Et angelo ecclesiæ Sardis scribe : Hæc dicit qui habet septem spiritus Dei, et septem stellas : Scio opera tua, quia nomen habes quod vivas, et mortuus es.1 'Write to the angel of the church in Sardis and say, "Here is the message of the one who holds theseven spirits of God and the seven stars: I know about your behaviour: how you are reputed to be alive and yetare dead.
Esto vigilans, et confirma cetera, quæ moritura erant. Non enim invenio opera tua plena coram Deo meo.2 Wake up; put some resolve into what little vigour you have left: it is dying fast. So far I have failed tonotice anything in your behaviour that my God could possibly cal perfect;
In mente ergo habe qualiter acceperis, et audieris, et serva, et p?nitentiam age. Si ergo non vigilaveris, veniam ad te tamquam fur et nescies qua hora veniam ad te.3 remember how you first heard the message. Hold on to that. Repent! If you do not wake up, I shalcome to you like a thief, and you wil have no idea at what hour I shal come upon you.
Sed habes pauca nomina in Sardis qui non inquinaverunt vestimenta sua : et ambulabunt mecum in albis, quia digni sunt.4 There are a few in Sardis, it is true, who have kept their robes unstained, and they are fit to come withme, dressed in white.
Qui vicerit, sic vestietur vestimentis albis, et non delebo nomen ejus de libro vitæ, et confitebor nomen ejus coram Patre meo, et coram angelis ejus.5 Anyone who proves victorious wil be dressed, like these, in white robes; I shal not blot that name outof the book of life, but acknowledge it in the presence of my Father and his angels.
Qui habet aurem, audiat quid Spiritus dicat ecclesiis.
Let anyone who can hear, listen to what the Spirit is saying to the churches."
Et angelo Philadelphiæ ecclesiæ scribe : Hæc dicit Sanctus et Verus, qui habet clavem David : qui aperit, et nemo claudit : claudit, et nemo aperit :7 'Write to the angel of the church in Philadelphia and say, "Here is the message of the holy and true onewho has the key of David, so that when he opens, no one wil close, and when he closes, no one wil open:
Scio opera tua. Ecce dedi coram te ostium apertum, quod nemo potest claudere : quia modicam habes virtutem, et servasti verbum meum, et non negasti nomen meum.8 I know about your activities. Look, I have opened in front of you a door that no one will be able to close-- and I know that though you are not very strong, you have kept my commandments and not disowned myname.
Ecce dabo de synagoga Satanæ, qui dicunt se Judæos esse, et non sunt, sed mentiuntur : ecce faciam illos ut veniant, et adorent ante pedes tuos : et scient quia ego dilexi te,9 Look, I am going to make the synagogue of Satan -- those who falsely claim to be Jews, but are liars, because they are no such thing -- I wil make them come and fal at your feet and recognize that I have lovedyou.
quoniam servasti verbum patientiæ meæ, et ego servabo te ab hora tentationis, quæ ventura est in orbem universum tentare habitantes in terra.10 Because you have kept my commandment to persevere, I wil keep you safe in the time of trial whichis coming for the whole world, to put the people of the world to the test.
Ecce venio cito : tene quod habes, ut nemo accipiat coronam tuam.11 I am coming soon: hold firmly to what you already have, and let no one take your victor's crown awayfrom you.
Qui vicerit, faciam illum columnam in templo Dei mei, et foras non egredietur amplius : et scribam super eum nomen Dei mei, et nomen civitatis Dei mei novæ Jerusalem, quæ descendit de cælo a Deo meo, et nomen meum novum.12 Anyone who proves victorious I wil make into a pillar in the sanctuary of my God, and it wil stay therefor ever; I wil inscribe on it the name of my God and the name of the city of my God, the new Jerusalem which is coming down from my God in heaven, and my own new name as wel .
Qui habet aurem, audiat quid Spiritus dicat ecclesiis.
Let anyone who can hear, listen to what the Spirit is saying to the churches."
Et angelo Laodiciæ ecclesiæ scribe : Hæc dicit : Amen, testis fidelis et verus, qui est principium creaturæ Dei.14 'Write to the angel of the church in Laodicea and say, "Here is the message of the Amen, thetrustworthy, the true witness, the Principle of God's creation:
Scio opera tua : quia neque frigidus es, neque calidus : utinam frigidus esses, aut calidus :15 I know about your activities: how you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were one or the other,
sed quia tepidus es, et nec frigidus, nec calidus, incipiam te evomere ex ore meo :16 but since you are neither hot nor cold, but only lukewarm, I will spit you out of my mouth.
quia dicis : Quod dives sum, et locupletatus, et nullius egeo : et nescis quia tu es miser, et miserabilis, et pauper, et cæcus, et nudus.17 You say to yourself: I am rich, I have made a fortune and have everything I want, never realising thatyou are wretchedly and pitiably poor, and blind and naked too.
Suadeo tibi emere a me aurum ignitum probatum, ut locuples fias, et vestimentis albis induaris, et non appareat confusio nuditatis tuæ, et collyrio inunge oculos tuos ut videas.18 I warn you, buy from me the gold that has been tested in the fire to make you truly rich, and whiterobes to clothe you and hide your shameful nakedness, and ointment to put on your eyes to enable you to see.
Ego quos amo, arguo, et castigo. Æmulare ergo, et p?nitentiam age.19 I reprove and train those whom I love: so repent in real earnest.
Ecce sto ad ostium, et pulso : si quis audierit vocem meam, et aperuerit mihi januam, intrabo ad illum, et c?nabo cum illo, et ipse mecum.20 Look, I am standing at the door, knocking. If one of you hears me cal ing and opens the door, I wilcome in to share a meal at that person's side.
Qui vicerit, dabo ei sedere mecum in throno meo : sicut et ego vici, et sedi cum Patre meo in throno ejus.21 Anyone who proves victorious I wil al ow to share my throne, just as I have myself overcome andhave taken my seat with my Father on his throne.
Qui habet aurem, audiat quid Spiritus dicat ecclesiis.22 Let anyone who can hear, listen to what the Spirit is saying to the churches." '
