Apocalypsis 18

VULGATA	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Et post hæc vidi alium angelum descendentem de cælo, habentem potestatem magnam : et terra illuminata est a gloria ejus.	1 After this, I saw another angel come down from heaven, with great authority given to him; the earthshone with his glory.
2 Et exclamavit in fortitudine, dicens : Cecidit, cecidit Babylon magna : et facta est habitatio dæmoniorum, et custodia omnis spiritus immundi, et custodia omnis volucris immundæ, et odibilis :	2 At the top of his voice he shouted, 'Babylon has fal en, Babylon the Great has fallen, and has becomethe haunt of devils and a lodging for every foul spirit and dirty, loathsome bird.
3 quia de vino iræ fornicationis ejus biberunt omnes gentes : et reges terræ cum illa fornicati sunt : et mercatores terræ de virtute deliciarum ejus divites facti sunt.	3 Al the nations have drunk deep of the wine of her prostitution; every king on the earth has prostitutedhimself with her, and every merchant grown rich through her debauchery.'
4 Et audivi aliam vocem de cælo, dicentem : Exite de illa populus meus : ut ne participes sitis delictorum ejus, et de plagis ejus non accipiatis.	4 Another voice spoke from heaven; I heard it say, 'Come out, my people, away from her, so that you donot share in her crimes and have the same plagues to bear.
5 Quoniam pervenerunt peccata ejus usque ad cælum, et recordatus est Dominus iniquitatum ejus.	5 Her sins have reached up to the sky, and God has her crimes in mind: treat her as she has treatedothers.
6 Reddite illi sicut et ipsa reddidit vobis : et duplicate duplicia secundum opera ejus : in poculo, quo miscuit, miscete illi duplum.	6 She must be paid double the amount she exacted. She is to have a doubly strong cup of her ownmixture.
7 Quantum glorificavit se, et in deliciis fuit, tantum date illi tormentum et luctum : quia in corde suo dicit : Sedeo regina : et vidua non sum, et luctum non videbo.	7 Every one of her pomps and orgies is to be matched by a torture or an agony. I am enthroned asqueen, she thinks; I am no widow and wil never know bereavement.
8 Ideo in una die venient plagæ ejus, mors, et luctus, et fames, et igne comburetur : quia fortis est Deus, qui judicabit illam.	8 For that, in one day, the plagues wil fal on her: disease and mourning and famine. She wil be burnedto the ground. The Lord God who has condemned her is mighty.'
9 Et flebunt, et plangent se super illam reges terræ, qui cum illa fornicati sunt, et in deliciis vixerunt, cum viderint fumum incendii ejus :	9 'There will be mourning and weeping for her by the kings of the earth who have prostituted themselveswith her and held orgies with her. They see the smoke as she burns,
10 longe stantes propter timorem tormentorum ejus, dicentes : Væ, væ civitas illa magna Babylon, civitas illa fortis : quoniam una hora venit judicium tuum.	10 while they keep at a safe distance through fear of her anguish. They wil say: Mourn, mourn for thisgreat city, Babylon, so powerful a city, in one short hour your doom has come upon you.
11 Et negotiatores terræ flebunt, et lugebunt super illam : quoniam merces eorum nemo emet amplius :	11 'There wil be weeping and distress over her among al the traders of the earth when no one is left tobuy their cargoes of goods;
12 merces auri, et argenti, et lapidis pretiosi, et margaritæ, et byssi, et purpuræ, et serici, et cocci (et omne lignum thyinum, et omnia vasa eboris, et omnia vasa de lapide pretioso, et æramento, et ferro, et marmore,	12 their stocks of gold and silver, jewels and pearls, linen and purple and silks and scarlet; al thesandalwood, every piece in ivory or fine wood, in bronze or iron or marble;
13 et cinnamomum) et odoramentorum, et unguenti, et thuris, et vini, et olei, et similæ, et tritici, et jumentorum, et ovium, et equorum, et rhedarum, et mancipiorum, et animarum hominum.	13 the cinnamon and spices, the myrrh and ointment and incense; wine, oil, flour and corn; their stocksof cattle, sheep, horses and chariots, their slaves and their human cargo.
14 Et poma desiderii animæ tuæ discesserunt a te, et omnia pinguia et præclara perierunt a te, et amplius illa jam non invenient.	14 'Al the fruits you had set your hearts on have failed you; gone for ever, never to return again, is yourlife of magnificence and ease.
15 Mercatores horum, qui divites facti sunt, ab ea longe stabunt propter timorem tormentorum ejus, flentes, ac lugentes,	15 'The traders who had made a fortune out of her wil be standing at a safe distance through fear of heranguish, mourning and weeping.
16 et dicentes : Væ, væ civitas illa magna, quæ amicta erat bysso, et purpura, et cocco, et deaurata erat auro, et lapide pretioso, et margaritis :	16 They wil be saying: Mourn, mourn for this great city; for al the linen and purple and scarlet that youwore, for al your finery of gold and jewels and pearls;
17 quoniam una hora destitutæ sunt tantæ divitiæ, et omnis gubernator, et omnis qui in lacum navigat, et nautæ, et qui in mari operantur, longe steterunt,	17 your huge riches are al destroyed within a single hour.' Al the captains and seafaring men, sailorsand all those who make a living from the sea kept a safe distance,
18 et clamaverunt videntes locum incendii ejus, dicentes : Quæ similis civitati huic magnæ ?	18 watching the smoke as she burned, and crying out, 'Has there ever been a city as great as this!'
19 et miserunt pulverem super capita sua, et clamaverunt flentes, et lugentes, dicentes : Væ, væ civitas illa magna, in qua divites facti sunt omnes, qui habebant naves in mari de pretiis ejus : quoniam una hora desolata est.	19 They threw dust on their heads and said, with tears and groans: 'Mourn, mourn for this great citywhose lavish living has made a fortune for every owner of a sea-going ship, ruined within a single hour.
20 Exsulta super eam cælum, et sancti apostoli, et prophetæ : quoniam judicavit Deus judicium vestrum de illa.	20 'Now heaven, celebrate her downfall, and all you saints, apostles and prophets: God has givenjudgement for you against her.'
21 Et sustulit unus angelus fortis lapidem quasi molarem magnum, et misit in mare, dicens : Hoc impetu mittetur Babylon civitas illa magna, et ultra jam non invenietur.	21 Then a powerful angel picked up a boulder like a great mil stone, and as he hurled it into the sea, hesaid, 'That is how the great city of Babylon is going to be hurled down, never to be seen again.
22 Et vox cithar?dorum, et musicorum, et tibia canentium, et tuba non audietur in te amplius : et omnis artifex omnis artis non invenietur in te amplius : et vox molæ non audietur in te amplius :	22 Never again in you will be heard the song of harpists and minstrels, the music of flute and trumpet;never again wil craftsmen of every skill be found in you or the sound of the handmil be heard;
23 et lux lucernæ non lucebit in te amplius : et vox sponsi et sponsæ non audietur adhuc in te : quia mercatores tui erant principes terræ, quia in veneficiis tuis erraverunt omnes gentes.	23 never again wil shine the light of the lamp in you, never again wil be heard in you the voices ofbridegroom and bride. Your traders were the princes of the earth, al the nations were led astray by your sorcery.
24 Et in ea sanguis prophetarum et sanctorum inventus est : et omnium qui interfecti sunt in terra.	24 In her was found the blood of prophets and saints, and all the blood that was ever shed on earth.'
