VULGATANEW JERUSALEM
Si acceperit homo uxorem, et habuerit eam, et non invenerit gratiam ante oculos ejus propter aliquam fœditatem : scribet libellum repudii, et dabit in manu illius, et dimittet eam de domo sua.1 'Suppose a man has taken a wife and consummated the marriage; but she has not pleased him andhe has found some impropriety of which to accuse her; he has therefore made out a writ of divorce for her andhanded it to her and then dismissed her from his house;
Cumque egressa alterum maritum duxerit,2 she leaves his home and goes away to become the wife of another man.
et ille quoque oderit eam, dederitque ei libellum repudii, et dimiserit de domo sua, vel certe mortuus fuerit :3 Then suppose this second man who has married her takes a dislike to her and makes out a writ ofdivorce for her and hands it to her and dismisses her from his house or if this other man who took her as his wifedies,
non poterit prior maritus recipere eam in uxorem : quia polluta est, et abominabilis facta est coram Domino : ne peccare facias terram tuam, quam Dominus Deus tuus tradiderit tibi possidendam.
her first husband, who has repudiated her, may not take her back as his wife now that she has beenmade unclean in this way. For that is detestable in Yahweh's eyes and you must not bring guilt on the countrywhich Yahweh your God is giving you as your heritage.
Cum acceperit homo nuper uxorem, non procedet ad bellum, nec ei quippiam necessitatis injungetur publicæ, sed vacabit absque culpa domi suæ, ut uno anno lætetur cum uxore sua.5 'If a man is newly married, he must not join the army, nor must he be pestered at home; he must beleft at home, free of al obligations for one year, to make his new wife happy.
Non accipies loco pignoris inferiorem, et superiorem molam : quia animam suam opposuit tibi.6 'No one may take a mil or a mil stone in pledge; that would be to take life itself in pledge.
Si deprehensus fuerit homo sollicitans fratrem suum de filiis Israël, et vendito eo acceperit pretium, interficietur, et auferes malum de medio tui.7 'If anyone is caught, having kidnapped one of his brother-Israelites, whether he makes him his slaveor sel s him, that thief must die. You must banish this evil from among you.
Observa diligenter ne incurras plagam lepræ, sed facies quæcumque docuerint te sacerdotes Levitici generis, juxta id quod præcepi eis, et imple sollicite.8 'In a case of a virulent skin-disease, take care you faithful y observe and exactly carry out everythingthat the levitical priests direct you to do. You must keep and observe everything that I have commanded them.
Mementote quæ fecerit Dominus Deus vester Mariæ in via cum egrederemini de Ægypto.9 Remember what Yahweh your God did to Miriam when you were on your way out of Egypt.
Cum repetes a proximo tuo rem aliquam, quam debet tibi, non ingredieris domum ejus ut pignus auferas :10 'If you are making your brother a loan on pledge, you must not go into his house and seize thepledge, whatever it may be.
sed stabis foris, et ille tibi proferet quod habuerit.11 You must stay outside, and the man to whom you are making the loan must bring the pledge out toyou.
Sin autem pauper est, non pernoctabit apud te pignus,12 And if the man is poor, you must not go to bed with his pledge in your possession;
sed statim reddes ei ante solis occasum : ut dormiens in vestimento suo, benedicat tibi, et habeas justitiam coram Domino Deo tuo.13 you must return it to him at sunset so that he can sleep in his cloak and bless you; and it wil be anupright action on your part in God's view.
Non negabis mercedem indigentis, et pauperis fratris tui, sive advenæ, qui tecum moratur in terra, et intra portas tuas est :14 'You must not exploit a poor and needy wage-earner, be he one of your brothers or a foreignerresident in your community.
sed eadem die reddes ei pretium laboris sui ante solis occasum, quia pauper est, et ex eo sustentat animam suam : ne clamet contra te ad Dominum, et reputetur tibi in peccatum.15 You must pay him his wages each day, not al owing the sun to set before you do, since he, beingpoor, needs them badly; otherwise he may appeal to Yahweh against you, and you would incur guilt.
Non occidentur patres pro filiis, nec filii pro patribus, sed unusquisque pro peccato suo morietur.
'Parents may not be put to death for their children, nor children for parents, but each must be put todeath for his own crime.
Non pervertes judicium advenæ et pupilli, nec auferes pignoris loco viduæ vestimentum.17 'You must not infringe the rights of the foreigner or the orphan; you must not take a widow's clothesin pledge.
Memento quod servieris in Ægypto, et eruerit te Dominus Deus tuus inde. Idcirco præcipio tibi ut facias hanc rem.18 Remember that you were once a slave in Egypt and that Yahweh your God redeemed you from that.That is why I am giving you this order.
Quando messueris segetem in agro tuo, et oblitus manipulum reliqueris, non reverteris, ut tollas illum : sed advenam, et pupillum, et viduam auferre patieris, ut benedicat tibi Dominus Deus tuus in omni opere manuum tuarum.19 'If, when reaping the harvest in your field, you overlook a sheaf in that field, do not go back for it. Theforeigner, the orphan and the widow shal have it, so that Yahweh your God may bless you in al yourundertakings.
Si fruges collegeris olivarum, quidquid remanserit in arboribus, non reverteris ut colligas : sed relinques advenæ, pupillo, ac viduæ.20 'When you beat your olive tree, you must not go over the branches twice. The foreigner, the orphanand the widow shall have the rest.
Si vindemiaveris vineam tuam, non colliges remanentes racemos : sed cedent in usus advenæ, pupilli, ac viduæ.21 'When you harvest your vineyard, you must not pick it over a second time. The foreigner, the orphanand the widow shall have the rest.
Memento quod et tu servieris in Ægypto, et idcirco præcipio tibi ut facias hanc rem.22 'Remember that you were once a slave in Egypt. That is why I am giving you this order.'
