VULGATA	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Arreptisque Nadab et Abiu filii Aaron thuribulis, posuerunt ignem, et incensum desuper, offerentes coram Domino ignem alienum : quod eis præceptum non erat.	1 Aaron's sons Nadab and Abihu each took his censer, put fire in it and incense on the fire, andpresented unauthorised fire before Yahweh, which was not in accordance with his orders.
2 Egressusque ignis a Domino, devoravit eos, et mortui sunt coram Domino.	2 At this a flame leapt out from Yahweh's presence and swal owed them up, and they perished beforeYahweh.
3 Dixitque Moyses ad Aaron : Hoc est quod locutus est Dominus : Sanctificabor in iis qui appropinquant mihi, et in conspectu omnis populi glorificabor. Quod audiens tacuit Aaron.	3 Moses then said to Aaron, 'That is what Yahweh meant when he said: In those who are close to me Ishow my holiness, and before al the people I show my glory.' Aaron remained silent.
4 Vocatis autem Moyses Misaële et Elisaphan filiis Oziel, patrui Aaron, ait ad eos : Ite, et tollite fratres vestros de conspectu sanctuarii, et asportate extra castra.	4 Moses summoned Mishael and Elzaphan, sons of Aaron's uncle Uzziel, and said to them, 'Come hereand take your brothers away from the sanctuary, out of the camp.'
5 Confestimque pergentes, tulerunt eos sicut jacebant, vestitos lineis tunicis, et ejecerunt foras, ut sibi fuerat imperatum.	5 They came and carried them away, still in their tunics, out of the camp, as Moses had said.
6 Locutusque est Moyses ad Aaron, et ad Eleazar, et Ithamar, filios ejus : Capita vestra nolite nudare, et vestimenta nolite scindere, ne forte moriamini, et super omnem cœtum oriatur indignatio. Fratres vestri, et omnis domus Israël, plangant incendium quod Dominus suscitavit :	6 Moses said to Aaron and his sons Eleazar and Ithamar, 'Do not disorder your hair or tear your clothes;or you may incur death and his retribution may overtake the whole community. No, it is for the entire House ofIsrael to lament your brothers who have been the victims of Yahweh's fire.
7 vos autem non egrediemini fores tabernaculi, alioquin peribitis : oleum quippe sanctæ unctionis est super vos. Qui fecerunt omnia juxta præceptum Moysi.	7 To avoid incurring death, do not leave the entrance to the Tent of Meeting, for Yahweh's anointing oilis on you.' And they did as Moses said.
8 Dixit quoque Dominus ad Aaron :	8 Yahweh spoke to Aaron and said:
9 Vinum, et omne quod inebriare potest, non bibetis tu et filii tui, quando intratis in tabernaculum testimonii, ne moriamini : quia præceptum sempiternum est in generationes vestras :	9 'When you come to the Tent of Meeting, you and your sons with you, to avoid incurring death you maynot drink wine or any other fermented liquor. This is a perpetual law for all your descendants.
10 et ut habeatis scientiam discernendi inter sanctum et profanum, inter pollutum et mundum ;	10 And so shal it be also when you separate the sacred from the profane, the unclean from the clean,
11 doceatisque filios Israël omnia legitima mea quæ locutus est Dominus ad eos per manum Moysi.	11 and when you teach the Israelites any of the decrees that Yahweh has pronounced for them throughMoses.'
12 Locutusque est Moyses ad Aaron, et ad Eleazar, et Ithamar, filios ejus, qui erant residui : Tollite sacrificium, quod remansit de oblatione Domini, et comedite illud absque fermento juxta altare, quia Sanctum sanctorum est.	12 Moses said to Aaron and his surviving sons, Eleazar and Ithamar, 'Take the cereal offering left overfrom the food burnt for Yahweh. Eat the unleavened part of it beside the altar, since it is especial y holy.
13 Comedetis autem in loco sancto : quod datum est tibi et filiis tuis de oblationibus Domini, sicut præceptum est mihi.	13 Eat it in the holy place, since it is the portion of the food burnt for Yahweh that is prescribed for youand your sons; this is the order I have received.
14 Pectusculum quoque quod oblatum est, et armum qui separatus est, edetis in loco mundissimo tu et filii tui, et filiæ tuæ tecum : tibi enim ac liberis tuis reposita sunt de hostiis salutaribus filiorum Israël :	14 'You, your sons and daughters with you, wil eat in a clean place the forequarter offered and the thighpresented, for these have been given to you and your children as your due from the Israelites' communionsacrifices.
15 eo quod armum et pectus, et adipes qui cremantur in altari, elevaverunt coram Domino, et pertineant ad te, et ad filios tuos, lege perpetua, sicut præcepit Dominus.	15 The thigh presented and the forequarter offered, once the fat has been burnt, revert to you and yoursons with you, after they have been presented before Yahweh with the gesture of offering, in virtue of aperpetual law as Yahweh has ordered.'
16 Inter hæc, hircum, qui oblatus fuerat pro peccato, cum quæreret Moyses, exustum reperit : iratusque contra Eleazar et Ithamar filios Aaron, qui remanserant, ait :	16 Moses then enquired careful y about the goat offered as a sacrifice for sin, and found that they hadburnt it. He was angry with Eleazar and Ithamar, Aaron's surviving sons, and said,
17 Cur non comedistis hostiam pro peccato in loco sancto, quæ Sancta sanctorum est, et data vobis ut portetis iniquitatem multitudinis, et rogetis pro ea in conspectu Domini,	17 'Why did you not eat this victim for sin in the holy place, since it is especial y holy and was given toyou to take away the community's guilt, by performing the rite of expiation for them before Yahweh?
18 præsertim cum de sanguine illius non sit illatum intra sancta, et comedere debueritis eam in Sanctuario, sicut præceptum est mihi ?	18 Since its blood was not taken inside the sanctuary, you should have eaten its meat there, as Iordered you.'
19 Respondit Aaron : Oblata est hodie victima pro peccato, et holocaustum coram Domino : mihi autem accidit quod vides ; quomodo potui comedere eam, aut placere Domino in cæremoniis mente lugubri ?	19 Aaron said to Moses, 'Look, today they offered their sacrifice for sin and their burnt offering beforeYahweh, and these disasters have befal en me. If I had eaten the sin offering today, would this have met withYahweh's approval?'
20 Quod cum audisset Moyses, recepit satisfactionem.	20 And when Moses heard this, he was satisfied.
