Seniores ergo, qui in vobis sunt, obsecro, consenior et testis Christi passionum : qui et ejus, quæ in futuro revelanda est, gloriæ communicator : | 1 I urge the elders among you, as a fellow-elder myself and a witness to the sufferings of Christ, and asone who is to have a share in the glory that is to be revealed: |
pascite qui in vobis est gregem Dei, providentes non coacte, sed spontanee secundum Deum : neque turpis lucri gratia, sed voluntarie : | 2 give a shepherd's care to the flock of God that is entrusted to you: watch over it, not simply as a dutybut gladly, as God wants; not for sordid money, but because you are eager to do it. |
neque ut dominantes in cleris, sed forma facti gregis ex animo. | 3 Do not lord it over the group which is in your charge, but be an example for the flock. |
Et cum apparuerit princeps pastorum, percipietis immarcescibilem gloriæ coronam. | 4 When the chief shepherd appears, you wil be given the unfading crown of glory. |
Similiter adolescentes subditi estote senioribus. Omnes autem invicem humilitatem insinuate, quia Deus superbis resistit, humilibus autem dat gratiam. | 5 In the same way, younger people, be subject to the elders. Humility towards one another must be thegarment you all wear constantly, because God opposes the proud but accords his favour to the humble. |
Humiliamini igitur sub potenti manu Dei, ut vos exaltet in tempore visitationis : | 6 Bow down, then, before the power of God now, so that he may raise you up in due time; |
omnem sollicitudinem vestram projicientes in eum, quoniam ipsi cura est de vobis. | 7 unload al your burden on to him, since he is concerned about you. |
Sobrii estote, et vigilate : quia adversarius vester diabolus tamquam leo rugiens circuit, quærens quem devoret : | 8 Keep sober and alert, because your enemy the devil is on the prowl like a roaring lion, looking forsomeone to devour. |
cui resistite fortes in fide : scientes eamdem passionem ei quæ in mundo est vestræ fraternitati fieri. | 9 Stand up to him, strong in faith and in the knowledge that it is the same kind of suffering that thecommunity of your brothers throughout the world is undergoing. |
Deus autem omnis gratiæ, qui vocavit nos in æternam suam gloriam in Christo Jesu, modicum passos ipse perficiet, confirmabit, solidabitque. | 10 You wil have to suffer only for a little while: the God of all grace who called you to eternal glory inChrist wil restore you, he wil confirm, strengthen and support you. |
Ipsi gloria, et imperium in sæcula sæculorum. Amen. | 11 His power lasts for ever and ever. Amen. |
Per Silvanum fidelem fratrem vobis, ut arbitror, breviter scripsi : obsecrans et contestans, hanc esse veram gratiam Dei, in qua statis. | 12 I write these few words to you through Silvanus, who is a trustworthy brother, to encourage you andattest that this is the true grace of God. Stand firm in it! |
Salutat vos ecclesia quæ est in Babylone coëlecta, et Marcus filius meus. | 13 Your sister in Babylon, who is with you among the chosen, sends you greetings; so does my son,Mark. |
Salutate invicem in osculo sancto. Gratia vobis omnibus qui estis in Christo Jesu. Amen. | 14 Greet one another with a kiss of love. Peace to you al who are in Christ. |
