VULGATANEW JERUSALEM
Et audivi vocem magnam de templo, dicentem septem angelis : Ite, et effundite septem phialas iræ Dei in terram.1 Then I heard a loud voice from the sanctuary cal ing to the seven angels, 'Go, and empty the sevenbowls of God's anger over the earth.'
Et abiit primus, et effudit phialam suam in terram, et factum est vulnus sævum et pessimum in homines, qui habebant caracterem bestiæ, et in eos qui adoraverunt imaginem ejus.2 The first angel went and emptied his bowl over the earth; at once, on al the people who had beenbranded with the mark of the beast and had worshipped its statue, there came disgusting and virulent sores.
Et secundus angelus effudit phialam suam in mare, et factus est sanguis tamquam mortui : et omnis anima vivens mortua est in mari.3 The second angel emptied his bowl over the sea, and it turned to blood, like the blood of a corpse, andevery living creature in the sea died.
Et tertius effudit phialam suam super flumina, et super fontes aquarum, et factus est sanguis.4 The third angel emptied his bowl into the rivers and springs of water and they turned into blood.
Et audivi angelum aquarum dicentem : Justus es, Domine, qui es, et qui eras sanctus, qui hæc judicasti :5 Then I heard the angel of water say, 'You are the Upright One, He who is, He who was, the Holy One,for giving this verdict:
quia sanguinem sanctorum et prophetarum effuderunt, et sanguinem eis dedisti bibere : digni enim sunt.6 they spilt the blood of the saints and the prophets, and blood is what you have given them to drink; it iswhat they deserve.'
Et audivi alterum ab altari dicentem : Etiam Domine Deus omnipotens, vera et justa judicia tua.7 And I heard the altar itself say, 'Truly, Lord God Almighty, the punishments you give are true and just.'
Et quartus angelus effudit phialam suam in solem, et datum est illi æstu affligere homines, et igni :8 The fourth angel emptied his bowl over the sun and it was made to scorch people with its flames;
et æstuaverunt homines æstu magno, et blasphemaverunt nomen Dei habentis potestatem super has plagas, neque egerunt p?nitentiam ut darent illi gloriam.9 but though people were scorched by the fierce heat of it, they cursed the name of God who had thepower to cause such plagues, and they would not repent and glorify him.
Et quintus angelus effudit phialam suam super sedem bestiæ : et factum est regnum ejus tenebrosum, et commanducaverunt linguas suas præ dolore :10 The fifth angel emptied his bowl over the throne of the beast and its whole empire was plunged intodarkness. People were biting their tongues for pain,
et blasphemaverunt Deum cæli præ doloribus, et vulneribus suis, et non egerunt p?nitentiam ex operibus suis.11 but instead of repenting for what they had done, they cursed the God of heaven because of theirpains and sores.
Et sextus angelus effudit phialam suam in flumen illud magnum Euphraten : et siccavit aquam ejus, ut præpararetur via regibus ab ortu solis.12 The sixth angel emptied his bowl over the great river Euphrates; al the water dried up so that a waywas made for the kings of the East to come in.
Et vidi de ore draconis, et de ore bestiæ, et de ore pseudoprophetæ spiritus tres immundos in modum ranarum.13 Then from the jaws of dragon and beast and false prophet I saw three foul spirits come; they lookedlike frogs
Sunt enim spiritus dæmoniorum facientes signa, et procedunt ad reges totius terræ congregare illos in prælium ad diem magnum omnipotentis Dei.14 and in fact were demon spirits, able to work miracles, going out to al the kings of the world to callthem together for the war of the Great Day of God the Almighty.-
Ecce venio sicut fur. Beatus qui vigilat, et custodit vestimenta sua, ne nudus ambulet, et videant turpitudinem ejus.15 Look, I shall come like a thief. Blessed is anyone who has kept watch, and has kept his clothes on,so that he does not go out naked and expose his shame.-
Et congregabit illos in locum qui vocatur hebraice Armagedon.16 They cal ed the kings together at the place cal ed, in Hebrew, Armageddon.
Et septimus angelus effudit phialam suam in aërem, et exivit vox magna de templo a throno, dicens : Factum est.17 The seventh angel emptied his bowl into the air, and a great voice boomed out from the sanctuary,'The end has come.'
Et facta sunt fulgura, et voces, et tonitrua, et terræmotus factus est magnus, qualis numquam fuit ex quo homines fuerunt super terram : talis terræmotus, sic magnus.18 Then there were flashes of lightning and peals of thunder and a violent earthquake, unparalleledsince humanity first came into existence.
Et facta est civitas magna in tres partes : et civitates gentium ceciderunt. Et Babylon magna venit in memoriam ante Deum, dare illi calicem vini indignationis iræ ejus.19 The Great City was split into three parts and the cities of the world col apsed; Babylon the Great wasnot forgotten: God made her drink the ful winecup of his retribution.
Et omnis insula fugit, et montes non sunt inventi.20 Every island vanished and the mountains disappeared;
Et grando magna sicut talentum descendit de cælo in homines : et blasphemaverunt Deum homines propter plagam grandinis : quoniam magna facta est vehementer.21 and hail, with great hailstones weighing a talent each, fel from the sky on the people. They cursedGod for sending a plague of hail; it was the most terrible plague.
