| 1 Então, tomando a palavra Elifaz de Teman, disse: | 1 Then Eliphaz the Themanite answered, and said: |
| 2 Se começarmos a falar-e, talvez tu o leves a mal; | 2 If we begin to speak to thee, perhaps thou wilt take it ill, but who can withhold the words he hath conceived? |
| 3 mas, quem poderá conter a palavra concebida? Eis que ensinaste a muitos, deste vigor a mãos cansadas. | 3 Behold thou hast taught many, and thou hast strengthened the weary hands: |
| 4 A s tuas palavras firmaram-os que vacilavam, fortaleceste os joelhos trêmulos; | 4 Thy words have confirmed them that were staggering, and thou hast strengthened the trembling knees: |
| 5 porém, agora que veio sobre li (a desgraça), desfaleceste; feriu-te, e tu te perturbaste. | 5 But now the scourge is come upon thee, and thou faintest: it hath touched thee, and thou art troubled. |
| 6 A tua piedade não é a tua esperança? A perfeição dos teus caminhos não é a lua segurança? | 6 Where is thy fear, thy fortitude, thy patience, and the perfection of thy ways? |
| 7 Lembra-te: que inocente pereceu jamais? ou quando foram os justos destruídos? | 7 Remember, I pray thee, who ever perished being innocent? or when were the just destroyed? |
| 8 Quanto a mim, tenho visto que os que praticam a iniquidade, os que semeiam dores, as segam. | 8 On the contrary I have seen those who work iniquity, and sow sorrows, and reap them, |
| 9 Perecem, a um sopro de Deus, são consumidos por um sopro da sua ira. | 9 Perishing by the blast of God, and consumed by the spirit of his wrath. |
| 10 (Assim é abafado) o rugido do leão, o grito da leoa; (assim) os dentes dos cachorros dos leões são despedaçados. | 10 The roaring of the lion, and the voice of the lioness, and the teeth of the whelps of lions are broken: |
| 11 O leão morre por falta de presa, e os cachorros dos leões são dispersos. | 11 The tiger hath perished for want of prey, and the young lions are scattered abroad. |
| 12 A mim foi dita uma palavra em segredo, os meus ouvidos, como às furtadelas, perceberam o seu débil som. | 12 Now there was a word spoken to me in private, and my ears by stealth as it were received the veins of its whisper. |
| 13 No horror de uma visão noturna, quando o sono costuma apoderar-se dos homens, | 13 In the horror of a vision by night, when deep sleep is wont to hold men, |
| 14 o medo e o tremor me assaltaram, e todos os meus ossos estremeceram. | 14 Fear seized upon me, and trembling, and all my bones were affrighted: |
| 15 Ao passar diante de mim um espirito, os meus cabelos se arripiaram. | 15 And when a spirit passed before me, the hair of my flesh stood up. |
| 16 Parou alguém diante (de mim), cujo rosto eu não conhecia, um espectro diante dos meus olhos, e ouvi uma voz como de branda viração (que dista): | 16 There stood one whose countenance I knew not, an image before my eyes, and I heard the voice as it were of a gentle wind: |
| 17 Porventura o homem, em confronto com Deus, será tido por justo? ou será puro diante do seu Criador? | 17 Shall man be justified in comparison of God, or shall a man be more pure than his maker? |
| 18 Ainda os mesmos que o servem, não são estáveis, e (até) nos seus anjos encontrou defeito. | 18 Behold they that serve him are not steadfast, and in his angels he found wickedness: |
| 19 Quanto mais aqueles que habitam casas de barro, os quais têm a terra por fundamento, serão consumidos como pela traça? | 19 How much more shall they that dwell in houses of clay, who have an earthly foundation, be consumed as with the moth? |
| 20 De manhã até à tarde são destroçados, sem que ninguém dê couta, para sempre. | 20 From morning till evening they shall be cut down: and because no one understandeth, they shall perish for ever. |
| 21 A corda da sua tenda (vida) é cortada, perecem, morrem, mas não em sabedoria (isto é como insensatos). | 21 And they that shall be left, shall be taken away from them: they shall die, and not in wisdom. |
