VULGATANEW JERUSALEM
Locutusque est Dominus ad Moysen, dicens :1 Yahweh spoke to Moses and said,
Loquere ad filios Israël, et dices ad eos : Vir, sive mulier, cum fecerint votum ut sanctificentur, et se voluerint Domino consecrare :2 'Speak to the Israelites and say: "If a man or a woman wishes to make a vow, the nazirite vow, to vowhimself to Yahweh,
a vino, et omni quod inebriare potest, abstinebunt. Acetum ex vino, et ex qualibet alia potione, et quidquid de uva exprimitur, non bibent : uvas recentes siccasque non comedent3 he wil abstain from wine and fermented liquor, he will not drink vinegar derived from one or the other,he wil not drink grape-juice or eat grapes, be they fresh or dried.
cunctis diebus quibus ex voto Domino consecrantur : quidquid ex vinea esse potest, ab uva passa usque ad acinum non comedent.4 For the duration of his vow he wil eat nothing that comes from the vine, not even juice of unripe grapesor skins of grapes.
Omni tempore separationis suæ novacula non transibit per caput ejus usque ad completum diem, quo Domino consecratur. Sanctus erit, crescente cæsarie capitis ejus.5 As long as he is bound by his vow, no razor wil touch his head; until the time for which he has vowedhimself to Yahweh is completed, he remains consecrated and will let his hair grow freely.
Omni tempore consecrationis suæ, super mortuum non ingredietur,6 For the entire period of his vow to Yahweh, he wil not go near a corpse,
nec super patris quidem et matris et fratris sororisque funere contaminabitur, quia consecratio Dei sui super caput ejus est.7 he wil not make himself unclean for his father or his mother, or his brother or his sister, should theydie, since on his head he carries his vow to his God.
Omnibus diebus separationis suæ sanctus erit Domino.8 Throughout the whole of his vow he is a person consecrated to Yahweh.
Sin autem mortuus fuerit subito quispiam coram eo, polluetur caput consecrationis ejus : quod radet illico in eadem die purgationis suæ, et rursum septima.9 "If anyone suddenly dies near him, making his vowed hair unclean, he wil shave his head on the dayhe is purified, he wil shave his head on the seventh day.
In octava autem die offeret duos turtures, vel duos pullos columbæ sacerdoti in introitu fœderis testimonii.10 On the eighth day, he wil bring two turtledoves or two young pigeons to the priest, at the entrance tothe Tent of Meeting.
Facietque sacerdos unum pro peccato, et alterum in holocaustum, et deprecabitur pro eo, quia peccavit super mortuo : sanctificabitque caput ejus in die illo :11 The priest wil offer one as a sacrifice for sin, and the other as a burnt offering and wil then performfor the person the rite of expiation for the pollution which he has contracted from the corpse. He wil consecratehis head that same day;
et consecrabit Domino dies separationis illius, offerens agnum anniculum pro peccato : ita tamen ut dies priores irriti fiant, quoniam polluta est sanctificatio ejus.12 he wil vow himself to Yahweh for the period of his nazirate, and wil bring a male yearling lamb as asacrifice of reparation. The time already spent wil not count, since his hair had become unclean.
Ista est lex consecrationis. Cum dies, quos ex voto decreverat, complebuntur, adducet eum ad ostium tabernaculi fœderis,13 "This is the ritual for the nazirite on the day when the period of his vow is completed. He will be led tothe entrance of the Tent of Meeting,
et offeret oblationes ejus Domino, agnum anniculum immaculatum in holocaustum, et ovem anniculam immaculatam pro peccato, et arietem immaculatum, hostiam pacificam,14 bringing his offering to Yahweh: an unblemished male yearling lamb as a burnt offering, anunblemished yearling ewe lamb as a sacrifice for sin, an unblemished ram as a peace offering,
canistrum quoque panum azymorum qui conspersi sint oleo, et lagana absque fermento uncta oleo, ac libamina singulorum :15 and a basket of unleavened loaves made of fine flour mixed with oil, and of unleavened wafersspread with oil, with the cereal offerings and libations appropriate to them.
quæ offeret sacerdos coram Domino, et faciet tam pro peccato, quam in holocaustum.16 The priest, having brought al this before Yahweh, wil offer the nazirite's sin sacrifice and burntoffering.
Arietem vero immolabit hostiam pacificam Domino, offerens simul canistrum azymorum, et libamenta quæ ex more debentur.17 The latter wil then offer the ram as a communion sacrifice with the basket of unleavened bread, andthe priest wil offer the accompanying cereal offering and libation.
Tunc radetur nazaræus ante ostium tabernaculi fœderis cæsarie consecrationis suæ : tolletque capillos ejus, et ponet super ignem, qui est suppositus sacrificio pacificorum :18 The nazirite wil then shave off his vowed hair at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting and, taking thelocks of his vowed head, he wil put them in the fire of the communion sacrifice.
et armum coctum arietis, tortamque absque fermento unam de canistro, et laganum azymum unum, et tradet in manus nazaræi, postquam rasum fuerit caput ejus.19 The priest wil take the shoulder of the ram, as soon as it is cooked, with an unleavened cake fromthe basket, and an unleavened wafer, and put them into the hands of the nazirite once he has shaved off hishair.
Susceptaque rursum ab eo, elevabit in conspectu Domini : et sanctificata sacerdotis erunt, sicut pectusculum, quod separari jussum est, et femur. Post hæc, potest bibere nazaræus vinum.20 With these he wil make the gesture of offering before Yahweh; as it is a holy thing, it reverts to thepriest, in addition to the forequarter that has been presented and the thigh that has been set aside. After this, thenazirite may drink wine.
Ista est lex nazaræi, cum voverit oblationem suam Domino tempore consecrationis suæ, exceptis his, quæ invenerit manus ejus : juxta quod mente devoverat, ita faciet ad perfectionem sanctificationis suæ.
"Such is the ritual for the nazirite. If, besides his hair, he has also vowed a personal offering toYahweh, he will (apart from anything else that his means al ow) fulfil the vow that he has made, in addition towhat the ritual prescribes for his hair." '
Locutusque est Dominus ad Moysen, dicens :22 Yahweh spoke to Moses and said,
Loquere Aaron et filiis ejus : Sic benedicetis filiis Israël, et dicetis eis :23 'Speak to Aaron and his sons and say: "This is how you must bless the Israelites. You wil say:
Benedicat tibi Dominus, et custodiat te.24 May Yahweh bless you and keep you.
Ostendat Dominus faciem suam tibi, et misereatur tui.25 May Yahweh let his face shine on you and be gracious to you.
Convertat Dominus vultum suum ad te, et det tibi pacem.26 May Yahweh show you his face and bring you peace."
Invocabuntque nomen meum super filios Israël, et ego benedicam eis.27 This is how they must cal down my name on the Israelites, and then I shal bless them.'
