VULGATANEW JERUSALEM
1 Nihil ergo nunc damnationis est iis qui sunt in Christo Jesu : qui non secundum carnem ambulant.1 Thus, condemnation wil never come to those who are in Christ Jesus,
2 Lex enim spiritus vitæ in Christo Jesu liberavit me a lege peccati et mortis.2 because the law of the Spirit which gives life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin anddeath.
3 Nam quod impossibile erat legi, in quo infirmabatur per carnem : Deus Filium suum mittens in similitudinem carnis peccati et de peccato, damnavit peccatum in carne,3 What the Law could not do because of the weakness of human nature, God did, sending his own Sonin the same human nature as any sinner to be a sacrifice for sin, and condemning sin in that human nature.
4 ut justificatio legis impleretur in nobis, qui non secundum carnem ambulamus, sed secundum spiritum.4 This was so that the Law's requirements might be fully satisfied in us as we direct our lives not by ournatural inclinations but by the Spirit.
5 Qui enim secundum carnem sunt, quæ carnis sunt, sapiunt : qui vero secundum spiritum sunt, quæ sunt spiritus, sentiunt.5 Those who are living by their natural inclinations have their minds on the things human nature desires;those who live in the Spirit have their minds on spiritual things.
6 Nam prudentia carnis, mors est : prudentia autem spiritus, vita et pax :6 And human nature has nothing to look forward to but death, while the Spirit looks forward to life andpeace,
7 quoniam sapientia carnis inimica est Deo : legi enim Dei non est subjecta, nec enim potest.7 because the outlook of disordered human nature is opposed to God, since it does not submit to God'sLaw, and indeed it cannot,
8 Qui autem in carne sunt, Deo placere non possunt.8 and those who live by their natural inclinations can never be pleasing to God.
9 Vos autem in carne non estis, sed in spiritu : si tamen Spiritus Dei habitat in vobis. Si quis autem Spiritum Christi non habet, hic non est ejus.9 You, however, live not by your natural inclinations, but by the Spirit, since the Spirit of God has made ahome in you. Indeed, anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him.
10 Si autem Christus in vobis est, corpus quidem mortuum est propter peccatum, spiritus vero vivit propter justificationem.10 But when Christ is in you, the body is dead because of sin but the spirit is alive because you havebeen justified;
11 Quod si Spiritus ejus, qui suscitavit Jesum a mortuis, habitat in vobis : qui suscitavit Jesum Christum a mortuis, vivificabit et mortalia corpora vestra, propter inhabitantem Spiritum ejus in vobis.11 and if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead has made his home in you, then he whoraised Christ Jesus from the dead wil give life to your own mortal bodies through his Spirit living in you.
12 Ergo fratres, debitores sumus non carni, ut secundum carnem vivamus.12 So then, my brothers, we have no obligation to human nature to be dominated by it.
13 Si enim secundum carnem vixeritis, moriemini : si autem spiritu facta carnis mortificaveritis, vivetis.
13 If you do live in that way, you are doomed to die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the habitsoriginating in the body, you will have life.
14 Quicumque enim Spiritu Dei aguntur, ii sunt filii Dei.14 Al who are guided by the Spirit of God are sons of God;
15 Non enim accepistis spiritum servitutis iterum in timore, sed accepistis spiritum adoptionis filiorum, in quo clamamus : Abba (Pater).15 for what you received was not the spirit of slavery to bring you back into fear; you received the Spiritof adoption, enabling us to cry out, 'Abba, Father!'
16 Ipse enim Spiritus testimonium reddit spiritui nostro quod sumus filii Dei.16 The Spirit himself joins with our spirit to bear witness that we are children of God.
17 Si autem filii, et hæredes : hæredes, quidem Dei, cohæredes autem Christi : si tamen compatimur ut et conglorificemur.
17 And if we are children, then we are heirs, heirs of God and joint-heirs with Christ, provided that weshare his suffering, so as to share his glory.
18 Existimo enim quod non sunt condignæ passiones hujus temporis ad futuram gloriam, quæ revelabitur in nobis.18 In my estimation, al that we suffer in the present time is nothing in comparison with the glory which isdestined to be disclosed for us,
19 Nam exspectatio creaturæ revelationem filiorum Dei exspectat.19 for the whole creation is waiting with eagerness for the children of God to be revealed.
20 Vanitati enim creatura subjecta est non volens, sed propter eum, qui subjecit eam in spe :20 It was not for its own purposes that creation had frustration imposed on it, but for the purposes of himwho imposed it-
21 quia et ipsa creatura liberabitur a servitute corruptionis in libertatem gloriæ filiorum Dei.21 with the intention that the whole creation itself might be freed from its slavery to corruption andbrought into the same glorious freedom as the children of God.
22 Scimus enim quod omnis creatura ingemiscit, et parturit usque adhuc.22 We are wel aware that the whole creation, until this time, has been groaning in labour pains.
23 Non solum autem illa, sed et nos ipsi primitias spiritus habentes : et ipsi intra nos gemimus adoptionem filiorum Dei exspectantes, redemptionem corporis nostri.23 And not only that: we too, who have the first-fruits of the Spirit, even we are groaning insideourselves, waiting with eagerness for our bodies to be set free.
24 Spe enim salvi facti sumus. Spes autem, quæ videtur, non est spes : nam quod videt quis, quid sperat ?24 In hope, we already have salvation; in hope, not visibly present, or we should not be hoping -- nobodygoes on hoping for something which is already visible.
25 Si autem quod non videmus, speramus : per patientiam exspectamus.
25 But having this hope for what we cannot yet see, we are able to wait for it with perseveringconfidence.
26 Similiter autem et Spiritus adjuvat infirmitatem nostram : nam quid oremus, sicut oportet, nescimus : sed ipse Spiritus postulat pro nobis gemitibus inenarrabilibus.26 And as wel as this, the Spirit too comes to help us in our weakness, for, when we do not know how topray properly, then the Spirit personal y makes our petitions for us in groans that cannot be put into words;
27 Qui autem scrutatur corda, scit quid desideret Spiritus : quia secundum Deum postulat pro sanctis.
27 and he who can see into al hearts knows what the Spirit means because the prayers that the Spiritmakes for God's holy people are always in accordance with the mind of God.
28 Scimus autem quoniam diligentibus Deum omnia cooperantur in bonum, iis qui secundum propositum vocati sunt sancti.28 We are wel aware that God works with those who love him, those who have been cal ed inaccordance with his purpose, and turns everything to their good.
29 Nam quos præscivit, et prædestinavit conformes fieri imaginis Filii sui, ut sit ipse primogenitus in multis fratribus.29 He decided beforehand who were the ones destined to be moulded to the pattern of his Son, so thathe should be the eldest of many brothers;
30 Quos autem prædestinavit, hos et vocavit : et quos vocavit, hos et justificavit : quos autem justificavit, illos et glorificavit.30 it was those so destined that he cal ed; those that he cal ed, he justified, and those that he hasjustified he has brought into glory.
31 Quid ergo dicemus ad hæc ? si Deus pro nobis, quis contra nos ?31 After saying this, what can we add? If God is for us, who can be against us?
32 Qui etiam proprio Filio suo non pepercit, sed pro nobis omnibus tradidit illum : quomodo non etiam cum illo omnia nobis donavit ?32 Since he did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for the sake of all of us, then can we not expectthat with him he wil freely give us al his gifts?
33 Quis accusabit adversus electos Dei ? Deus qui justificat,33 Who can bring any accusation against those that God has chosen? When God grants saving justice
34 quis est qui condemnet ? Christus Jesus, qui mortuus est, immo qui et resurrexit, qui est ad dexteram Dei, qui etiam interpellat pro nobis.34 who can condemn? Are we not sure that it is Christ Jesus, who died -- yes and more, who was raised from the dead and is at God's right hand -- and who is adding his plea for us?
35 Quis ergo nos separabit a caritate Christi ? tribulatio ? an angustia ? an fames ? an nuditas ? an periculum ? an persecutio ? an gladius ?35 Can anything cut us off from the love of Christ -- can hardships or distress, or persecution, or lack offood and clothing, or threats or violence;
36 (Sicut scriptum est : Quia propter te mortificamur tota die :
æstimati sumus sicut oves occisionis.)
36 as scripture says: For your sake we are being massacred al day long, treated as sheep to beslaughtered?
37 Sed in his omnibus superamus propter eum qui dilexit nos.37 No; we come through al these things triumphantly victorious, by the power of him who loved us.
38 Certus sum enim quia neque mors, neque vita, neque angeli, neque principatus, neque virtutes, neque instantia, neque futura, neque fortitudo,38 For I am certain of this: neither death nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nothing already inexistence and nothing stil to come, nor any power,
39 neque altitudo, neque profundum, neque creatura alia poterit nos separare a caritate Dei, quæ est in Christo Jesu Domino nostro.39 nor the heights nor the depths, nor any created thing whatever, wil be able to come between us andthe love of God, known to us in Christ Jesus our Lord.
