VULGATANEW JERUSALEM
Tunc Salomon ait : Dominus pollicitus est ut habitaret in caligine :1 Then Solomon said: Yahweh has chosen to dwel in thick cloud,
ego autem ædificavi domum nomini ejus, ut habitaret ibi in perpetuum.2 and I have built you a princely dwel ing, a residence for you for ever.
Et convertit rex faciem suam, et benedixit universæ multitudini Israël (nam omnis turba stabat intenta), et ait :3 Then the king turned round and blessed the whole assembly of Israel, while the whole assembly ofIsrael stood.
Benedictus Dominus Deus Israël, qui quod locutus est David patri meo, opere complevit, dicens :4 He said, 'Blessed be Yahweh, God of Israel, who has carried out by his hand what he promisedverbally to my father David, when he said,
A die qua eduxi populum meum de terra Ægypti, non elegi civitatem de cunctis tribubus Israël ut ædificaretur in ea domus nomini meo, neque elegi quemquam alium virum ut esset dux in populo Israël :5 "From the day I brought my people out of Egypt I chose no city, in any of the tribes of Israel, to have atemple built where my name should be, nor did I choose anyone to be prince of my people Israel;
sed elegi Jerusalem ut sit nomen meum in ea, et elegi David ut constituerem eum super populum meum Israël.6 but I did choose Jerusalem for my name to be there, and I did choose David to rule my people Israel."
Cumque fuisset voluntatis David patris mei ut ædificaret domum nomini Domini Dei Israël,7 My father David had set his heart on building a temple for the name of Yahweh, God of Israel,
dixit Dominus ad eum : Quia hæc fuit voluntas tua, ut ædificares domum nomini meo, bene quidem fecisti hujuscemodi habere voluntatem :8 but Yahweh said to my father David, "You have set your heart on building a temple for my name, and inthis you have done wel ;
sed non tu ædificabis domum : verum filius tuus, qui egredietur de lumbis tuis, ipse ædificabit domum nomini meo.9 and yet, you are not the man to build the temple; but your son, yet to be born to you, wil be the one tobuild the temple for my name."
Complevit ergo Dominus sermonem suum quem locutus fuerat : et ego surrexi pro David patre meo, et sedi super thronum Israël, sicut locutus est Dominus : et ædificavi domum nomini Domini Dei Israël.10 Yahweh has kept the promise which he made: I have succeeded my father David and am seated onthe throne of Israel, as Yahweh promised; I have built the temple for the name of Yahweh, God of Israel,
Et posui in ea arcam in qua est pactum Domini quod pepigit cum filiis Israël.
and I have placed in it the ark containing the covenant of Yahweh, which he made with the Israelites.'
Stetit ergo coram altari Domini ex adverso universæ multitudinis Israël, et extendit manus suas.12 Then in the presence of the whole assembly of Israel, he stood facing the altar of Yahweh andstretched out his hands-
Siquidem fecerat Salomon basim æneam, et posuerat eam in medio basilicæ, habentem quinque cubitos longitudinis, et quinque cubitos latitudinis, et tres cubitos altitudinis : stetitque super eam, et deinceps flexis genibus contra universam multitudinem Israël, et palmis in cælum levatis,13 for Solomon had made a bronze platform, five cubits long, five cubits wide and five cubits high, whichhe had placed in the middle of the court and on which he was standing; he knelt down in front of the wholeassembly of Israel, stretched out his hands to heaven-
ait : Domine Deus Israël, non est similis tui deus in cælo et in terra : qui custodis pactum et misericordiam cum servis tuis qui ambulant coram te in toto corde suo :14 and said, 'Yahweh, God of Israel, there is no god like you in heaven or on earth, you who are loyal tothe covenant and show faithful love to your servants as long as they walk wholeheartedly in your way.
qui præstitisti servo tuo David patri meo quæcumque locutus fueras ei : et quæ ore promiseras, opere complesti, sicut et præsens tempus probat.15 You have kept it with your servant, my father David, as you promised him you would. What youpromised verbally today you have carried out by your hand.
Nunc ergo Domine Deus Israël, imple servo tuo patri meo David quæcumque locutus es, dicens : Non deficiet ex te vir coram me, qui sedeat super thronum Israël : ita tamen si custodierint filii tui vias suas, et ambulaverint in lege mea, sicut et tu ambulasti coram me.16 And now, Yahweh, God of Israel, keep the promise which you made to your servant David when yousaid, "You wil never lack for a man to sit in my presence before me on the throne of Israel, provided that yoursons are careful how they behave, fol owing my law as you yourself have done."
Et nunc Domine Deus Israël, firmetur sermo tuus quem locutus es servo tuo David.17 So now, God of Israel, let the words come true which you spoke to your servant, my father David.
Ergone credibile est ut habitet Deus cum hominibus super terram ? si cælum et cæli cælorum non te capiunt, quanto magis domus ista quam ædificavi ?18 Yet wil God real y live with the people on earth? Why, the heavens and the heavens of the heavenscannot contain you! How much less this temple built by me!
Sed ad hoc tantum facta est, ut respicias orationem servi tui, et obsecrationem ejus, Domine Deus meus, et audias preces quas fundit famulus tuus coram te :19 Even so, listen favourably to the prayer and entreaty of your servant, Yahweh my God; listen to the cryand to the prayer which your servant makes to you:
ut aperias oculos tuos super domum istam diebus ac noctibus, super locum in quo pollicitus es ut invocaretur nomen tuum,20 Day and night, may your eyes watch over this temple, over this place in which you have promised toput your name. Listen to the prayer which your servant offers in this place.
et exaudires orationem quam servus tuus orat in eo : et exaudias preces famuli tui, et populi tui Israël. Quicumque oraverit in loco isto, exaudi de habitaculo tuo, id est, de cælis, et propitiare.
'Listen to the entreaties of your servant and of your people Israel; whenever they pray in this place,listen from the place where you reside in heaven; and when you hear, forgive.
Si peccaverit quispiam in proximum suum, et jurare contra eum paratus venerit, seque maledicto constrinxerit coram altari in domo ista :22 'If someone has wronged his neighbour and a curse is laid on him to make him swear here beforeyour altar in this Temple,
tu audies de cælo, et facies judicium servorum tuorum, ita ut reddas iniquo viam suam in caput proprium, et ulciscaris justum, retribuens ei secundum justitiam suam.23 then listen from heaven and do justice between your servants, paying back the guilty one by makinghim suffer for his conduct, and acquitting the upright by rewarding him as his uprightness deserves.
Si superatus fuerit populus tuus Israël ab inimicis (peccabunt enim tibi), et conversi egerint pœnitentiam, et obsecraverint nomen tuum, et fuerint deprecati in loco isto,24 'If your people Israel are defeated by the enemy because they have sinned against you, but thenreturn to you and acknowledge your name, and pray and seek your favour in this temple,
tu exaudies de cælo : et propitiare peccato populi tui Israël, et reduc eos in terram quam dedisti eis, et patribus eorum.25 then listen from heaven; forgive the sin of your people Israel, and bring them back to the countrywhich you gave to them and their ancestors.
Si clauso cælo pluvia non fluxerit propter peccata populi, et deprecati te fuerint in loco isto, et confessi nomini tuo, et conversi a peccatis suis, cum eos afflixeris,26 'When the heavens are shut and there is no rain because they have sinned against you, if they pray inthis place and praise your name and, having been humbled by you, desist from their sin,
exaudi de cælo, Domine, et dimitte peccata servis tuis et populi tui Israël, et doce eos viam bonam, per quam ingrediantur : et da pluviam terræ quam dedisti populo tuo ad possidendum.27 then listen from heaven and forgive the sin of your servant and of your people Israel -- for you areconstantly showing them the good way which they must fol ow -- and send rain on your country, which you havegiven to your people as their heritage.
Fames si orta fuerit in terra, et pestilentia, ærugo, et aurugo, et locusta, et bruchus : et hostes, vastatis regionibus, portas obsederint civitatis, omnisque plaga et infirmitas presserit :28 'Should there be famine in the country, or pestilence, wind-blast or mildew, locust or caterpil ar; shouldtheir enemy lay siege to their territory; should there be any plague or any disease;
si quis de populo tuo Israël fuerit deprecatus, cognoscens plagam et infirmitatem suam, et expanderit manus suas in domo hac,29 whatever be the prayer or entreaty of any individual, or of al your people Israel, each being aware ofhis own affliction and pain; when he stretches out his hands towards this Temple,
tu exaudies de cælo, de sublimi scilicet habitaculo tuo : et propitiare, et redde unicuique secundum vias suas, quas nosti eum habere in corde suo (tu enim solus nosti corda filiorum hominum) :30 then listen from heaven where you reside; forgive and, since you know what is in his heart, deal witheach as his conduct deserves -- for you alone know what is in the human heart-
ut timeant te, et ambulent in viis tuis cunctis diebus quibus vivunt super faciem terræ quam dedisti patribus nostris.31 so that they may revere you by following your directions, which you gave to our ancestors, throughouttheir lives on earth.
Externum quoque, qui non est de populo tuo Israël, si venerit de terra longinqua propter nomen tuum magnum, et propter manum tuam robustam, et brachium tuum extentum, et adoraverit in loco isto,32 'Even the foreigner, not belonging to your people Israel but coming from a distant country, attracted byyour great name, your mighty hand and outstretched arm, if he comes and prays in this Temple,
tu exaudies de cælo firmissimo habitaculo tuo, et facies cuncta pro quibus invocaverit te ille peregrinus : ut sciant omnes populi terræ nomen tuum, et timeant te sicut populus tuus Israël, et cognoscant quia nomen tuum invocatum est super domum hanc quam ædificavi.33 then listen from heaven where you reside, and grant al that the foreigner asks of you, so that al thepeoples of the earth may acknowledge your name and, like your people Israel, revere you, and know that thisTemple, which I have built, bears your name.
Si egressus fuerit populus tuus ad bellum contra adversarios suos per viam in qua miseris eos, adorabunt te contra viam in qua civitas hæc est, quam elegisti, et domus quam ædificavi nomini tuo,34 'If your people go out to war against their enemies, on whatever mission you send them, and they prayto you, turning towards this city which you have chosen and towards the Temple which I have built for yourname,
tu exaudies de cælo preces eorum, et obsecrationem : et ulciscaris.
then listen from heaven to their prayer and their entreaty, and uphold their cause.
Si autem peccaverint tibi (neque enim est homo qui non peccet), et iratus fueris eis, et tradideris hostibus, et captivos duxerint eos in terram longinquam, vel certe quæ juxta est,36 'When they sin against you -- for there is no one who does not sin -- and you are angry with them andabandon them to the enemy, and their captors carry them off to a country be it far away or near,
et conversi in corde suo in terra ad quam captivi ducti fuerant, egerint pœnitentiam, et deprecati te fuerint in terra captivitatis suæ, dicentes : Peccavimus : inique fecimus, injuste egimus :37 if they come to their senses in the country to which they have been taken as captives and pray to youonce again in the country of their captivity, saying, "We have sinned, we have acted wrongly and wickedly,"
et reversi fuerint ad te in toto corde suo, et in tota anima sua, in terra captivitatis suæ ad quam ducti sunt, adorabunt te contra viam terræ suæ, quam dedisti patribus eorum, et urbis quam elegisti, et domus quam ædificavi nomini tuo :38 and turn back to you with al their heart and soul in the country of their captivity to which they havebeen carried away as captives, and pray, turning towards the country which you gave to their ancestors, towardsthe city you have chosen, and towards the Temple which I have built for your name,
tu exaudies de cælo, hoc est, de firmo habitaculo tuo, preces eorum : et facias judicium, et dimittas populo tuo, quamvis peccatori :39 then listen from heaven where you reside, hear their prayer and entreaties, uphold their cause andforgive your people for having sinned against you.
tu es enim Deus meus : aperiantur, quæso, oculi tui, et aures tuæ intentæ sint ad orationem quæ fit in loco isto.40 'Now, O my God, may your eyes be open and your ears attentive to prayer offered in this place.
Nunc igitur consurge, Domine Deus, in requiem tuam, tu et arca fortitudinis tuæ : sacerdotes tui, Domine Deus, induantur salutem, et sancti tui lætentur in bonis.41 And now Yahweh God, go up to your resting-place, you and your fortress, the Ark! Let your priests,Yahweh God, be robed in salvation, let your faithful rejoice in what is good!
Domine Deus, ne averteris faciem christi tui : memento misericordiarum David servi tui.42 Yahweh God, do not rebuff your Anointed -- remember the faithful love of your servant David!'
