cumpliera su demanda.
Then he released for them the one who had been cast into prison for murder and sedition, whom they were requesting. Yet truly, Jesus he handed over to their will.25 Soltó, pues, al que habían pedido, el que estaba en la cárcel por motín y asesinato, y a Jesús se lo entregó a su voluntad.
And as they were leading him away, they apprehended a certain one, Simon of Cyrene, as he was returning from the countryside. And they imposed the cross on him to carry after Jesus.26 Cuando le llevaban, echaron mano de un cierto Simón de Cirene, que venía del campo, y le cargaron la cruz para que la llevará detrás de Jesús.
Then a great crowd of people followed him, with women who were mourning and lamenting him.27 Le seguía una gran multitud del pueblo y mujeres que se dolían y se lamentaban por él.
But Jesus, turning to them, said: “Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep over me. Instead, weep over yourselves and over your children.28 Jesús, volviéndose a ellas, dijo: «Hijas de Jerusalén, no lloréis por mí; llorad más bien por vosotras y por vuestros hijos.
For behold, the days will arrive in which they will say, ‘Blessed are the barren, and the wombs that have not borne, and the breasts that have not nursed.’29 Porque llegarán días en que se dirá: ¡Dichosas las estériles, las entrañas que no engendraron y los pechos que no criaron!
Then they will begin to say to the mountains, ‘Fall over us,’ and to the hills, ‘Cover us.’30 Entonces se pondrán a decir a los montes: ¡Caed sobre nosotros! Y a las colinas: ¡Cubridnos!
For if they do these things with green wood, what will be done with the dry?”31 Porque si en el leño verde hacen esto, en el seco ¿qué se hará?»
Now they also led out two other criminals with him, in order to execute them.32 Llevaban además otros dos malhechores para ejecutarlos con él.
And when they arrived at the place that is called Calvary, they crucified him there, with the robbers, one to the right and the other to the left.33 Llegados al lugar llamado Calvario, le crucificaron allí a él y a los malhechores, uno a la derecha y otro a la izquierda.
Then Jesus said, “Father, forgive them. For they know not what they do.” And truly, dividing his garments, they cast lots.34 Jesús decía: «Padre, perdónales, porque no saben lo que hacen». Se repartieron sus vestidos, echando a suertes.
And people were standing near, watching. And the leaders among them derided him, saying: “He saved others. Let him save himself, if this one is the Christ, the elect of God.”35 Estaba el pueblo mirando; los magistrados hacían muecas diciendo: «A otros salvó; que se salve a sí mismo si él es el Cristo de Dios, el Elegido».
And the soldiers also ridiculed him, approaching him and offering him vinegar,36 También los soldados se burlaban de él y, acercándose, le ofrecían vinagre
and saying, “If you are the king of the Jews, save yourself.”37 y le decían: «Si tú eres el Rey de los judíos, ¡sálvate!»
Now there was also an inscription written over him in letters of Greek, and Latin, and Hebrew: THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS.38 Había encima de él una inscripción: «Este es el Rey de los judíos».
And one of those robbers who were hanging blasphemed him, saying, “If you are the Christ, save yourself and us.”39 Uno de los malhechores colgados le insultaba: «¿No eres tú el Cristo? Pues ¡sálvate a ti y a nosotros!»
But the other responded by rebuking him, saying: “Do you have no fear of God, since you are under the same condemnation?40 Pero el otro le respondió diciendo: «¿Es que no temes a Dios, tú que sufres la misma condena?
And indeed, it is just for us. For we are receiving what our deeds deserve. But truly, this one has done nothing wrong.”41 Y nosotros con razón, porque nos lo hemos merecido con nuestros hechos; en cambio, éste nada malo ha hecho».
And he said to Jesus, “Lord, remember me when you come into your kingdom.”42 Y decía: «Jesús, acuérdate de mí cuando vengas con tu Reino».
And Jesus said to him, “Amen I say to you, this day you shall be with me in Paradise.”43 Jesús le dijo: «Yo te aseguro: hoy estarás conmigo en el Paraíso».
Now it was nearly the sixth hour, and a darkness occurred over the entire earth, until the ninth hour.44 Era ya cerca de la hora sexta cuando, al eclipsarse el sol, hubo oscuridad sobre toda la tierra hasta la hora nona.
And the sun was obscured. And the veil of the temple was torn down the middle.45 El velo del Santuario se rasgó por medio
And Jesus, crying out with a loud voice, said: “Father, into your hands I commend my spirit.” And upon saying this, he expired.46 y Jesús, dando un fuerte grito, dijo: «Padre, en tus manos pongo mi espíritu» y, dicho esto, expiró.
Now, the centurion, seeing what had happened, glorified God, saying, “Truly, this man was the Just One.”47 Al ver el centurión lo sucedido, glorificaba a Dios diciendo: «Ciertamente este hombre era justo».
And the entire crowd of those who came together to see this spectacle also saw what had happened, and they returned, striking their breasts.48 Y todas las gentes que habían acudido a aquel espectáculo, al ver lo que pasaba, se volvieron golpeándose el pecho.
Now all those who knew him, and the women who had followed him from Galilee, were standing at a distance, watching these things.49 Estaban a distancia, viendo estas cosas, todos sus conocidos y las mujeres que le habían seguido desde Galilea.
And behold, there was a man named Joseph, who was a councilman, a good and just man,50 Había un hombre llamado José, miembro del Consejo, hombre bueno y justo,
(for he had not consented to their decision or their actions). He was from Arimathea, a city of Judea. And he was himself also anticipating the kingdom of God.51 que no había asentido al consejo y proceder de los demás. Era de Arimatea, ciudad de Judea, y esperaba el Reino de Dios.
This man approached Pilate and petitioned for the body of Jesus.52 Se presentó a Pilato y le pidió el cuerpo de Jesús
And taking him down, he wrapped him in a fine linen cloth, and he placed him in a tomb hewn from rock, in which no one had ever been placed.53 y, después de descolgarle, le envolvió en una sábana y le puso en un sepulcro excavado en la roca en el que nadie había sido puesto todavía.
And it was the day of Preparation, and the Sabbath was drawing near.54 Era el día de la Preparación, y apuntaba el sábado.
Now the women who had come with him from Galilee, by following, saw the tomb and the manner in which his body was placed.55 Las mujeres que habían venido con él desde Galilea, fueron detrás y vieron el sepulcro y cómo era colocado su cuerpo,
And upon returning, they prepared aromatic spices and ointments. But on the Sabbath, indeed, they rested, according to the commandment.56 Y regresando, prepararon aromas y mirra. Y el sábado descansaron según el precepto.
