VULGATANEW JERUSALEM
Dixit quoque Dominus ad Moysen : Ingredere ad Pharaonem, et dices ad eum : Hæc dicit Dominus : Dimitte populum meum, ut sacrificet mihi :1 Yahweh then said to Moses, 'Say to Aaron, "Stretch out your hand with your staff, over the rivers, thecanals and the marshland, and bring the frogs up over the land of Egypt." '
sin autem nolueris dimittere, ecce ego percutiam omnes terminos tuos ranis,2 So Aaron stretched out his hand over the waters of Egypt, and the frogs came up and covered the landof Egypt.
et ebulliet fluvius ranas : quæ ascendent, et ingredientur domum tuam, et cubiculum lectuli tui, et super stratum tuum, et in domos servorum tuorum, et in populum tuum, et in furnos tuos, et in reliquias ciborum tuorum :3 But by their spel s the magicians did the same, bringing frogs over the land of Egypt.
et ad te, et ad populum tuum, et ad omnes servos tuos intrabunt ranæ.4 Pharaoh then summoned Moses and Aaron and said, 'Entreat Yahweh to take the frogs away from meand my subjects, and I promise to let the people go and sacrifice to Yahweh.'
Dixitque Dominus ad Moysen : Dic ad Aaron : Extende manum tuam super fluvios ac super rivos et paludes, et educ ranas super terram Ægypti.5 Moses said to Pharaoh, 'You are the one to gain by it: when would you like me to pray for you, yourofficials and your subjects, so as to rid you and your houses of the frogs so that they wil be left only in theRiver?'
Et extendit Aaron manum super aquas Ægypti, et ascenderunt ranæ, operueruntque terram Ægypti.6 'Tomorrow,' he said. Moses said, 'It shal be as you say, so that you wil know that there is no one likeYahweh our God.
Fecerunt autem et malefici per incantationes suas similiter, eduxeruntque ranas super terram Ægypti.7 The frogs wil leave you, your houses, your officials and your subjects and wil be left only in the River.'
Vocavit autem Pharao Moysen et Aaron, et dixit eis : Orate Dominum ut auferat ranas a me et a populo meo, et dimittam populum ut sacrificet Domino.8 Moses and Aaron left Pharaoh's presence, and Moses pleaded with Yahweh about the frogs which hehad inflicted on Pharaoh.
Dixitque Moyses ad Pharaonem : Constitue mihi quando deprecer pro te, et pro servis tuis, et pro populo tuo, ut abigantur ranæ a te, et a domo tua, et a servis tuis, et a populo tuo : et tantum in flumine remaneant.9 Yahweh did as Moses asked, and in house and courtyard and field the frogs died.
Qui respondit : Cras. At ille : Juxta, inquit, verbum tuum faciam : ut scias quoniam non est sicut Dominus Deus noster.10 They piled them up in heaps and the country stank.
Et recedent ranæ a te, et a domo tua, et a servis tuis, et a populo tuo : et tantum in flumine remanebunt.11 But once Pharaoh saw that there had been a respite, he became obstinate and, as Yahweh hadforetold, refused to listen to them.
Egressique sunt Moyses et Aaron a Pharaone : et clamavit Moyses ad Dominum pro sponsione ranarum quam condixerat Pharaoni.12 Yahweh then said to Moses, 'Say to Aaron, "Stretch out your staff and strike the dust of the earth, andit wil turn into mosquitoes throughout the whole of Egypt." '
Fecitque Dominus juxta verbum Moysi : et mortuæ sunt ranæ de domibus, et de villis, et de agris.13 Aaron stretched out his hand, with his staff, and struck the dust of the earth, and there weremosquitoes on man and beast; al the dust of the earth turned into mosquitoes throughout the whole of Egypt.
Congregaveruntque eas in immensos aggeres, et computruit terra.14 By their spel s the magicians tried to produce mosquitoes in the same way but failed, and there weremosquitoes on man and beast.
Videns autem Pharao quod data esset requies, ingravavit cor suum, et non audivit eos, sicut præceperat Dominus.
So the magicians said to Pharaoh, 'This is the finger of God.' But Pharaoh was obstinate and, asYahweh had foretold, refused to listen to them.
Dixitque Dominus ad Moysen : Loquere ad Aaron : Extende virgam tuam, et percute pulverem terræ : et sint sciniphes in universa terra Ægypti.16 Yahweh then said to Moses, 'Get up early in the morning and confront Pharaoh as he makes his wayto the water. Say to him, "Yahweh says this: Let my people go and worship me.
Feceruntque ita. Et extendit Aaron manum, virgam tenens : percussitque pulverem terræ, et facti sunt sciniphes in hominibus, et in jumentis : omnis pulvis terræ versus est in sciniphes per totam terram Ægypti.17 But if you wil not let my people go, I shal send horseflies on you, on your officials, your subjects andyour houses. The Egyptians' houses wil swarm with horseflies, and so wil the very ground they stand on.
Feceruntque similiter malefici incantationibus suis, ut educerent sciniphes, et non potuerunt : erantque sciniphes tam in hominibus quam in jumentis.18 But I shal exempt the region of Goshen, where my people are living, that day; there will be nohorseflies there, so that you will know that I am Yahweh, here in this country.
Et dixerunt malefici ad Pharaonem : Digitus Dei est hic ; induratumque est cor Pharaonis, et non audivit eos sicut præceperat Dominus.
I shal make a distinction between my people and your people. This sign wil take place tomorrow." '
Dixit quoque Dominus ad Moysen : Consurge diluculo, et sta coram Pharaone : egredietur enim ad aquas : et dices ad eum : Hæc dicit Dominus : Dimitte populum meum ut sacrificet mihi.20 Yahweh did this, and great swarms of horseflies found their way into Pharaoh's palace, into hisofficials' houses and al over Egypt; the country was ruined by the horseflies.
Quod si non dimiseris eum, ecce ego immittam in te, et in servos tuos, et in populum tuum, et in domos tuas, omne genus muscarum : et implebuntur domus Ægyptiorum muscis diversi generis, et universa terra in qua fuerint.21 Pharaoh then summoned Moses and Aaron and said, 'Go and sacrifice to your God, inside thecountry.'
Faciamque mirabilem in die illa terram Gessen, in qua populus meus est, ut non sint ibi muscæ : et scias quoniam ego Dominus in medio terræ.22 'That would never do,' Moses said, 'since what we sacrifice to Yahweh our God is outrageous to theEgyptians. If the Egyptians see us offering sacrifices which outrage them, won't they stone us?
Ponamque divisionem inter populum meum et populum tuum : cras erit signum istud.23 We shal make a three-days' journey into the desert to sacrifice to Yahweh our God, as he has orderedus.'
Fecitque Dominus ita. Et venit musca gravissima in domos Pharaonis et servorum ejus, et in omnem terram Ægypti : corruptaque est terra ab hujuscemodi muscis.24 Pharaoh said, 'I wil let you go and sacrifice to Yahweh your God in the desert, provided you do not govery far. Pray for me.'
Vocavitque Pharao Moysen et Aaron, et ait eis : Ite et sacrificate Deo vestro in terra hac.25 'The moment I leave you,' Moses said, 'I shal pray to Yahweh. Tomorrow morning the horseflies willeave Pharaoh, his officials and his subjects. But Pharaoh must stop trifling with us by not al owing the people togo and sacrifice to Yahweh.'
Et ait Moyses : Non potest ita fieri : abominationes enim Ægyptiorum immolabimus Domino Deo nostro : quod si mactaverimus ea quæ colunt Ægyptii coram eis, lapidibus nos obruent.26 Moses then left Pharaoh's presence and prayed to Yahweh,
Viam trium dierum pergemus in solitudinem : et sacrificabimus Domino Deo nostro, sicut præcepit nobis.27 and Yahweh did as Moses asked; the horseflies left Pharaoh, his officials and his subjects; not oneremained.
Dixitque Pharao : Ego dimittam vos ut sacrificetis Domino Deo vestro in deserto : verumtamen longius ne abeatis, rogate pro me.28 But Pharaoh became obstinate this time too and did not let the people go.
At ait Moyses : Egressus a te, orabo Dominum : et recedet musca a Pharaone, et a servis suis, et a populo ejus cras : verumtamen noli ultra fallere, ut non dimittas populum sacrificare Domino.
Egressusque Moyses a Pharaone, oravit Dominum.
Qui fecit juxta verbum illius, et abstulit muscas a Pharaone, et a servis suis, et a populo ejus : non superfuit ne una quidem.
Et ingravatum est cor Pharaonis, ita ut nec hac quidem vice dimitteret populum.
