VULGATANEW JERUSALEM
Capitulum autem super ea quæ dicuntur : Talem habemus pontificem, qui consedit in dextera sedis magnitudinis in cælis,1 The principal point of al that we have said is that we have a high priest of exactly this kind. He hastaken his seat at the right of the throne of divine Majesty in the heavens,
sanctorum minister, et tabernaculi veri, quod fixit Dominus, et non homo.2 and he is the minister of the sanctuary and of the true Tent which the Lord, and not any man, set up.
Omnis enim pontifex ad offerendum munera, et hostias constituitur : unde necesse est et hunc habere aliquid, quod offerat.3 Every high priest is constituted to offer gifts and sacrifices, and so this one too must have something tooffer.
Si ergo esset super terram, nec esset sacerdos : cum essent qui offerent secundum legem munera,4 In fact, if he were on earth, he would not be a priest at al , since there are others who make theofferings laid down by the Law,
qui exemplari, et umbræ deserviunt cælestium. Sicut responsum est Moysi, cum consummaret tabernaculum : Vide (inquit) omnia facito secundum exemplar, quod tibi ostensum est in monte.5 though these maintain the service only of a model or a reflection of the heavenly realities; just asMoses, when he had the Tent to build, was warned by God who said: See that you work to the design that wasshown you on the mountain.
Nunc autem melius sortitus est ministerium, quanto et melioris testamenti mediator est, quod in melioribus repromissionibus sancitum est.6 As it is, he has been given a ministry as far superior as is the covenant of which he is the mediator, which is founded on better promises.
Nam si illud prius culpa vacasset, non utique secundi locus inquireretur.7 If that first covenant had been faultless, there would have been no room for a second one to replace it.
Vituperans enim eos dicit : Ecce dies venient, dicit Dominus : et consummabo super domum Israël, et super domum Juda, testamentum novum,8 And in fact God does find fault with them; he says: Look, the days are coming, the Lord declares, whenI will make a new covenant with the House of Israel and the House of Judah,
non secundum testamentum quod feci patribus eorum in die qua apprehendi manum eorum ut educerem illos de terra Ægypti : quoniam ipsi non permanserunt in testamento meo : et ego neglexi eos, dicit Dominus.9 but not a covenant like the one I made with their ancestors, the day I took them by the hand to bringthem out of Egypt, which covenant of mine they broke, and I too abandoned them, the Lord declares.
Quia hoc est testamentum quod disponam domui Israël post dies illos, dicit Dominus : dando leges meas in mentem eorum, et in corde eorum superscribam eas : et ero eis in Deum, et ipsi erunt mihi in populum :10 No, this is the covenant I wil make with the House of Israel, when those days have come, the Lorddeclares: In their minds I shal plant my laws writing them on their hearts. Then I shall be their God, and theyshall be my people.
et non docebit unusquisque proximum suum, et unusquisque fratrem suum, dicens : Cognosce Dominum : quoniam omnes scient me a minore usque ad majorem eorum :11 There wil be no further need for each to teach his neighbour, and each his brother, saying 'Learn toknow the Lord!' No, they will al know me, from the least to the greatest,
quia propitius ero iniquitatibus eorum, et peccatorum eorum jam non memorabor.12 since I shall forgive their guilt and never more call their sins to mind.
Dicendo autem novum : veteravit prius. Quod autem antiquatur, et senescit, prope interitum est.13 By speaking of a new covenant, he implies that the first one is old. And anything old and ageing isready to disappear.
