VULGATANEW JERUSALEM
In the church at Antioch the following were prophets and teachers: Barnabas, Simeon cal ed Niger, and Lucius of Cyrene, Manaen, who had been brought up with Herod the tetrarch, and Saul.
Ministrantibus autem illis Domino, et jejunantibus, dixit illis Spiritus Sanctus : Segregate mihi Saulum et Barnabam in opus ad quod assumpsi eos.2 One day while they were offering worship to the Lord and keeping a fast, the Holy Spirit said, 'I wantBarnabas and Saul set apart for the work to which I have cal ed them.'
Tunc jejunantes et orantes, imponentesque eis manus, dimiserunt illos.
So it was that after fasting and prayer they laid their hands on them and sent them off.
Et ipsi quidem missi a Spiritu Sancto abierunt Seleuciam : et inde navigaverunt Cyprum.4 So these two, sent on their mission by the Holy Spirit, went down to Seleucia and from there set sail forCyprus.
Habebant autem et Joannem in ministerio.5 They landed at Salamis and proclaimed the word of God in the synagogues of the Jews; John acted astheir assistant.
Et cum perambulassent universam insulam usque Paphum, invenerunt quemdam virum magum pseudoprophetam, Judæum, cui nomen erat Barjesu,6 They travel ed the whole length of the island, and at Paphos they came in contact with a Jewishmagician and false prophet cal ed Bar-Jesus.
Hic, accersitis Barnaba et Saulo, desiderabat audire verbum Dei.7 He was one of the attendants of the proconsul Sergius Paulus, who was an extremely intelligent man.The proconsul summoned Barnabas and Saul and asked to hear the word of God,
Resistebat autem illis Elymas magus (sic enim interpretatur nomen ejus), quærens avertere proconsulem a fide.8 but Elymas the magician (this is what his name means in Greek) tried to stop them so as to prevent theproconsul's conversion to the faith.
Then Saul, whose other name is Paul, filled with the Holy Spirit, looked at him intently
dixit : O plene omni dolo et omni fallacia, fili diaboli, inimice omnis justitiæ, non desinis subvertere vias Domini rectas.10 and said, 'You utter fraud, you impostor, you son of the devil, you enemy of al uprightness, will younot stop twisting the straightforward ways of the Lord?
Et confestim cecidit in eum caligo et tenebræ : et circuiens quærebat qui ei manum daret.11 Now watch how the hand of the Lord wil strike you: you wil be blind, and for a time you wil not seethe sun.' That instant, everything went misty and dark for him, and he groped about to find someone to lead himby the hand.
Tunc proconsul cum vidisset factum, credidit admirans super doctrina Domini.
The proconsul, who had watched everything, became a believer, being much struck by what he hadlearnt about the Lord.
Joannes autem discedens ab eis, reversus est Jerosolymam.13 Paul and his companions went by sea from Paphos to Perga in Pamphylia where John left them to goback to Jerusalem.
Illi vero pertranseuntes Pergen, venerunt Antiochiam Pisidiæ : et ingressi synagogam die sabbatorum, sederunt.14 The others carried on from Perga til they reached Antioch in Pisidia. Here they went to synagogue onthe Sabbath and took their seats.
After the passages from the Law and the Prophets had been read, the presidents of the synagoguesent them a message, 'Brothers, if you would like to address some words of encouragement to the congregation, please do so.'
Surgens autem Paulus, et manu silentium indicens, ait : Viri Israëlitæ, et qui timetis Deum, audite :16 Paul stood up, raised his hand for silence and began to speak: 'Men of Israel, and fearers of God,listen!
Deus plebis Israël elegit patres nostros, et plebem exaltavit cum essent incolæ in terra Ægypti, et in brachio excelso eduxit eos ex ea,17 The God of our nation Israel chose our ancestors and made our people great when they were living inEgypt, a land not their own; then by divine power he led them out
et per quadraginta annorum tempus mores eorum sustinuit in deserto.18 and for about forty years took care of them in the desert.
Et destruens gentes septem in terra Chanaan, sorte distribuit eis terram eorum,19 When he had destroyed seven nations in Canaan, he put them in possession of their land
quasi post quadringentos et quinquaginta annos : et post hæc dedit judices, usque ad Samuel prophetam.20 for about four hundred and fifty years. After this he gave them judges, down to the prophet Samuel.
Et exinde postulaverunt regem : et dedit illis Deus Saul filium Cis, virum de tribu Benjamin, annis quadraginta :21 Then they demanded a king, and God gave them Saul son of Kish, a man of the tribe of Benjamin. After forty years,
et amoto illo, suscitavit illis David regem : cui testimonium perhibens, dixit : Inveni David filium Jesse, virum secundum cor meum, qui faciet omnes voluntates meas.22 he deposed him and raised up David to be king, whom he attested in these words, "I have foundDavid son of Jesse, a man after my own heart, who wil perform my entire wil ."
Hujus Deus ex semine secundum promissionem eduxit Israël salvatorem Jesum,23 To keep his promise, God has raised up for Israel one of David's descendants, Jesus, as Saviour,
prædicante Joanne ante faciem adventus ejus baptismum pœnitentiæ omni populo Israël.24 whose coming was heralded by John when he proclaimed a baptism of repentance for the wholepeople of Israel.
Cum impleret autem Joannes cursum suum, dicebat : Quem me arbitramini esse, non sum ego : sed ecce venit post me, cujus non sum dignus calceamenta pedum solvere.25 Before John ended his course he said, "I am not the one you imagine me to be; there is someonecoming after me whose sandal I am not fit to undo."
Viri fratres, filii generis Abraham, et qui in vobis timent Deum, vobis verbum salutis hujus missum est.26 'My brothers, sons of Abraham's race, and al you godfearers, this message of salvation is meant foryou.
Qui enim habitabant Jerusalem, et principes ejus hunc ignorantes, et voces prophetarum quæ per omne sabbatum leguntur, judicantes impleverunt,27 What the people of Jerusalem and their rulers did, though they did not realise it, was in f
et nullam causam mortis invenientes in eo, petierunt a Pilato ut interficerent eum.28 Though they found nothing to justify his execution, they condemned him and asked Pilate to have himput to death.
Cumque consummassent omnia quæ de eo scripta erant, deponentes eum de ligno, posuerunt eum in monumento.29 When they had carried out everything that scripture foretells about him they took him down from thetree and buried him in a tomb.
Deus vero suscitavit eum a mortuis tertia die : qui visus est per dies multos his30 But God raised him from the dead,
qui simul ascenderant cum eo de Galilæa in Jerusalem : qui usque nunc sunt testes ejus ad plebem.31 and for many days he appeared to those who had accompanied him from Galilee to Jerusalem: and itis these same companions of his who are now his witnesses before our people.
Et nos vobis annuntiamus eam, quæ ad patres nostros repromissio facta est :32 'We have come here to tel you the good news that the promise made to our ancestors has comeabout.
quoniam hanc Deus adimplevit filiis nostris resuscitans Jesum, sicut et in psalmo secundo scriptum est : Filius meus es tu, ego hodie genui te.33 God has fulfil ed it to their children by raising Jesus from the dead. As scripture says in the psalms: You are my son: today I have fathered you.
The fact that God raised him from the dead, never to return to corruption, is no more than what hehad declared: To you I shal give the holy things promised to David which can be relied upon.
Ideoque et alias dicit : Non dabis sanctum tuum videre corruptionem.35 This is also why it says in another text: You wil not al ow your Holy One to see corruption.
David enim in sua generatione cum administrasset, voluntati Dei dormivit : et appositus est ad patres suos, et vidit corruptionem.36 Now when David in his own time had served God's purposes he died; he was buried with hisancestors and has certainly seen corruption.
Quem vero Deus suscitavit a mortuis, non vidit corruptionem.37 The one whom God has raised up, however, has not seen corruption.
Notum igitur sit vobis, viri fratres, quia per hunc vobis remissio peccatorum annuntiatur, et ab omnibus quibus non potuistis in lege Moysi justificari,38 'My brothers, I want you to realise that it is through him that forgiveness of sins is being proclaimed toyou. Through him justification from al sins from which the Law of Moses was unable to justify
in hoc omnis qui credit, justificatur.39 is being offered to every believer.
Videte ergo ne superveniat vobis quod dictum est in prophetis :40 'So be careful -- or what the prophets say wil happen to you.
Videte contemptores, et admiramini, et disperdimini :
quia opus operor ego in diebus vestris,
Cast your eyes around you, mockers; be amazed, and perish! For I am doing something in your owndays that you would never believe if you were told of it.'
Exeuntibus autem illis rogabant ut sequenti sabbato loquerentur sibi verba hæc.42 As they left they were urged to continue this preaching the fol owing Sabbath.
When the meeting broke up many Jews and devout converts fol owed Paul and Barnabas, and in theirtalks with them Paul and Barnabas urged them to remain faithful to the grace God had given them.
Sequenti vero sabbato pene universa civitas convenit audire verbum Dei.44 The next Sabbath almost the whole town assembled to hear the word of God.
Videntes autem turbas Judæi, repleti sunt zelo, et contradicebant his quæ a Paulo dicebantur, blasphemantes.45 When they saw the crowds, the Jews, fil ed with jealousy, used blasphemies to contradict everythingPaul said.
Tunc constanter Paulus et Barnabas dixerunt : Vobis oportebat primum loqui verbum Dei : sed quoniam repellitis illud, et indignos vos judicatis æternæ vitæ, ecce convertimur ad gentes.46 Then Paul and Barnabas spoke out fearlessly. 'We had to proclaim the word of God to you first, butsince you have rejected it, since you do not think yourselves worthy of eternal life, here and now we turn to thegentiles.
Sic enim præcepit nobis Dominus : Posui te in lucem gentium, ut sis in salutem usque ad extremum terræ.47 For this is what the Lord commanded us to do when he said: I have made you a light to the nations,so that my salvation may reach the remotest parts of the earth.'
It made the gentiles very happy to hear this and they gave thanks to the Lord for his message; all whowere destined for eternal life became believers.
Disseminabatur autem verbum Domini per universam regionem.49 Thus the word of the Lord spread through the whole countryside.
Judæi autem concitaverunt mulieres religiosas et honestas, et primos civitatis, et excitaverunt persecutionem in Paulum et Barnabam : et ejecerunt eos de finibus suis.50 But the Jews worked on some of the devout women of the upper classes and the leading men of thecity; they stirred up a persecution against Paul and Barnabas and expel ed them from their territory.
At illi excusso pulvere pedum in eos, venerunt Iconium.51 So they shook the dust from their feet in protest against them and went off to Iconium; but theconverts were filled with joy and the Holy Spirit.
Discipuli quoque replebantur gaudio, et Spiritu Sancto.
