VULGATANEW JERUSALEM
Convocatis autem duodecim Apostolis, dedit illis virtutem et potestatem super omnia dæmonia, et ut languores curarent.1 He cal ed the Twelve together and gave them power and authority over all devils and to cure diseases,
Et misit illos prædicare regnum Dei, et sanare infirmos.2 and he sent them out to proclaim the kingdom of God and to heal.
He said to them, 'Take nothing for the journey: neither staff, nor haversack, nor bread, nor money; anddo not have a spare tunic.
Et in quamcumque domum intraveritis, ibi manete, et inde ne exeatis.4 Whatever house you enter, stay there; and when you leave let your departure be from there.
Et quicumque non receperint vos : exeuntes de civitate illa, etiam pulverem pedum vestrorum excutite in testimonium supra illos.5 As for those who do not welcome you, when you leave their town shake the dust from your feet asevidence against them.'
So they set out and went from village to vil age proclaiming the good news and healing everywhere.
Audivit autem Herodes tetrarcha omnia quæ fiebant ab eo, et hæsitabat eo quod diceretur7 Meanwhile Herod the tetrarch had heard about al that was going on; and he was puzzled, becausesome people were saying that John had risen from the dead,
a quibusdam : Quia Joannes surrexit a mortuis : a quibusdam vero : Quia Elias apparuit : ab aliis autem : Quia propheta unus de antiquis surrexit.8 others that Elijah had reappeared, still others that one of the ancient prophets had come back to life.
But Herod said, 'John? I beheaded him. So who is this I hear such reports about?' And he was anxiousto see him.
Et reversi Apostoli, narraverunt illi quæcumque fecerunt : et assumptis illis secessit seorsum in locum desertum, qui est Bethsaidæ.10 On their return the apostles gave him an account of al they had done. Then he took them with him andwithdrew towards a town called Bethsaida where they could be by themselves.
But the crowds got to know and they went after him. He made them welcome and talked to them aboutthe kingdom of God; and he cured those who were in need of healing.
It was late afternoon when the Twelve came up to him and said, 'Send the people away, and they cango to the vil ages and farms round about to find lodging and food; for we are in a lonely place here.'
He replied, 'Give them something to eat yourselves.' But they said, 'We have no more than five loavesand two fish, unless we are to go ourselves and buy food for al these people.'
Erant autem fere viri quinque millia. Ait autem ad discipulos suos : Facite illos discumbere per convivia quinquagenos.14 For there were about five thousand men. But he said to his disciples, 'Get them to sit down in parties ofabout fifty.'
Et ita fecerunt : et discumbere fecerunt omnes.15 They did so and made them al sit down.
Then he took the five loaves and the two fish, raised his eyes to heaven, and said the blessing overthem; then he broke them and handed them to his disciples to distribute among the crowd.
They al ate as much as they wanted, and when the scraps left over were col ected they fil ed twelvebaskets.
Et factum est cum solus esset orans, erant cum illo et discipuli : et interrogavit illos, dicens : Quem me dicunt esse turbæ ?18 Now it happened that he was praying alone, and his disciples came to him and he put this question tothem, 'Who do the crowds say I am?'
At illi responderunt, et dixerunt : Joannem Baptistam, alii autem Eliam, alii vero quia unus propheta de prioribus surrexit.19 And they answered, 'Some say John the Baptist; others Elijah; others again one of the ancientprophets come back to life.'
Respondens Simon Petrus, dixit : Christum Dei.20 'But you,' he said to them, 'who do you say I am?' It was Peter who spoke up. 'The Christ of God,' hesaid.
At ille increpans illos, præcepit ne cui dicerent hoc,21 But he gave them strict orders and charged them not to say this to anyone.
dicens : Quia oportet Filium hominis multa pati, et reprobari a senioribus, et principibus sacerdotum, et scribis, et occidi, et tertia die resurgere.
He said, 'The Son of man is destined to suffer grievously, to be rejected by the elders and chief priestsand scribes and to be put to death, and to be raised up on the third day.'
Dicebat autem ad omnes : Si quis vult post me venire, abneget semetipsum, et tollat crucem suam quotidie, et sequatur me.23 Then, speaking to al , he said, 'If anyone wants to be a fol ower of mine, let him renounce himself andtake up his cross every day and fol ow me.
Qui enim voluerit animam suam salvam facere, perdet illam : nam qui perdiderit animam suam propter me, salvam faciet illam.24 Anyone who wants to save his life wil lose it; but anyone who loses his life for my sake, wil save it.
What benefit is it to anyone to win the whole world and forfeit or lose his very self?
Nam qui me erubuerit, et meos sermones : hunc Filius hominis erubescet cum venerit in majestate sua, et Patris, et sanctorum angelorum.26 For if anyone is ashamed of me and of my words, of him the Son of man wil be ashamed when hecomes in his own glory and in the glory of the Father and the holy angels.
'I tel you truly, there are some standing here who wil not taste death before they see the kingdom ofGod.'
Factum est autem post hæc verba fere dies octo, et assumpsit Petrum, et Jacobum, et Joannem, et ascendit in montem ut oraret.28 Now about eight days after this had been said, he took with him Peter, John and James and went upthe mountain to pray.
Et facta est, dum oraret, species vultus ejus altera : et vestitus ejus albus et refulgens.29 And it happened that, as he was praying, the aspect of his face was changed and his clothing becamesparkling white.
Et ecce duo viri loquebantur cum illo. Erant autem Moyses et Elias,30 And suddenly there were two men talking to him; they were Moses and Elijah
visi in majestate : et dicebant excessum ejus, quem completurus erat in Jerusalem.31 appearing in glory, and they were speaking of his passing which he was to accomplish in Jerusalem.
Et evigilantes viderunt majestatem ejus, et duos viros qui stabant cum illo.32 Peter and his companions were heavy with sleep, but they woke up and saw his glory and the two menstanding with him.
Et factum est cum discederent ab illo, ait Petrus ad Jesum : Præceptor, bonum est nos hic esse : et faciamus tria tabernacula, unum tibi, et unum Moysi, et unum Eliæ : nesciens quid diceret.33 As these were leaving him, Peter said to Jesus, 'Master, it is wonderful for us to be here; so let usmake three shelters, one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah.' He did not know what he was saying.
Hæc autem illo loquente, facta est nubes, et obumbravit eos : et timuerunt, intrantibus illis in nubem.34 As he was saying this, a cloud came and covered them with shadow; and when they went into thecloud the disciples were afraid.
Et vox facta est de nube, dicens : Hic est Filius meus dilectus, ipsum audite.35 And a voice came from the cloud saying, 'This is my Son, the Chosen One. Listen to him.'
And after the voice had spoken, Jesus was found alone. The disciples kept silence and, at that time, told no one what they had seen.
Factum est autem in sequenti die, descendentibus illis de monte, occurrit illis turba multa.37 Now it happened that on the fol owing day when they were coming down from the mountain a largecrowd came to meet him.
Et ecce vir de turba exclamavit, dicens : Magister, obsecro te, respice in filium meum quia unicus est mihi :38 And suddenly a man in the crowd cried out. 'Master,' he said, 'I implore you to look at my son: he is myonly child.
et ecce spiritus apprehendit eum, et subito clamat, et elidit, et dissipat eum cum spuma, et vix discedit dilanians eum :39 A spirit wil suddenly take hold of him, and all at once it gives a sudden cry and throws the boy intoconvulsions with foaming at the mouth; it is slow to leave him, but when it does, it leaves the boy worn out.
et rogavi discipulos tuos ut ejicerent illum, et non potuerunt.40 I begged your disciples to drive it out, and they could not.'
Respondens autem Jesus, dixit : O generatio infidelis, et perversa, usquequo ero apud vos, et patiar vos ? adduc huc filium tuum.41 In reply Jesus said, 'Faithless and perverse generation! How much longer must I be among you andput up with you? Bring your son here.'
Et cum accederet, elisit illum dæmonium, et dissipavit.42 Even while the boy was coming, the devil threw him to the ground in convulsions. But Jesus rebukedthe unclean spirit and cured the boy and gave him back to his father,
Et increpavit Jesus spiritum immundum, et sanavit puerum, et reddidit illum patri ejus.
and everyone was awestruck by the greatness of God. But while everyone was ful of admiration for alhe did, he said to his disciples,
For your part, you must have these words constantly in mind: The Son of man is going to be deliveredinto the power of men.'
But they did not understand what he said; it was hidden from them so that they should not see themeaning of it, and they were afraid to ask him about it.
Intravit autem cogitatio in eos quis eorum major esset.46 An argument started between them about which of them was the greatest.
At Jesus videns cogitationes cordis illorum, apprehendit puerum, et statuit illum secus se,47 Jesus knew what thoughts were going through their minds, and he took a little child whom he set byhis side
et ait illis : Quicumque susceperit puerum istum in nomine meo, me recipit : et quicumque me receperit, recipit eum qui me misit.
and then he said to them, 'Anyone who welcomes this little child in my name welcomes me; andanyone who welcomes me, welcomes the one who sent me. The least among you all is the one who is thegreatest.'
Respondens autem Joannes dixit : Præceptor, vidimus quemdam in nomine tuo ejicientem dæmonia, et prohibuimus eum : quia non sequitur nobiscum.49 John spoke up. 'Master,' he said, 'we saw someone driving out devils in your name, and because he isnot with us we tried to stop him.'
But Jesus said to him, 'You must not stop him: anyone who is not against you is for you.'
Factum est autem dum complerentur dies assumptionis ejus, et ipse faciem suam firmavit ut iret in Jerusalem.51 Now it happened that as the time drew near for him to be taken up, he resolutely turned his facetowards Jerusalem
Et misit nuntios ante conspectum suum : et euntes intraverunt in civitatem Samaritanorum ut parerent illi.52 and sent messengers ahead of him. These set out, and they went into a Samaritan vil age to makepreparations for him,
Et non receperunt eum, quia facies ejus erat euntis in Jerusalem.53 but the people would not receive him because he was making for Jerusalem.
Cum vidissent autem discipuli ejus Jacobus et Joannes, dixerunt : Domine, vis dicimus ut ignis descendat de cælo, et consumat illos ?54 Seeing this, the disciples James and John said, 'Lord, do you want us to cal down fire from heaven toburn them up?'
Et conversus increpavit illos, dicens : Nescitis cujus spiritus estis.55 But he turned and rebuked them,
and they went on to another village.
Factum est autem : ambulantibus illis in via, dixit quidam ad illum : Sequar te quocumque ieris.57 As they travel ed along they met a man on the road who said to him, 'I wil fol ow you wherever you go.'
Dixit illi Jesus : Vulpes foveas habent, et volucres cæli nidos : Filius autem hominis non habet ubi caput reclinet.58 Jesus answered, 'Foxes have holes and the birds of the air have nests, but the Son of man hasnowhere to lay his head.'
Another to whom he said, 'Fol ow me,' replied, 'Let me go and bury my father first.'
Dixitque ei Jesus : Sine ut mortui sepeliant mortuos suos : tu autem vade, et annuntia regnum Dei.60 But he answered, 'Leave the dead to bury their dead; your duty is to go and spread the news of thekingdom of God.'
Et ait alter : Sequar te Domine, sed permitte mihi primum renuntiare his quæ domi sunt.61 Another said, 'I wil fol ow you, sir, but first let me go and say good -- bye to my people at home.'
Ait ad illum Jesus : Nemo mittens manum suam ad aratrum, et respiciens retro, aptus est regno Dei.62 Jesus said to him, 'Once the hand is laid on the plough, no one who looks back is fit for the kingdom ofGod.'
