VULGATANEW JERUSALEM
1 Oratio Habacuc prophetæ, pro ignorantiis.
1 A prayer of the prophet Habakkuk; tone as for dirges.
2 Domine, audivi auditionem tuam, et timui.
Domine, opus tuum, in medio annorum vivifica illud ;
in medio annorum notum facies :
cum iratus fueris, misericordiæ recordaberis.
2 Yahweh, I have heard of your renown; your work, Yahweh, inspires me with dread. Make it live again inour time, make it known in our time; in wrath remember mercy.
3 Deus ab austro veniet,
et Sanctus de monte Pharan :
operuit cælos gloria ejus,
et laudis ejus plena est terra.
3 Eloah comes from Teman, and the Holy One from Mount Paran. Pause His majesty covers theheavens, and his glory fills the earth.
4 Splendor ejus ut lux erit,
cornua in manibus ejus :
ibi abscondita est fortitudo ejus.
4 His brightness is like the day, rays flash from his hands, that is where his power lies hidden.
5 Ante faciem ejus ibit mors,
et egredietur diabolus ante pedes ejus.
5 Pestilence goes before him and Plague follows close behind.
6 Stetit, et mensus est terram ;
aspexit, et dissolvit gentes,
et contriti sunt montes sæculi :
incurvati sunt colles mundi ab itineribus æternitatis ejus.
6 When he stands up, he makes the earth tremble, with his glance he makes the nations quake. And theeternal mountains are dislodged, the everlasting hil s sink down, his pathway from of old.
7 Pro iniquitate vidi tentoria Æthiopiæ ;
turbabuntur pelles terræ Madian.
7 I saw the tents of Cushan in trouble, the tent-curtains of Midian shuddering.
8 Numquid in fluminibus iratus es, Domine ?
aut in fluminibus furor tuus ?
vel in mari indignatio tua ?
Qui ascendes super equos tuos, et quadrigæ tuæ salvatio.
8 Yahweh, are you enraged with the rivers, are you angry with the sea, that you should mount yourchargers, your rescuing chariots?
9 Suscitans suscitabis arcum tuum,
juramenta tribubus quæ locutus es ;
fluvios scindes terræ.
9 You uncover your bow, and give the string its fill of arrows. PauseYou drench the soil with torrents;
10 Viderunt te, et doluerunt montes ;
gurges aquarum transiit :
dedit abyssus vocem suam ;
altitudo manus suas levavit.
10 the mountains see you and tremble, great floods sweep by, the abyss roars aloud, lifting high itswaves.
11 Sol et luna steterunt in habitaculo suo :
in luce sagittarum tuarum ibunt,
in splendore fulgurantis hastæ tuæ.
11 Sun and moon stay inside their dwel ings, they flee at the light of your arrows, at the flash of yourlightning-spear.
12 In fremitu conculcabis terram ;
in furore obstupefacies gentes.
12 In rage you stride across the land, in anger you trample the nations.
13 Egressus es in salutem populi tui,
in salutem cum christo tuo :
percussisti caput de domo impii,
denudasti fundamentum ejus usque ad collum.
13 You marched to save your people, to save your anointed one; you wounded the head of the house ofthe wicked, laid bare the foundation to the rock. Pause
14 Maledixisti sceptris ejus,
capiti bellatorum ejus,
venientibus ut turbo ad dispergendum me :
exsultatio eorum, sicut ejus qui devorat pauperem in abscondito.
14 With your shafts you pierced the leader of his warriors who stormed out with shouts of joy to scatterus, as if they meant to devour some poor wretch in their lair.
15 Viam fecisti in mari equis tuis,
in luto aquarum multarum.
15 With your horses you trampled through the sea, through the surging abyss!
16 Audivi, et conturbatus est venter meus ;
a voce contremuerunt labia mea.
Ingrediatur putredo in ossibus meis,
et subter me scateat :
ut requiescam in die tribulationis,
ut ascendam ad populum accinctum nostrum.
16 When I heard, I trembled to the core, my lips quivered at the sound; my bones became disjointed andmy legs gave way beneath me. Calmly I await the day of anguish which is dawning on the people now attackingus.
17 Ficus enim non florebit,
et non erit germen in vineis ;
mentietur opus olivæ,
et arva non afferent cibum :
abscindetur de ovili pecus,
et non erit armentum in præsepibus.
17 (For the fig tree is not to blossom, nor wil the vines bear fruit, the olive crop wil disappoint and thefields wil yield no food; the sheep wil vanish from the fold; no cattle in the stal s.)
18 Ego autem in Domino gaudebo ;
et exsultabo in Deo Jesu meo.
18 But I shal rejoice in Yahweh, I shall exult in God my Saviour.
19 Deus Dominus fortitudo mea,
et ponet pedes meos quasi cervorum :
et super excelsa mea deducet me
victor in psalmis canentem.
19 Yahweh my Lord is my strength, he wil make my feet as light as a doe's, and set my steps on theheights. For the choirmaster; on stringed instruments.
