Actus Apostolorum 14

VULGATA	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Factum est autem Iconii, ut simul introirent in synagogam Judæorum, et loquerentur, ita ut crederet Judæorum et Græcorum copiosa multitudo.	1 It happened that at Iconium they went to the Jewish synagogue, in the same way, and they spoke soeffectively that a great many Jews and Greeks became believers.
2 Qui vero increduli fuerunt Judæi, suscitaverunt et ad iracundiam concitaverunt animas gentium adversus fratres.	2 (However, the Jews who refused to believe stirred up the gentiles against the brothers and set them inopposition.)
3 Multo igitur tempore demorati sunt, fiducialiter agentes in Domino, testimonium perhibente verbo gratiæ suæ, dante signa et prodigia fieri per manus eorum.	3 Accordingly Paul and Barnabas stayed on for some time, preaching fearlessly in the Lord; and heattested al they said about his gift of grace, al owing signs and wonders to be performed by them.
4 Divisa est autem multitudo civitatis : et quidam quidem erant cum Judæis, quidam vero cum Apostolis.	4 The people in the city were divided; some supported the Jews, others the apostles,
5 Cum autem factus esset impetus gentilium et Judæorum cum principibus suis, ut contumeliis afficerent, et lapidarent eos,	5 but eventual y with the connivance of the authorities a move was made by gentiles as well as Jews tomake attacks on them and to stone them.
6 intelligentes confugerunt ad civitates Lycaoniæ Lystram et Derben, et universam in circuitu regionem, et ibi evangelizantes erant.	6 When they came to hear of this, they went off for safety to Lycaonia where, in the towns of Lystra andDerbe and in the surrounding country,
7 Et quidam vir Lystris infirmus pedibus sedebat, claudus ex utero matris suæ, qui numquam ambulaverat.	7 they preached the good news.
8 Hic audivit Paulum loquentem. Qui intuitus eum, et videns quia fidem haberet ut salvus fieret,	8 There was a man sitting there who had never walked in his life, because his feet were crippled frombirth;
9 dixit magna voce : Surge super pedes tuos rectus. Et exilivit, et ambulabat.	9 he was listening to Paul preaching, and Paul looked at him intently and saw that he had the faith to becured.
10 Turbæ autem cum vidissent quod fecerat Paulus, levaverunt vocem suam lycaonice, dicentes : Dii similes facti hominibus descenderunt ad nos.	10 Paul said in a loud voice, 'Get to your feet-stand up,' and the cripple jumped up and began to walk.
11 Et vocabant Barnabam Jovem, Paulum vero Mercurium : quoniam ipse erat dux verbi.	11 When the crowds saw what Paul had done they shouted in the language of Lycaonia, 'The gods havecome down to us in human form.'
12 Sacerdos quoque Jovis, qui erat ante civitatem, tauros et coronas ante januas afferens, cum populis volebat sacrificare.	12 They addressed Barnabas as Zeus, and since Paul was the principal speaker they cal ed himHermes.
13 Quod ubi audierunt Apostoli, Barnabas et Paulus, conscissis tunicis suis exilierunt in turbas, clamantes	13 The priests of Zeus-outside-the-Gate, proposing that al the people should offer sacrifice with them,brought garlanded oxen to the gates.
14 et dicentes : Viri, quid hæc facitis ? et nos mortales sumus, similes vobis homines, annuntiantes vobis ab his vanis converti ad Deum vivum, qui fecit cælum, et terram, et mare, et omnia quæ in eis sunt :	14 When the apostles Barnabas and Paul heard what was happening they tore their clothes, and rushedinto the crowd, shouting,
15 qui in præteritis generationibus dimisit omnes gentes ingredi vias suas.	15 'Friends, what do you think you are doing? We are only human beings, mortal like yourselves. Wehave come with good news to make you turn from these empty idols to the living God who made sky and earthand the sea and all that these hold.
16 Et quidem non sine testimonio semetipsum reliquit benefaciens de cælo, dans pluvias et tempora fructifera, implens cibo et lætitia corda nostra.	16 In the past he al owed al the nations to go their own way;
17 Et hæc dicentes, vix sedaverunt turbas ne sibi immolarent.	17 but even then he did not leave you without evidence of himself in the good things he does for you: hesends you rain from heaven and seasons of fruitfulness; he fil s you with food and your hearts with merriment.'
18 Supervenerunt autem quidam ab Antiochia et Iconio Judæi : et persuasis turbis, lapidantesque Paulum, traxerunt extra civitatem, existimantes eum mortuum esse.	18 With this speech they just managed to prevent the crowd from offering them sacrifice.
19 Circumdantibus autem eum discipulis, surgens intravit civitatem, et postera die profectus est cum Barnaba in Derben.	19 Then some Jews arrived from Antioch and Iconium and turned the people against them. They stonedPaul and dragged him outside the town, thinking he was dead.
20 Cumque evangelizassent civitati illi, et docuissent multos, reversi sunt Lystram, et Iconium, et Antiochiam,	20 The disciples came crowding round him but, as they did so, he stood up and went back to the town.The next day he and Barnabas left for Derbe.
21 confirmantes animas discipulorum, exhortantesque ut permanerent in fide : et quoniam per multas tribulationes oportet nos intrare in regnum Dei.	21 Having preached the good news in that town and made a considerable number of disciples, they wentback through Lystra, Iconium and Antioch.
22 Et cum constituissent illis per singulas ecclesias presbyteros, et orassent cum jejunationibus, commendaverunt eos Domino, in quem crediderunt.	22 They put fresh heart into the disciples, encouraging them to persevere in the faith, saying, 'We mustal experience many hardships before we enter the kingdom of God.'
23 Transeuntesque Pisidiam, venerunt in Pamphyliam,	23 In each of these churches they appointed elders, and with prayer and fasting they commended themto the Lord in whom they had come to believe.
24 et loquentes verbum Domini in Perge, descenderunt in Attaliam :	24 They passed through Pisidia and reached Pamphylia.
25 et inde navigaverunt Antiochiam, unde erant traditi gratiæ Dei in opus quod compleverunt.	25 Then after proclaiming the word at Perga they went down to Attalia
26 Cum autem venissent, et congregassent ecclesiam, retulerunt quanta fecisset Deus cum illis, et quia aperuisset gentibus ostium fidei.	26 and from there sailed for Antioch, where they had original y been commended to the grace of God forthe work they had now completed.
27 Morati sunt autem tempus non modicum cum discipulis.	27 On their arrival they assembled the church and gave an account of all that God had done with them,and how he had opened the door of faith to the gentiles.
	28 They stayed there with the disciples for some time.
