| 1 Aquele que vive eternamente, criou todas as coisas, sem excepção. Só o Senhor será reconhecido justo. Ele é o rei invencível que subsiste para sempre. | 1 The Eternal is the judge of all things without exception; the LORD alone is just. |
| 2 Quem é capaz de contar as suas obras? | 2 Whom has he made equal to describing his works, and who can probe his mighty deeds? |
| 3 Quem poderá penetrar as suas maravilhas? | 3 Who can measure his majestic power, or exhaust the tale of his mercies? |
| 4 Quem poderá descrever o poder (soberano) da sua grandeza? Quem empreenderá enumerar as suas misericórdias? | 4 One cannot lessen, nor increase, nor penetrate the wonders of the LORD. |
| 5 Nada se pode diminuir ou acrescentar, nem é possível compreender as maravilhas de Deus. | 5 When a man ends he is only beginning, and when he stops he is still bewildered. |
| 6 Quando o homem tiver acabado, então estará no começo, e, quando cessar (a pesquisa), ficará perplexo. | 6 What is man, of what worth is he? the good, the evil in him, what are these? |
| 7 Que é o homem, e para que presta? E que bem ou que mal pode ele fazer? | 7 The sum of a man's days is great if it reaches a hundred years: |
| 8 A duração dos dias do homem, quando muito, é de cem anos, mas, qual gota de água do mar, ou grão de areia, assim são estes poucos anos comparados com o dia da eternidade. | 8 Like a drop of sea water, like a grain of sand, so are these few years among the days of eternity. |
| 9 Por isso é que o Senhor é paciente com os homens, e derrama sobre eles a sua misericórdia. | 9 That is why the LORD is patient with men and showers upon them his mercy. |
| 10 Ele vê que a presunção do seu coração é má, e reconhece que o seu fim é deplorável. | 10 He sees and understands that their death is grievous, and so he forgives them all the more. |
| 11 Por isso é que os trata com a plenitude da sua doçura, e mostra-lhes o caminho da equidade. | 11 Man may be merciful to his fellow man, but the LORD'S mercy reaches all flesh, |
| 12 A misericórdia do homem tem por objecto o seu próximo, porém a misericórdia de Deus estende-se a todo o ser vivo. | 12 Reproving, admonishing, teaching, as a shepherd guides his flock; |
| 13 Cheio de compaixão, ensina e disciplina (os homens), como um pastor faz ao seu rebanho. | 13 Merciful to those who accept his guidance, who are diligent in his precepts. |
| 14 Compadece-se daquele que recebe a doutrina da sua misericórdia, e do que se apressa a cumprir os seus mandamentos. | 14 My son, to your charity add no reproach, nor spoil any gift by harsh words. |
| 15 Filho, não mistures a repreensão com o benefício, nem juntes às tuas dádivas a tristeza duma palavra má. | 15 Like dew that abates a burning wind, so does a word improve a gift. |
| 16 Porventura o orvalho não mitiga o calor ardente? Assim vale mais a palavra (doce) do que a dádiva. | 16 Sometimes the word means more than the gift; both are offered by a kindly man. |
| 17 Porventura a palavra (doce) não vale mais que o próprio dom? Mas uma e outra coisa se encontra no homem justo. | 17 Only a fool upbraids before giving; a grudging gift wears out the expectant eyes. |
| 18 O insensato impropera àsperamente; o dom do invejoso consome os olhos. | 18 Be informed before speaking; before sickness prepare the cure. |
| 19 Antes de Julgar (os outros) procura ser justo, e aprende, antes de falar. | 19 Before you are judged, seek merit for yourself, and at the time of visitation you will have a ransom. |
| 20 Antes da enfermidade emprega cuidados (para a evitar), interroga-te a ti mesmo antes do juízo, e encontrarás misericórdia diante de Deus. | 20 Before you have fallen, humble yourself; when you have sinned, show repentance. |
| 21 Humilha-te antes da doença, e mostra o teu proceder no tempo da enfermidade. | 21 Delay not to forsake sins, neglect it not till you are in distress. |
| 22 Nada te embarace de orar sempre, e não te envergonhes de praticar boas obras até à morte, porque a recompensa de Deus dura para sempre. | 22 Let nothing prevent the prompt payment of your vows; wait not to fulfill them when you are dying. |
| 23 Prepara a tua alma antes da oração, e não sejas como um homem que tenta a Deus. | 23 Before making a vow have the means to fulfill it; be not one who tries the LORD. |
| 24 Lembra-te da ira do último dia, e do tempo em que Deus castigará, desviando o seu rosto. | 24 Think of wrath and the day of death, the time of vengeance when he will hide his face. |
| 25 Lembra-te da pobreza no tempo da abundância, e das necessidades da indigência no dia das riquezas. | 25 Remember the time of hunger in the time of plenty, poverty and want in the day of wealth. |
| 26 Desde manhã até à tarde se muda o tempo, e tudo isto se faz num momento aos olhos de Deus. | 26 Between morning and evening the weather changes; before the LORD all things are fleeting. |
| 27 o homem sábio andará com temor em tudo, e nos dias do pecado se guardará da preguiça, | 27 A wise man is circumspect in all things; when sin is rife he keeps himself from wrongdoing. |
| 28 Todo o homem hábil conhece a sabedoria, e dá louvor ao que a encontrou. | 28 Any learned man should make wisdom known, and he who attains to her should declare her praise; |
| 29 Os homens sensatos nas palavras, obram também com sabedoria, compreendem a verdade e a justiça, e espalham como chuva provérbios e sentenças. | 29 Those trained in her words must show their wisdom, dispensing sound proverbs like life-giving waters. |
| 30 Não te deixes ir atrás das tuas más tendências e refreia os teus apetites. | 30 Go not after your lusts, but keep your desires in check. |
| 31 Se condescenderes com a tua alma no que deseja, ela fará de ti a alegria dos teus inimigos. | 31 If you satisfy your lustful appetites they will make you the sport of your enemies. |
| 32 Não te comprazas em ir às assembleias, mesmo as mais pequenas, porque nelas comete-se incessantemente o mal. | 32 Have no joy in the pleasures of a moment which bring on poverty redoubled; |
| 33 Não te empobreças, pedindo dinheiro emprestado para rivalizares (com os outros em despesas), não tendo tu nada no bolso; isto equivaleria a seres inimigo da tua própria vida. | 33 Become not a glutton and a winebibber with nothing in your purse. |
