Ad Corinthios I 2

1 Et ego, cum venissem ad vos, fratres, veni non in sublimitate sermonis, aut sapientiæ, annuntians vobis testimonium Christi.1 Now when I came to you, brothers, I did not come with any brilliance of oratory or wise argument toannounce to you the mystery of God.
2 Non enim judicavi me scire aliquid inter vos, nisi Jesum Christum, et hunc crucifixum.2 I was resolved that the only knowledge I would have while I was with you was knowledge of Jesus, andof him as the crucified Christ.
3 Et ego in infirmitate, et timore, et tremore multo fui apud vos :3 I came among you in weakness, in fear and great trembling
4 et sermo meus, et prædicatio mea non in persuasibilibus humanæ sapientiæ verbis, sed in ostensione spiritus et virtutis :4 and what I spoke and proclaimed was not meant to convince by philosophical argument, but todemonstrate the convincing power of the Spirit,
5 ut fides vestra non sit in sapientia hominum, sed in virtute Dei.
5 so that your faith should depend not on human wisdom but on the power of God.
6 Sapientiam autem loquimur inter perfectos : sapientiam vero non hujus sæculi, neque principum hujus sæculi, qui destruuntur :6 But stil , to those who have reached maturity, we do talk of a wisdom, not, it is true, a philosophy of thisage or of the rulers of this age, who will not last long now.
7 sed loquimur Dei sapientiam in mysterio, quæ abscondita est, quam prædestinavit Deus ante sæcula in gloriam nostram,7 It is of the mysterious wisdom of God that we talk, the wisdom that was hidden, which God predestinedto be for our glory before the ages began.
8 quam nemo principum hujus sæculi cognovit : si enim cognovissent, numquam Dominum gloriæ crucifixissent.8 None of the rulers of the age recognised it; for if they had recognised it, they would not have crucifiedthe Lord of glory;
9 Sed sicut scriptum est : Quod oculus non vidit, nec auris audivit, nec in cor hominis ascendit, quæ præparavit Deus iis qui diligunt illum :9 but it is as scripture says: What no eye has seen and no ear has heard, what the mind of man cannotvisualise; al that God has prepared for those who love him;
10 nobis autem revelavit Deus per Spiritum suum : Spiritus enim omnia scrutatur, etiam profunda Dei.10 to us, though, God has given revelation through the Spirit, for the Spirit explores the depths ofeverything, even the depths of God.
11 Quis enim hominum scit quæ sunt hominis, nisi spiritus hominis, qui in ipso est ? ita et quæ Dei sunt, nemo cognovit, nisi Spiritus Dei.11 After al , is there anyone who knows the qualities of anyone except his own spirit, within him; and inthe same way, nobody knows the qualities of God except the Spirit of God.
12 Nos autem non spiritum hujus mundi accepimus, sed Spiritum qui ex Deo est, ut sciamus quæ a Deo donata sunt nobis :12 Now, the Spirit we have received is not the spirit of the world but God's own Spirit, so that we mayunderstand the lavish gifts God has given us.
13 quæ et loquimur non in doctis humanæ sapientiæ verbis, sed in doctrina Spiritus, spiritualibus spiritualia comparantes.13 And these are what we speak of, not in the terms learnt from human philosophy, but in terms learntfrom the Spirit, fitting spiritual language to spiritual things.
14 Animalis autem homo non percipit ea quæ sunt Spiritus Dei : stultitia enim est illi, et non potest intelligere : quia spiritualiter examinatur.14 The natural person has no room for the gifts of God's Spirit; to him they are folly; he cannot recognisethem, because their value can be assessed only in the Spirit.
15 Spiritualis autem judicat omnia : et ipse a nemine judicatur.15 The spiritual person, on the other hand, can assess the value of everything, and that person's valuecannot be assessed by anybody else.
16 Quis enim cognovit sensum Domini, qui instruat eum ? nos autem sensum Christi habemus.16 For: who has ever known the mind of the Lord? Who has ever been his adviser? But we are thosewho have the mind of Christ.
