Naquele tempo, o tetrarca Herodes ouviu falar da fama de Jesus,1 At that time Herod the tetrarch heard about the reputation of Jesus
e disse aos seus cortesãos: "Este é João Baptista, que ressuscitou dos mortos, e eis porque tantos milagres se operam por meio dele."2 and said to his court, 'This is John the Baptist himself; he has risen from the dead, and that is why miraculous powers are at work in him.'
Now it was Herod who had arrested John, chained him up and put him in prison because of Herodias, his brother Philip's wife.
Porque João dizia-lhe: "Não te é licito tê-la por mulher."4 For John had told him, 'It is against the Law for you to have her.'
He had wanted to kil him but was afraid of the people, who regarded John as a prophet.
Mas, no dia natalício de Herodes, a filha de Herodíades bailou no meio dos convivas, e agradou a Herodes.6 Then, during the celebrations for Herod's birthday, the daughter of Herodias danced before thecompany and so delighted Herod
Por isso ele prometeu-lhe com juramento dar-lhe tudo o que lhe pedisse.7 that he promised on oath to give her anything she asked.
E ela, instigada por sua mãe: "Dá-me, disse, aqui num prato a cabeça de João Baptista."8 Prompted by her mother she said, 'Give me John the Baptist's head, here, on a dish.'
The king was distressed but, thinking of the oaths he had sworn and of his guests, he ordered it to begiven her,
E mandou degolar João no cárcere.10 and sent and had John beheaded in the prison.
Foi trazida a sua cabeça num prato, e dada à moça, e ela levou-a a sua mãe.11 The head was brought in on a dish and given to the girl, who took it to her mother.
Chegando os seus discípulos, levaram o corpo, e sepultaram-no; depois foram dar a notícia, a Jesus.12 John's disciples came and took the body and buried it; then they went off to tell Jesus.
When Jesus received this news he withdrew by boat to a lonely place where they could be bythemselves. But the crowds heard of this and, leaving the towns, went after him on foot.
So as he stepped ashore he saw a large crowd; and he took pity on them and healed their sick.
When evening came, the disciples went to him and said, 'This is a lonely place, and time has slippedby; so send the people away, and they can go to the vil ages to buy themselves some food.'
Mas Jesus disse-lhes: "Não têm necessidade de ir; dai-lhes vós de comer."16 Jesus replied, 'There is no need for them to go: give them something to eat yourselves.'
Responderam-lhe: "Não temos aqui senão cinco pães e dois peixes.17 But they answered, 'All we have with us is five loaves and two fish.'
Ele disse-lhes: "Trazei-mos cá ."18 So he said, 'Bring them here to me.'
He gave orders that the people were to sit down on the grass; then he took the five loaves and thetwo fish, raised his eyes to heaven and said the blessing. And breaking the loaves he handed them to hisdisciples, who gave them to the crowds.
Comeram todos, e saciaram-se; e levantaram doze cestos cheios dos bocados que sobejaram.20 They al ate as much as they wanted, and they col ected the scraps left over, twelve baskets full.
Now about five thousand men had eaten, to say nothing of women and children.
Imediatamente Jesus obrigou os seus discípulos a subir para a barca, e a passarem antes dele à outra margem do lago, enquanto despedia as turbas.22 And at once he made the disciples get into the boat and go on ahead to the other side while he sentthe crowds away.
Quando chegou a noite, achava-se ali só.23 After sending the crowds away he went up into the hil s by himself to pray. When evening came, hewas there alone,
Entretanto a barca no meio do mar era batida pelas ondas, porque o vento era contrário.24 while the boat, by now some furlongs from land, was hard pressed by rough waves, for there was ahead-wind.
In the fourth watch of the night he came towards them, walking on the sea,
E, com medo, começaram a gritar.26 and when the disciples saw him walking on the sea they were terrified. 'It is a ghost,' they said, andcried out in fear.
Mas Jesus falou-lhes imediatamente, dizendo: "Tende confiança; sou eu, não temais."27 But at once Jesus cal ed out to them, saying, 'Courage! It's me! Don't be afraid.'
It was Peter who answered. 'Lord,' he said, 'if it is you, tel me to come to you across the water.'
Ele disse: "Vem" Descendo Pedro da barca, caminhava sobre a água para ir a Jesus.29 Jesus said, 'Come.' Then Peter got out of the boat and started walking towards Jesus across thewater,
Vendo, porém, que o vento era forte, temeu, e, começando a submergir-se, gritou, dizendo: "Senhor salva-me!"30 but then noticing the wind, he took fright and began to sink. 'Lord,' he cried, 'save me!'
Imediatamente Jesus, estendendo a mão, o tomou e lhe disse; "Homem de pouca fé, porque duvidaste?"31 Jesus put out his hand at once and held him. 'You have so little faith,' he said, 'why did you doubt?'
Depois que subiram para a barca, o vento cessou.32 And as they got into the boat the wind dropped.
Os que estavam na barca prostraram-se diante dele, dizendo: "Verdadeiramente tu és o Filho de Deus."33 The men in the boat bowed down before him and said, 'Truly, you are the Son of God.'
Tendo atravessado o lago, foram para a terra de Genesar.34 Having made the crossing, they came to land at Gennesaret.
Tendo-o reconhecido o povo daquele lugar, mandaram prevenir toda aquela região, e lhe apresentaram todos os doentes.35 When the local people recognised him they spread the news through the whole neighbourhood andtook al that were sick to him,
E todos os que o tocaram, ficaram sãos.36 begging him just to let them touch the fringe of his cloak. And al those who touched it were saved.
