CATHOLIC PUBLIC DOMAINDOUAI-RHEIMS
Better is the poor who walks in his simplicity, than the rich who twists his lips and is unwise.1 Better is the poor man, that walketh in his simplicity, than a rich man that is perverse in his lips, and unwise.
Where there is no knowledge of the soul, there is no good. And whoever hurries with his feet will stumble.2 Where there is no knowledge of the soul, there is no good: and he that is hasty with his feet shall stumble.
The foolishness of a man undermines his steps. And then he seethes in his soul against God.3 The folly of a man supplanteth his seeps: and he fretteth in his mind against God.
Riches adds many friends. But from the pauper, even those whom he had become separated.4 Riches make many friends: but from the poor man, even they whom he had, depart.
A false witness shall not go unpunished. And whoever speaks lies will not escape.5 A false witness shall not be unpunished: and he that speaketh lies shall not escape.
Many honor the character of one who is powerful, and there are friends for a giver of gifts.6 Many honour the person of him that is mighty, and are friends of him that giveth gifts.
The brothers of the poor man hate him. Moreover, even his friends have withdrawn far from him. Whoever pursues only words shall have nothing.7 The brethren of the poor man hate him: moreover also his friends have departed far from him. He that followeth after words only, shall have nothing.
But whoever possesses reason loves his own soul. And one who guards prudence shall discover good things.8 But he that possesseth a mind, loveth his own soul, and he that keepeth prudence shall find good things.
A false witness shall not go unpunished. And whoever speaks lies will perish.9 A false witness shall not be unpunished: and he that speaketh lies, shall perish.
Fine things are not fitting for the foolish, nor is it fitting for a servant to rule over princes.10 Delicacies are not seemly for a fool: nor for a servant to have rule over princes.
The doctrine of a man is known through patience. And his glory is to pass beyond iniquities.11 The learning of a man is known by patience and his glory is to pass over wrongs.
Like the roaring of a lion, so also is the wrath of a king. And his cheerfulness is like the dew upon the grass.12 As the roaring of a lion, so also is the anger of a king: and his cheerfulness as the dew upon the grass.
A foolish son is the grief of his father. And an argumentative wife is like a roof that is continually leaking.13 A foolish son is the grief of his father: and a wrangling wife is like a roof continually dropping through.
A house and its riches are given by parents. But a prudent wife is particularly from the Lord.14 House and riches are given by parents: but a prudent wife is properly from the Lord.
Laziness sends one into a deep sleep, and a dissolute soul will go hungry.15 Slothfulness casteth into a deep sleep, and an idle soul shall suffer hunger.
Whoever guards a commandment guards his own soul. But whoever neglects his own way will die.16 He that keepeth the commandment, keepeth his own soul: but he that neglecteth his own way, shall die.
Whoever is merciful to the poor lends to the Lord. And he will repay him for his efforts.17 He that hath mercy on the poor, lendeth to the Lord: and he will repay him.
Teach your son; do not despair. But do not set your soul toward putting him to death.18 Chastise thy son, despair not: but to the killing of him set not thy soul.
Whoever is impatient will sustain damage. And when it has been taken away, he will set up another.19 He that is impatient, shall suffer damage: and when he shall take away he shall add another thing.
Listen to counsel and take up discipline, so that you may be wise in your latter days.20 Hear counsel, and receive instruction, that thou mayst be wise in thy latter end.
There are many intentions in the heart of a man. But the will of the Lord shall stand firm.21 There are many thoughts in the heart of a man: but the will of the Lord shall stand firm.
An indigent man is merciful. And a pauper is better than a deceitful man.22 A needy man is merciful: and better is the poor than the lying man.
The fear of the Lord is unto life. And he shall linger in plentitude, without being visited by disaster.23 The fear of the Lord is unto life: and he shall abide in fulness without being visited with evil.
The lazy conceals his hand under his arm, and he will not so much as bring it to his mouth.24 The slothful hideth his hand under his armpit, and will not so much as bring it to his mouth.
When the pestilent are scourged, the foolish will become wiser. But if you chastise the wise, he will understand discipline.25 The wicked man being; scourged, the fool shall be wiser: but if thou rebuke a wise man he will understand discipline.
Whoever afflicts his father and flees from his mother is disreputable and unhappy.26 He that afflicteth his father, and chaseth away his mother, is infamous and unhappy.
Son, do not cease listening to doctrine, and do not be ignorant of the sermons of knowledge.27 Cease not, O my son, to hear instruction, and be not ignorant of the words of knowledge.
An unjust witness ridicules judgment. And the mouth of the impious devours iniquity.28 An unjust witness scorneth judgment: and the mouth of the wicked devoureth iniquity.
Judgments are prepared for those who ridicule. And striking hammers are prepared for the bodies of the foolish.29 Judgments are prepared for scorners: and striking hammers for the bodies of fools.
