| 1 Desta forma, pois, quando chegou o sétimo mês, os filhos de Israel estavam nas suas cidades. Congregou-se, então, todo o povo como um só homem na praça que está diante da porta das Aguas, e disseram a Esdras, o escriba, que trouxesse o livro da lei de Moisés, que o Senhor tinha prescrito a Israel. | 1 all the people gathered as one man in the square in front of the Water Gate, and asked the scribe Ezrato bring the Book of the Law of Moses which Yahweh had prescribed for Israel. |
| 2 O sacerdote Esdras levou a lei para diante da multidão dos homens, das mulheres e de todos os que a podiam entender, no primeiro dia do sétimo mês. | 2 Accordingly, on the first day of the seventh month, the priest Ezra brought the Law before theassembly, consisting of men, women and al those old enough to understand. |
| 3 Esdras esteve a ler o livro claramente, no meio da praça que fica diante da porta das Aguas, desde manhã até ao meio-dia, na presença dos homens, das mulheres e dos que (já) a podiam entender, e todo o povo tinha os ouvidos atentos à leitura do livro. | 3 In the square in front of the Water Gate, in the presence of the men and women, and of those oldenough to understand, he read from the book from dawn till noon; al the people listened attentively to the Bookof the Law. |
| 4 Esdras, o escriba, pôs-se em pé sobre o estrado de madeira, que tinha mandado fazer para falar; estavam em pé, junto dele, à sua direita, Matatias, Semeia, Ania, Uria, Helcia e Maasia ; à sua esquerda, Fadaia, Misael, Melquias, Hasum, Hasbadana, Zacarias e Mosolão. | 4 The scribe Ezra stood on a wooden dais erected for the purpose; beside him stood, on his right,Mattithiah, Shema, Anaiah, Uriah, Hilkiah and Maaseiah; on his left, Pedaiah, Mishael, Malchijah, Hashum,Hashbaddanah, Zechariah, and Meshul am. |
| 5 Esdras abriu o livro à vista de todo o povo, porque ele estava mais alto que todo o povo, e, logo que o abriu, todo o povo se pôs em pé (em sinal de respeito pela palavra de Deus). | 5 In full view of al the people -- since he stood higher than them al -- Ezra opened the book; and whenhe opened it, al the people stood up. |
| 6 Esdras bendisse ao Senhor, o Deus grande, e todo o povo, levantando as mãos, respondeu: Amen, Amen. Depois inclinaram-se e, prostrados por terra, adoraram a Deus. | 6 Then Ezra blessed Yahweh, the great God, and al the people raised their hands and answered, 'Amen!Amen!'; then they bowed down and, face to the ground, prostrated themselves before Yahweh. |
| 7 Josué, Bani, Serebias, Jamin, Acub, Septai, Odias, Maasias, Celita, Azarias, Jozabed, Hanan, Falaia e os outros Levitas faziam estar o povo em silêncio, para ouvir a lei; cada um conservava-se no seu lugar. | 7 And Jeshua, Bani, Sherebiah, Jamin, Akkub, Shabbethai, Hodiah, Maaseiah, Kelita, Azariah, Jozabab,Hanan, Pelaiah, who were Levites, explained the Law to the people, while the people al kept their places. |
| 8 Eles leram o livro da lei de Deus distinta e claramente para se entender, e o povo entendia quando se estava lendo. | 8 Ezra read from the book of the Law of God, translating and giving the sense; so the reading wasunderstood. |
| 9 Neemias, governador, Esdras, sacerdote e escriba, e os Levitas, que interpretavam a lei a todo o povo, disseram: Este dia é consagrado ao Senhor nosso Deus; não estejais tristes, nem choreis. Com efeito, todo o povo, ouvindo as palavras da lei, chorava. | 9 Then His Excel ency Nehemiah and the priest-scribe Ezra and the Levites who were instructing thepeople said to al the people, 'Today is sacred to Yahweh your God. Do not be mournful, do not weep.' For thepeople were all in tears as they listened to the words of the Law. |
| 10 (Neemias) disse-lhes: Ide, comei carnes gordas, bebei vinho misturado com mel, e mandai quinhões aos que não têm nada preparado para si, porque este é um dia santo do Senhor; não estejais tristes, porque a alegria do Senhor é a nossa fortaleza. | 10 He then said, 'You may go; eat what is rich, drink what is sweet and send a helping to the man whohas nothing prepared. For today is sacred to our Lord. Do not be sad: the joy of Yahweh is your stronghold.' |
| 11 Os Levitas faziam estar todo o povo em silêncio, dizendo: Estai calados, não vos aflijais, porque este dia é santo. | 11 And the Levites calmed al the people down, saying, 'Keep quiet; this is a sacred day. Do not be sad.' |
| 12 Todo o povo, pois, foi comer e beber, mandou quinhões e entregou-se a grande regozijo, porque tinham entendido as palavras que Esdras lhes havia ensinado. | 12 Then al the people went off to eat and drink and give helpings away and enjoy themselves to the ful ,since they had understood the meaning of what had been proclaimed to them. |
| 13 Ao outro dia os chefes das famílias de todo o povo, os sacerdotes e os Levitas, congregaram-se na presença de Esdras, o escriba, para que lhes interpretasse as palavras da lei. | 13 On the second day, the heads of families of the whole people, and the priests and Levites, gatheredround the scribe Ezra to study the words of the Law. |
| 14 Acharam escrito na lei ter mandado o Senhor, por meio de Moisés, que os filhos de Israel habitassem debaixo de tendas, no dia solene do sétimo mês, | 14 And written in the Law that Yahweh had prescribed through Moses they found that the Israelites wereto live in shelters during the feast of the seventh month. |
| 15 e que apregoassem e divulgassem por todas as suas cidades e em Jerusalém o seguinte aviso: Saí ao monte, trazei ramos de oliveira cultivada e de oliveira selvagem, de murta, de palmeira e de árvores frondosas, para que se façam as tendas conforme está escrito. | 15 So they issued a proclamation and had it circulated in al their towns and in Jerusalem: 'Go into thehil s and bring branches of olive, pine, myrtle, palm and other leafy trees to make shelters, as it says in the book.' |
| 16 Saiu, pois, o povo, e trouxe (os ramos). Fizeram para si tendas, cada um sobre o seu terraço, nos seus átrios, no átrio da casa de Deus, na praça da porta das Aguas e na praça da porta de Efraim. | 16 The people went out; they brought branches and made shelters for themselves, each man on his roof,in their courtyards, in the precincts of the Temple of God, in the square of the Water Gate and in the square ofthe Ephraim Gate. |
| 17 Toda a multidão dos que tinham vindo do cativeiro fez tendas, e habitou nelas. Os filhos de Israel não tinham feito assim desde o tempo de Josué, filho de Nun, até aquele dia. A alegria foi extraordinária. | 17 The whole assembly, al who had returned from the captivity, put up shelters and lived in them; thisthe Israelites had not done from the days of Joshua son of Nun til that day, and there was very greatmerrymaking. |
| 18 (Esdras) leu o livro da lei de Deus todos os dias, desde o primeiro até o último; celebraram esta solenidade durante sete dias, e no oitavo dia houve uma reunião solene, segundo o rito. | 18 Each day, from the first day to the last one, Ezra read from the Book of the Law of God. Theycelebrated the feast for seven days; on the eighth day, as prescribed, they held a solemn assembly. |
