| 1 Tendo Jesus acabado de dar estas instruções aos seus doze discípulos, partiu dali para ir ensinar e pregar nas cidades deles. | 1 And it came to pass, when Jesus had made an end of commanding his twelve disciples, he departed thence to teach and to preach in their cities. |
| 2 E como João, estando no cárcere, tivesse ouvido falar das obras de Cristo, enviou dois de seus discípulos, | 2 Now when John had heard in the prison the works of Christ, he sent two of his disciples, |
| 3 a perguntar-lhe: "És tu aquele que há-de vir, ou devemos esperar outro?" | 3 And said unto him, Art thou he that should come, or do we look for another? |
| 4 Jesus respondeu-lhes: "Ide e contai a João o que ouvistes e vistes: | 4 Jesus answered and said unto them, Go and shew John again those things which ye do hear and see: |
| 5 Os cegos vêem, os coxos andam, os leprosos são limpos, os surdos ouvem, os mortos ressuscitam, os pobres são evangelizados; | 5 The blind receive their sight, and the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, and the poor have the gospel preached to them. |
| 6 e bem-aventurado aquele que não encontrar em mim motivo de escândalo." | 6 And blessed is he, whosoever shall not be offended in me. |
| 7 Tendo eles partido, começou Jesus a falar de João às turbas: "Que fostes vós ver ao deserto? Uma cana agitada pelo vento? | 7 And as they departed, Jesus began to say unto the multitudes concerning John, What went ye out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken with the wind? |
| 8 Mas que fostes ver? Um homem vestido de roupas delicadas? Mas os que vestem roupas delicadas vivem nos palácios dos reis. | 8 But what went ye out for to see? A man clothed in soft raiment? behold, they that wear soft clothing are in kings' houses. |
| 9 Mas que fostes ver? Um profeta? Sim, vos digo eu, e ainda mais do que profeta. | 9 But what went ye out for to see? A prophet? yea, I say unto you, and more than a prophet. |
| 10 Porque este é aquele de quem está escrito: Eis que eu envio o meu mensageiro adiante de ti, o qual te preparará o caminho diante de ti. | 10 For this is he, of whom it is written, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, which shall prepare thy way before thee. |
| 11 Na verdade vos digo que entre os nascidos das mulheres não veio ao mundo outro maior que João Baptista. Entretanto, o menor no reino dos céus é maior do que ele. | 11 Verily I say unto you, Among them that are born of women there hath not risen a greater than John the Baptist: notwithstanding he that is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he. |
| 12 Desde os dias de João Baptista até agora, o reino dos céus adquire-se à força, e são os violentos que o arrebatam. | 12 And from the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven suffereth violence, and the violent take it by force. |
| 13 Todos os profetas e a lei profetizaram até João. | 13 For all the prophets and the law prophesied until John. |
| 14 E, se vós quereis compreender, ele mesmo é o Elias que há-de vir. | 14 And if ye will receive it, this is Elias, which was for to come. |
| 15 O que tem ouvidos para ouvir, ouça. | 15 He that hath ears to hear, let him hear. |
| 16 A quem hei-de eu comparar esta geração? É semelhante aos rapazes que estão sentados na praça, e que gritam aos seus companheiros, | 16 But whereunto shall I liken this generation? It is like unto children sitting in the markets, and calling unto their fellows, |
| 17 dizendo: Tocámos flauta, e não bailastes; entoámos endechas e não chorastes. | 17 And saying, We have piped unto you, and ye have not danced; we have mourned unto you, and ye have not lamented. |
| 18 Veio João, que não comia nem bebia, e dizem : Ele tem demônio. | 18 For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, He hath a devil. |
| 19 Veio o Filho do homem, que come e bebe, e dizem: Eis um glutão e um bebedor de vinho, um amigo dos publicanos e dos pecadores. Mas a sabedoria (divina) foi justificada por suas obras." | 19 The Son of man came eating and drinking, and they say, Behold a man gluttonous, and a winebibber, a friend of publicans and sinners. But wisdom is justified of her children. |
| 20 Então começou a exprobar às cidades em que tinham sido operados muitos dos seus milagres, o não terem feito penitência. | 20 Then began he to upbraid the cities wherein most of his mighty works were done, because they repented not: |
| 21 "Ai de ti, Corozain! Ai de ti, Betsaida! porque, se em Tiro e em Sidónia tivessem sido feitos os milagres que se realizaram em vós, há muito tempo que teriam feito penitência em cilísio e em cinza, | 21 Woe unto thee, Chorazin! woe unto thee, Bethsaida! for if the mighty works, which were done in you, had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes. |
| 22 Por isso vos digo que haverá menor rigor para Tiro e Sidónia no dia do juízo, que para vós. | 22 But I say unto you, It shall be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon at the day of judgment, than for you. |
| 23 E tu, Cafarnaum, elevar-te-ás porventura até ao céu? Não, hás-de ser abatida até ao inferno (Is. 14,13-15). Se em Sodoma tivessem sido feitos os milagres que se fizeram em ti, ainda hoje existiria. | 23 And thou, Capernaum, which art exalted unto heaven, shalt be brought down to hell: for if the mighty works, which have been done in thee, had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until this day. |
| 24 Por isso vos digo que no dia do juízo haverá menos rigor para a terra de Sodoma que para ti." | 24 But I say unto you, That it shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom in the day of judgment, than for thee. |
| 25 Então Jesus, falando novamente, disse: "Graças te dou, ó Pai, Senhor do céu e da terra, porque escondeste estas coisas aos sábios e aos prudentes, e as revelaste aos pequeninos. | 25 At that time Jesus answered and said, I thank thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them unto babes. |
| 26 Assim é, ó Pai, porque assim foi do teu agrado. | 26 Even so, Father: for so it seemed good in thy sight. |
| 27 Todas as coisas me foram entregues por meu Pai; e ninguém conhece o Filho senão o Pai; nem alguém conhece o Pai senão o Filho, e aquele a quem o Filho o quiser revelar. | 27 All things are delivered unto me of my Father: and no man knoweth the Son, but the Father; neither knoweth any man the Father, save the Son, and he to whomsoever the Son will reveal him. |
| 28 Vinde a mim todos os que estais fatigados e carregados, e eu vos aliviarei. | 28 Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. |
| 29 Tomai sobre vós o meu jugo, e aprendei de mim, que sou manso e humilde de coração, e achareis descanso para as vossas almas. | 29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. |
| 30 Porque o meu jugo é suave, e o meu peso leve." | 30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light. |
