VULGATANEW JERUSALEM
Justificati ergo ex fide, pacem habeamus ad Deum per Dominum nostrum Jesum Christum :1 So then, now that we have been justified by faith, we are at peace with God through our Lord JesusChrist;
per quem et habemus accessum per fidem in gratiam istam, in qua stamus, et gloriamur in spe gloriæ filiorum Dei.2 it is through him, by faith, that we have been admitted into God's favour in which we are living, andlook forward exultantly to God's glory.
Not only that; let us exult, too, in our hardships, understanding that hardship develops perseverance,
patientia autem probationem, probatio vero spem,4 and perseverance develops a tested character, something that gives us hope,
spes autem non confundit : quia caritas Dei diffusa est in cordibus nostris per Spiritum Sanctum, qui datus est nobis.5 and a hope which will not let us down, because the love of God has been poured into our hearts by theHoly Spirit which has been given to us.
Ut quid enim Christus, cum adhuc infirmi essemus, secundum tempus, pro impiis mortuus est ?6 When we were stil helpless, at the appointed time, Christ died for the godless.
vix enim pro justo quis moritur : nam pro bono forsitan quis audeat mori.7 You could hardly find anyone ready to die even for someone upright; though it is just possible that, fora real y good person, someone might undertake to die.
Commendat autem caritatem suam Deus in nobis : quoniam cum adhuc peccatores essemus, secundum tempus,8 So it is proof of God's own love for us, that Christ died for us while we were stil sinners.
Christus pro nobis mortuus est : multo igitur magis nunc justificati in sanguine ipsius, salvi erimus ab ira per ipsum.9 How much more can we be sure, therefore, that, now that we have been justified by his death, we shalbe saved through him from the retribution of God.
Si enim cum inimici essemus, reconciliati sumus Deo per mortem filii ejus : multo magis reconciliati, salvi erimus in vita ipsius.10 For if, while we were enemies, we were reconciled to God through the death of his Son, how muchmore can we be sure that, being now reconciled, we shal be saved by his life.
What is more, we are filled with exultant trust in God, through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whomwe have already gained our reconciliation.
Propterea sicut per unum hominem peccatum in hunc mundum intravit, et per peccatum mors, et ita in omnes homines mors pertransiit, in quo omnes peccaverunt.12 Wel then; it was through one man that sin came into the world, and through sin death, and thus deathhas spread through the whole human race because everyone has sinned.
Usque ad legem enim peccatum erat in mundo : peccatum autem non imputabatur, cum lex non esset.13 Sin already existed in the world before there was any law, even though sin is not reckoned whenthere is no law.
Sed regnavit mors ab Adam usque ad Moysen etiam in eos qui non peccaverunt in similitudinem prævaricationis Adæ, qui est forma futuri.14 Nonetheless death reigned over al from Adam to Moses, even over those whose sin was not thebreaking of a commandment, as Adam's was. He prefigured the One who was to come . . .
There is no comparison between the free gift and the offence. If death came to many through theoffence of one man, how much greater an effect the grace of God has had, coming to so many and so plentiful yas a free gift through the one man Jesus Christ!
Nam judicium quidem ex uno in condemnationem : gratia autem ex multis delictis in justificationem.16 Again, there is no comparison between the gift and the offence of one man. One single offencebrought condemnation, but now, after many offences, have come the free gift and so acquittal!
Si enim unius delicto mors regnavit per unum : multo magis abundantiam gratiæ, et donationis, et justitiæ accipientes, in vita regnabunt per unum Jesum Christum.17 It was by one man's offence that death came to reign over all, but how much greater the reign in lifeof those who receive the ful ness of grace and the gift of saving justice, through the one man, Jesus Christ.
Igitur sicut per unius delictum in omnes homines in condemnationem : sic et per unius justitiam in omnes homines in justificationem vitæ.18 One man's offence brought condemnation on al humanity; and one man's good act has broughtjustification and life to all humanity.
Just as by one man's disobedience many were made sinners, so by one man's obedience are manyto be made upright.
Lex autem subintravit ut abundaret delictum. Ubi autem abundavit delictum, superabundavit gratia :20 When law came on the scene, it was to multiply the offences. But however much sin increased, gracewas always greater;
ut sicut regnavit peccatum in mortem : ita et gratia regnet per justitiam in vitam æternam, per Jesum Christum Dominum nostrum.21 so that as sin's reign brought death, so grace was to rule through saving justice that leads to eternallife through Jesus Christ our Lord.
