| 1 Vós, também, ó mulheres, sede submissas aos vossos maridos. Se alguns não obedecem à palavra, serão conquistados, mesmo sem a palavra da pregação, pelo simples procedimento de suas mulheres, | 1 In like manner also let wives be subject to their husbands: that if any believe not the word, they may be won without the word, by the conversation of the wives. |
| 2 ao observarem vossa vida casta e reservada. | 2 Considering your chaste conversation with fear. |
| 3 Não seja o vosso adorno o que aparece externamente: cabelos trançados, ornamentos de ouro, vestidos elegantes; | 3 Whose adorning let it not be the outward plaiting of the hair, or the wearing of gold, or the putting on of apparel: |
| 4 mas tende aquele ornato interior e oculto do coração, a pureza incorruptível de um espírito suave e pacífico, o que é tão precioso aos olhos de Deus. | 4 But the hidden man of the heart in the incorruptibility of a quiet and a meek spirit, which is rich in the sight of God. |
| 5 Era assim que outrora se ornavam as santas mulheres que esperavam em Deus; eram submissas a seus maridos, | 5 For after this manner heretofore the holy women also, who trusted in God, adorned themselves, being in subjection to their own husbands: |
| 6 como Sara que obedecia a Abraão, chamando-o de senhor. Dela vos tornais filhas pela prática do bem sem temor de perturbação alguma. | 6 As Sara obeyed Abraham, calling him lord: whose daughters you are, doing well, and not fearing any disturbance. |
| 7 Do mesmo modo vós, ó maridos, comportai-vos sabiamente no vosso convívio com as vossas mulheres, pois são de um sexo mais fraco. Porquanto elas são herdeiras, com o mesmo direito que vós outros, da graça que dá a vida. Tratai-as com todo o respeito, para que nada se oponha às vossas orações. | 7 Ye husbands, likewise dwelling with them according to knowledge, giving honour to the female as to the weaker vessel, and as to the co-heirs of the grace of life: that your prayers be not hindered. |
| 8 Finalmente, tende todos um só coração e uma só alma, sentimentos de amor fraterno, de misericórdia, de humildade. | 8 And in fine, be ye all of one mind, having compassion one of another, being lovers of the brotherhood, merciful, modest, humble: |
| 9 Não pagueis mal com mal, nem injúria com injúria. Ao contrário, abençoai, pois para isso fostes chamados, para que sejais herdeiros da bênção. | 9 Not rendering evil for evil, nor railing for railing, but contrariwise, blessing: for unto this are you called, that you may inherit a blessing. |
| 10 Com efeito, quem quiser amar a vida e ver dias felizes, refreie sua língua do mal e seus lábios de palavras enganadoras; | 10 For he that will love life, and see good days, let him refrain his tongue from evil, and his lips that they speak no guile. |
| 11 aparte-se do mal e faça o bem, busque a paz e siga-a. | 11 Let him decline from evil, and do good: let him seek after peace and pursue it: |
| 12 Porque os olhos do Senhor estão sobre os justos e seus ouvidos, atentos a seus rogos; mas a força do Senhor está contra os que fazem o mal ( Sl 33,13-17 ). | 12 Because the eyes of the Lord are upon the just, and his ears unto their prayers: but the countenance of the Lord upon them that do evil things. |
| 13 Se fordes zelosos do bem, quem vos poderá fazer mal? | 13 And who is he that can hurt you, if you be zealous of good? |
| 14 E até sereis felizes, se padecerdes alguma coisa por causa da justiça! | 14 But if also you suffer any thing for justice' sake, blessed are ye. And be not afraid of their fear, and be not troubled. |
| 15 Portanto, não temais as suas ameaças e não vos turbeis. Antes, santificai em vossos corações Cristo, o Senhor. Estai sempre prontos a responder para vossa defesa a todo aquele que vos pedir a razão de vossa esperança, mas fazei-o com suavidade e respeito. | 15 But sanctify the Lord Christ in your hearts, being ready always to satisfy every one that asketh you a reason of that hope which is in you. |
| 16 Tende uma consciência reta a fim de que, mesmo naquilo em que dizem mal de vós, sejam confundidos os que desacreditam o vosso santo procedimento em Cristo. | 16 But with modesty and fear, having a good conscience: that whereas they speak evil of you, they may be ashamed who falsely accuse your good conversation in Christ. |
| 17 Aliás, é melhor padecer, se Deus assim o quiser, por fazer o bem do que por fazer o mal. | 17 For it is better doing well (if such be the will of God) to suffer, than doing ill. |
| 18 Pois também Cristo morreu uma vez pelos nossos pecados – o Justo pelos injustos – para nos conduzir a Deus. Padeceu a morte em sua carne, mas foi vivificado quanto ao espírito. | 18 Because Christ also died once for our sins, the just for the unjust: that he might offer us to God, being put to death indeed in the flesh, but enlivened in the spirit, |
| 19 É nesse mesmo espírito que ele foi pregar aos espíritos que eram detidos no cárcere, àqueles que outrora, nos dias de Noé, tinham sido rebeldes, | 19 In which also coming he preached to those spirits that were in prison: |
| 20 quando Deus aguardava com paciência, enquanto se edificava a arca, na qual poucas pessoas, isto é, apenas oito se salvaram por meio da água. | 20 Which had been some time incredulous, when they waited for the patience of God in the days of Noe, when the ark was a building: wherein a few, that is, eight souls, were saved by water. |
| 21 Essa água prefigurava o batismo de agora, que vos salva também a vós, não pela purificação das impurezas do corpo, mas pela que consiste em pedir a Deus uma consciência boa, pela Ressurreição de Jesus Cristo. | 21 Whereunto baptism being of the like form, now saveth you also: not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the examination of a good conscience towards God by the resurrection of Jesus Christ. |
| 22 Esse Jesus Cristo, tendo subido ao céu, está assentado à direita de Deus, depois de ter recebido a submissão dos anjos, dos principados e das potestades. | 22 Who is on the right hand of God, swallowing down death, that we might be made heirs of life everlasting: being gone into heaven, the angels and powers and virtues being made subject to him. |
