Isaiæ 31

VULGATA	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Væ qui descendunt in Ægyptum ad auxilium, in equis sperantes, et habentes fiduciam super quadrigis, quia multæ sunt ; et super equitibus, quia prævalidi nimis ; et non sunt confisi super Sanctum Israël, et Dominum non requisierunt !	1 Woe to those going down to Egypt for help, who put their trust in horses, who rely on the quantity ofchariots, and on great strength of cavalrymen, but do not look to the Holy One of Israel or consult Yahweh.
2 Ipse autem sapiens adduxit malum, et verba sua non abstulit ; et consurget contra domum pessimorum, et contra auxilium operantium iniquitatem.	2 Yet he too is wise and can bring disaster and he wil not go back on his word; he wil rise against thebreed of evil-doers and against those who protect wrong-doers.
3 Ægyptus homo, et non deus ; et equi eorum caro, et non spiritus ; et Dominus inclinabit manum suam, et corruet auxiliator, et cadet cui præstatur auxilium, simulque omnes consumentur.	3 The Egyptian is human, not divine, his horses are flesh, not spirit; Yahweh wil stretch out his hand: theprotector wil stumble, the protected wil fal and all wil perish together.
4 Quia hæc dicit Dominus ad me : Quomodo si rugiat leo et catulus leonis super prædam suam ; et cum occurrerit ei multitudo pastorum, a voce eorum non formidabit, et a multitudine eorum non pavebit : sic descendet Dominus exercituum ut prælietur super montem Sion et super collem ejus.	4 Yes, this is what Yahweh has said to me: As a lion or lion cub growls over its prey, when scores ofshepherds are summoned to drive it off, without being frightened by their shouting or cowed by the noise theymake, just so will Yahweh Sabaoth descend to fight for Mount Zion and for its hil .
5 Sicut aves volantes, sic proteget Dominus exercituum Jerusalem, protegens et liberans, transiens et salvans.	5 Like hovering birds, so wil Yahweh Sabaoth protect Jerusalem; by protecting it, he will save it, bysupporting it, he wil deliver it.
6 Convertimini, sicut in profundum recesseratis, filii Israël.	6 Come back to the one whom the Israelites have so deeply betrayed!
7 In die enim illa abjiciet vir idola argenti sui, et idola auri sui, quæ fecerunt vobis manus vestræ in peccatum.	7 For, that day, each of you wil throw away the false gods of silver and the false gods of gold which yourown sinful hands have made.
8 Et cadet Assur in gladio non viri, et gladius non hominis vorabit eum : et fugiet non a facie gladii, et juvenes ejus vectigales erunt.	8 Assyria will fal by the sword, not that of a man, wil be devoured by the sword, of no human being, hewil flee before the sword and his young warriors will be enslaved.
9 Et fortitudo ejus a terrore transibit, et pavebunt fugientes principes ejus, dixit Dominus : cujus ignis est in Sion et caminus ejus in Jerusalem.	9 In his terror he wil abandon his rock, and his panic-stricken officers desert the standard -- declaresYahweh, whose fire is in Zion, whose furnace, in Jerusalem.
