| 1 Enquanto, porém, Jeroboão estava sobre o altar e lançava o incenso, um homem de Deus, vindo de Judá, chegou a Betel, por ordem do Senhor. | 1 There came to Bethel at Yahweh's command a man of God from Judah, just as Jeroboam wasstanding by the altar to offer the sacrifice, |
| 2 Clamando contra o altar, da parte do Senhor, disse: Altar, altar! Eis o que diz o Senhor: Na casa de Davide nascerá um filho, que se chamará Josias, o qual degolará sobre ti os sacerdotes dos lugares altos, que agora queimam incensos sobre ti, e queimar-se-ão sobre ti ossos de homens. | 2 and at Yahweh's command this man denounced the altar. 'Altar, altar,' he said, 'Yahweh says this, "Ason is to be born to the House of David, Josiah by name, and on you he wil slaughter the priests of the highplaces who have offered sacrifice on you, and on you he will burn human bones." ' |
| 3 Ao mesmo tempo, como prova da verdade da sua predição, acrescentou: Eis o sinal (que vos fará saber) que o Senhor falou: O altar se partirá, e a cinza que está por cima, se espalhará. | 3 At the same time he gave a sign. 'This is the sign', he said, 'that Yahweh has spoken, "This altar willburst apart and the ashes which are on it will be spilt." ' |
| 4 Tendo o rei ouvido as palavras do homem de Deus, que ele proferia em alta voz contra o altar em Betel, estendeu a sua mão do altar, dizendo: Prendei-o. E logo a mão, que ele estendera contra o homem de Deus, se secou, e ele não a pôde trazer a si. | 4 When the king heard how the man of God denounced the altar of Bethel, he stretched out his handfrom the altar, saying, 'Seize him!' But the hand he stretched out against the man withered, and he could notdraw it back, |
| 5 O altar também se partiu e espalhou-se a cinza do altar, conforme o sinal o homem de Deus tinha dado em nome do Senhor. | 5 and the altar burst apart and the ashes from the altar were spilt, in accordance with the sign given bythe man of God at Yahweh's command. |
| 6 O rei disse ao homem de Deus: Faze oração ao Senhor, teu Deus, e roga-lhe por mim, para que me seja restituída a minha mão. O homem de Deus fez oração ao Senhor, e o rei trouxe a si a sua mão, ficando como antes era. | 6 The king said to the man of God, 'I beg you to placate Yahweh your God, and so restore me the use ofmy hand.' The man of God placated Yahweh; the king's hand was restored as it had been before. |
| 7 Disse mais o rei ao homem de Deus: Vem comigo a minha casa, e eu te darei presente. | 7 The king then said to the man of God, 'Come home with me and refresh yourself, and I shall give you apresent,' |
| 8 O homem de Deus respondeu ao rei: Ainda que tu me desses metade da tua casa, eu não iria contigo, nem comeria pão, nem beberia água neste lugar, | 8 but the man of God replied to the king, 'Were you to give me half your palace, I would not go with you. Iwil eat and drink nothing here, |
| 9 porque assim me foi mandado da parte do Senhor, que me ordenou: Não comerás (lá) pão, nem beberás água, nem voltarás pelo caminho por onde foste. | 9 for I have had Yahweh's order, "You are to eat or drink nothing, nor to return by the way you came." ' |
| 10 Ele, pois, foi-se por outro caminho, e voltou pelo mesmo por onde tinha ido a Betel. | 10 And he left by another road and did not return by the way he had come to Bethel. |
| 11 Ora em Betel morava um velho profeta, com o qual foram ter seus filhos, contando-lhe todas as obras que o homem de Deus tinha feito, naquele dia, em Betel, e referindo a seu pai as palavras que ele tinha dito ao rei. | 11 Now there was an old prophet living in Bethel, and his sons came to tel him al that the man of Godhad done in Bethel that day; and the words which he had said to the king, they told these to their father too. |
| 12 Seu pai disse-lhes: Por que caminho foi ele? Os filhos mostraram-lhe o caminho por onde voltara o homem de Deus, que tinha ido de Judá. | 12 'Which road did he take?' their father asked. His sons showed him the road which the man of Godwho came from Judah had taken. |
| 13 Ele disse a seus filhos: Aparelhai-me o jumento. Tendo-o eles aparelhado, montou nele | 13 'Saddle the donkey for me,' he said to his sons; they saddled the donkey for him and he mounted. |
| 14 e foi após o homem de Deus. Encontrou-o sentado, debaixo dum terebinto, e disse-lhe: Tu és o homem de Deus que vieste de Judá? Ele respondeu-lhe: Sou eu mesmo. | 14 He fol owed the man of God and found him sitting under a terebinth. 'Are you the man of God', hesaid, 'who came from Judah?' 'I am,' he replied. |
| 15 Ele disse-lhe: Vem comigo a casa comer pão. | 15 'Come home with me,' he said, 'and take some food.' |
| 16 Ele respondeu: Não posso voltar, nem ir contigo, nem comerei pão, nem beberei água neste lugar, | 16 'I cannot go back with you,' he answered, 'or eat or drink anything here, |
| 17 porque o Senhor, com palavras de Senhor, me falou, dizendo: Não comerás pão, nem beberás água nesse lugar, nem voltarás pelo caminho por onde tiveres ido. | 17 for I have received Yahweh's order, "You are to eat or drink nothing there, nor to return by the wayyou came." ' |
| 18 O outro disse-lhe: Eu também sou profeta como tu, e um anjo falou-me da parte do Senhor, dizendo: Leva-o contigo a tua casa, para que ele com a pão e beba água. Enganou-o, | 18 'I too am a prophet like you,' the other replied, 'and an angel told me this by Yahweh's command,"Bring him back with you to your house to eat and drink." ' He was lying to him. |
| 19 e levou-o consigo. Comeu, pois, pão em sua casa e bebeu água. | 19 The man of God went back with him; he ate and drank at his house. |
| 20 Estando à mesa, o Senhor falou ao profeta, que o tinha feito voltar. | 20 As they were sitting at table a word of Yahweh came to the prophet who had brought him back, |
| 21 (Este profeta) gritou ao homem de Deus, que tinha vindo de Judá: Eis o que diz o Senhor: Porque não obedeceste à palavra do Senhor e não guardaste o mandamento que o Senhor teu Deus te tinha imposto, | 21 and he addressed the man of God who came from Judah. 'Yahweh says this,' he said. ' "Since you have defied Yahweh's command and not obeyed the orders which Yahweh your God gave you, |
| 22 porque voltaste, com este pão e bebeste água, no lugar em que te mandou que não comesses pão, nem bebesses água, o teu cadáver não será levado ao sepulcro de teus pais. | 22 but have come back and eaten and drunk where he forbade you to eat and drink, your corpse wilnever reach the tomb of your ancestors." ' |
| 23 Logo que comeu e bebeu, o velho profeta aparelhou o seu jumento para o profeta a quem tinha feito voltar. | 23 After he had eaten and drunk, the prophet saddled the donkey for him, and he turned about and wentaway. |
| 24 Indo este no caminho, um leão saiu-lhe ao encontro e matou-o, e o seu cadáver ficou estendido no caminho; o jumento estava parado junto dele, e o leão também ficou ao pé do cadáver. | 24 A lion met him on the road and killed him; his corpse lay stretched out on the road; the donkey stoodthere beside it; the lion stood by the corpse too. |
| 25 Ora, passando por ali uns homens, viram o cadáver estendido no caminho, e o leão posto ao pé do cadáver, e foram e divulgaram isto na cidade onde morava aquele velho profeta. | 25 People going by saw the corpse lying on the road and the lion standing by the corpse, and went andspoke about it in the town where the old prophet lived. |
| 26 Tendo ouvido isto o profeta, que o tinha feito voltar do caminho, disse: E o homem de Deus, que foi desobediente à palavra do Senhor, e o Senhor o entregou a um leão, que o despedaçou e matou, conforme a palavra que o Senhor lhe tinha dito. | 26 When the prophet who had made the man turn back heard about it, he said, 'That is the man of Godwho defied Yahweh's command! Yahweh has handed him over to the lion, which has mauled and kil ed him, justas Yahweh had foretold it would.' |
| 27 Depois disse a seus filhos: Aparelhai-me o jumento. Aparelharam-no, | 27 He said to his sons, 'Saddle the donkey for me,' and they saddled it. |
| 28 e ele partiu e encontrou o cadáver estendido no caminho, com o jumento e o leão postos junto dele; o leão não tinha comido o cadáver, nem feito mal ao jumento. | 28 He set off and found the man's corpse lying on the road with the donkey and the lion standing besidethe corpse; the lion had neither eaten the corpse nor mauled the donkey. |
| 29 Pegou, então, o profeta no cadáver do homem de Deus, pô-lo em cima do seu jumento, e, voltando, levou-o à sua cidade para o chorar. | 29 The prophet lifted the corpse of the man of God and put it on the donkey and brought it back to thetown where he lived to hold mourning for him and bury him. |
| 30 Depositou o cadáver no seu sepulcro e pranteou-o, dizendo: Ai, ai, meu irmão! | 30 He laid the corpse in his own tomb, and they raised the mourning cry for him, 'Alas, my brother!' |
| 31 Depois do enterro, disse ele a seus filhos: Quando eu morrer, sepultai-me no sepulcro em que foi enterrado o homem de Deus, ponde os meus ossos junto dos seus, | 31 After burying him, the prophet said to his sons, 'When I die, bury me in the same tomb as the man ofGod, lay my bones beside his. |
| 32 pois com certeza se verificará o que ele predisse da parte do Senhor contra o altar, que está em Betel, e contra todos os templos dos lugares altos, que existem nas cidades da Samaria. | 32 For the word he uttered at Yahweh's command against the altar of Bethel and against al the shrinesof the high places in the towns of Samaria will certainly come true.' |
| 33 Depois destas coisas, Jeroboão não se converteu da sua péssima vida, antes, ao contrário, dentre os homens do povo fez sacerdotes dos lugares altos: todo aquele que queria era consagrado e tornava-se sacerdote dos lugares altos. | 33 Jeroboam did not give up his wicked ways after this incident, but went on appointing priests for thehigh places from the common people. He consecrated as priests of the high places any who wished to be. |
| 34 Por esta causa a casa de Jeroboão pecou, e foi destruída e extinta da face da terra. | 34 Such conduct made the House of Jeroboam a sinful House, and caused its ruin and extinction fromthe face of the earth. |
