Proverbs 22

1 A good name is better than many riches. And good esteem is above silver and gold.	1 Többet ér a jó név nagy gazdagságnál, s a kedvesség ezüstnél és aranynál.
2 The rich and poor have met one another. The Lord is the maker of them both.	2 Van egymás mellett gazdag is, szegény is: mindegyiket az Úr alkotta.
3 The clever saw evil and hid himself. The innocent continued on and was afflicted with damage.	3 Az élelmes meglátja a bajt és elrejtőzik, a korlátolt pedig tovább megy és kárt vall.
4 The end of moderation is the fear of the Lord, riches and glory and life.	4 A szerénység jutalma az Úr félelme, gazdagság, hírnév és élet.
5 Weapons and swords are on the way of the perverse. But he who guards his own soul withdraws far from them.	5 A gonosz útján fegyver és kard van, aki vigyáz lelkére, távol marad tőlük.
6 The proverb is: A youth is close to his way; even when he is old, he will not withdraw from it.	6 Az ifjú a maga életútját követi, s akkor sem hagyja el, amikor megvénül.
7 The rich rule over the poor. And the borrower is servant to the lender.	7 A gazdag uralkodik a szegényen, s aki kölcsönt vesz fel, szolgája a hitelezőnek.
8 Whoever sows iniquity will reap evils, and by the rod of his own wrath he will be consumed.	8 Aki igazságtalanságot vet, bajt arat, és dölyfének vesszője megsemmisül.
9 Whoever is inclined to mercy shall be blessed, for from his bread he has given to the poor. Whoever gives gifts will acquire victory and honor. But he carries away the soul of the receiver.	9 Az irgalmas lelkű áldásban részesül, mert adott kenyeréből a szegénynek. Siker és tisztelet jut annak, aki adakozik, és megnyeri azok lelkét, akik adományát veszik.
10 Cast out the one who ridicules, and conflict will go out with him, and accusations and insults will cease.	10 Űzd el az arcátlant, és távozik vele a viszály, megszűnik a perpatvar s a szidalom.
11 Whoever loves cleanness of heart, because of the grace of his lips, will have the king as his friend.	11 Azt kedveli az Úr, aki tisztaszívű, aki szépen tud beszélni, annak a király a barátja.
12 The eyes of the Lord watch over knowledge. And the words of the iniquitous are supplanted.	12 Az Úr szemei megőrzik a tudást, s az elvetemült igéi összeomlanak.
13 The lazy one says: “There is a lion outside. I might be slain in the midst of the streets.”	13 Így szól a lusta: »Oroszlán van odakint! Még megölnek az utca közepén!«
14 The mouth of a foreign woman is a deep pit; the Lord was angry with him who will fall into it.	14 Az idegen asszony szája mély verem, akire az Úr haragszik, beleesik.
15 Foolishness has been bound to the heart of a child, and a rod of discipline shall cause it to flee.	15 Dőreség tapad az ifjú szívéhez, a fenyítő pálca azonban leszedi róla.
16 Whoever slanders the poor, so as to augment his own riches, will give it away to one who is richer, and will be in need.	16 Aki szegényt sanyargat, hogy gyarapítsa vagyonát, ad majd a magánál gazdagabbnak, és szükségbe jut.
17 Incline your ear, and listen to the words of the wise. Then apply your heart to my doctrine.	17 Hajtsd ide füledet, és hallgasd a bölcsek mondásait, vedd szívedre tanításomat,
18 It shall be beautiful to you, if you preserve it in your inner self, and it shall overflow from your lips,	18 mert gyönyörűségedre lesz, ha megőrzöd bensődben, és kiárad majd ajkadra!
19 so that your confidence may be in the Lord. Therefore, I also have revealed it to you this day.	19 Hogy az Úrba helyezd bizalmadat, a mai napon veled is közlöm.
20 Behold, I have written it for you in three ways, and with meditations and knowledge,	20 Harminc mondást írtam le számodra, megfontolással és tudománnyal,
21 so that I might reveal to you, firmly and with words of truth, in order to respond about these things to those who sent you.	21 hogy tudtodra adjam az igazságot s az igaz igéket, hogy megfelelhess velük azoknak, akik téged küldtek.
22 Do not act with violence toward the pauper because he is poor. And do not weary the needy at the gate.	22 Meg ne rövidítsd a szegényt, azért mert szegény, s el ne taposd a szűkölködőt a kapuban,
23 For the Lord will judge his case, and he will pierce those who have pierced his soul.	23 mert ügyét az Úr vállalja és elveszíti azokat, akik vesztére törnek.
24 Do not be willing to be a friend to an angry man, and do not walk with a furious man,	24 Ne barátkozz olyannal, aki indulatos, és ne járj haragos férfival,
25 lest perhaps you learn his ways, and take up a stumbling block to your soul.	25 hogy el ne tanuld útjait, és kelepcét ne állíts lelkednek.
26 Do not be willing to be with those who certify with their hands, and who offer themselves as a guarantee against debts.	26 Ne légy azok között, akik kezüket adják, hogy tartozásért jótálljanak,
27 For if you do not have the means to restore, what reason should there be for him to take the covering from your bed?	27 ha majd nem lesz miből fizetned, miért engednéd, hogy elvegyék a takarót ágyadról?
28 Do not cross beyond the ancient limits that your fathers have set.	28 El ne mozdítsd a régi határt, amelyet őseid megvontak!
29 Have you seen a man swift in his work? He shall stand in the sight of kings, and not before those who are disreputable.	29 Láttál-e férfit, aki ügyes a dolgában? Királyok előtt legyen a helye, és ne az alacsony sorban levők előtt!
