Paulus, et Sylvanus, et Timotheus, ecclesiæ Thessalonicensium in Deo Patre nostro, et Domino Jesu Christo.
Gratia vobis, et pax a Deo Patre nostro, et Domino Jesu Christo.
Grace to you and peace from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
Gratias agere debemus semper Deo pro vobis, fratres, ita ut dignum est, quoniam supercrescit fides vestra, et abundat caritas uniuscujusque vestrum in invicem :3 We must always thank God for you, brothers; quite rightly, because your faith is growing so wonderfullyand the mutual love that each one of you has for al never stops increasing.
ita ut et nos ipsi in vobis gloriemur in ecclesiis Dei, pro patientia vestra, et fide, et in omnibus persecutionibus vestris, et tribulationibus, quas sustinetis4 Among the churches of God we take special pride in you for your perseverance and faith under al thepersecutions and hardships you have to bear.
in exemplum justi judicii Dei, ut digni habeamini in regno Dei, pro quo et patimini.5 It al shows that God's judgement is just, so that you may be found worthy of the kingdom of God; it isfor the sake of this that you are suffering now.
Si tamen justum est apud Deum retribuere tribulationem iis qui vos tribulant :6 For God's justice wil surely mean hardship being inflicted on those who are now inflicting hardship onyou,
et vobis, qui tribulamini, requiem nobiscum in revelatione Domini Jesu de cælo cum angelis virtutis ejus,7 and for you who are now suffering hardship, relief with us, when the Lord Jesus appears from heavenwith the angels of his power.
in flamma ignis dantis vindictam iis qui non noverunt Deum, et qui non obediunt Evangelio Domini nostri Jesu Christi,8 He wil come amid flaming fire; he wil impose a penalty on those who do not acknowledge God andrefuse to accept the gospel of our Lord Jesus.
qui pœnas dabunt in interitu æternas a facie Domini, et a gloria virtutis ejus :9 Their punishment is to be lost eternal y, excluded from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of his strength
cum venerit glorificari in sanctis suis, et admirabilis fieri in omnibus, qui crediderunt, quia creditum est testimonium nostrum super vos in die illo.10 on that day when he comes to be glorified among his holy ones and marvelled at by al who believe inhim; and you are among those who believed our witness.
In quo etiam oramus semper pro vobis : ut dignetur vos vocatione sua Deus noster, et impleat omnem voluntatem bonitatis, et opus fidei in virtute,11 In view of this we also pray continual y that our God wil make you worthy of his cal , and by his powerfulfil all your desires for goodness, and complete al that you have been doing through faith;
ut clarificetur nomen Domini nostri Jesu Christi in vobis, et vos in illo secundum gratiam Dei nostri, et Domini Jesu Christi.12 so that the name of our Lord Jesus Christ may be glorified in you and you in him, by the grace of ourGod and the Lord Jesus Christ.
