VULGATANEW JERUSALEM
Azarias autem filius Oded, facto in se spiritu Dei,1 The spirit of God then came on Azariah son of Oded;
egressus est in occursum Asa, et dixit ei : Audite me, Asa, et omnis Juda et Benjamin : Dominus vobiscum, quia fuistis cum eo. Si quæsieritis eum, invenietis : si autem dereliqueritis eum, derelinquet vos.2 he went out to meet Asa and said, 'Listen to me, Asa, and all you in Judah and in Benjamin: Yahwehwil be with you so long as you are with him. If you seek him, he will let you find him; but if you desert him, he wildesert you.
Transibant autem multi dies in Israël absque Deo vero, et absque sacerdote doctore, et absque lege.3 For a long time Israel did not have the true God or a teacher-priest or a law,
Cumque reversi fuerint in angustia sua ad Dominum Deum Israël, et quæsierint eum, reperient eum.4 but when in their distress they turned to Yahweh, God of Israel, and sought him, he let them find him.
In tempore illo, non erit pax egredienti et ingredienti, sed terrores undique in cunctis habitatoribus terrarum :5 In those times there was no security for people as they went about their business, but great unrestaffecting the inhabitants of all countries,
pugnavit enim gens contra gentem, et civitas contra civitatem, quia Dominus conturbabit eos in omni angustia.6 nation being crushed by nation and city by city, since God caused confusion among them by everykind of distress.
Vos ergo confortamini, et non dissolvantur manus vestræ : erit enim merces operi vestro.7 So be strong, do not be discouraged, for your deeds wil be rewarded.'
When Asa heard these words and the prophecy, he took courage and removed the abominable idolsthroughout the land of Judah and Benjamin as wel as from the towns which he had captured in the highlands ofEphraim, and repaired the altar of Yahweh which stood in front of the portico of Yahweh.
Congregavitque universum Judam et Benjamin, et advenas cum eis de Ephraim, et de Manasse, et de Simeon : plures enim ad eum confugerant ex Israël, videntes quod Dominus Deus illius esset cum eo.9 He summoned al Judah and Benjamin as wel as those Ephraimites, Manassehites and Simeoniteswho had settled with them -- for a great many people from Israel had gone over to Asa when they saw thatYahweh his God was with him.
Cumque venissent in Jerusalem mense tertio, anno decimoquinto regni Asa,10 They assembled in Jerusalem in the third month of the fifteenth year of Asa's reign,
immolaverunt Domino in die illa de manubiis et præda quam adduxerant, boves septingentos, et arietes septem millia.11 that day sacrificing to Yahweh seven hundred oxen and seven thousand sheep from the booty whichthey had brought back.
Et intravit ex more ad corroborandum fœdus ut quærerent Dominum Deum patrum suorum in toto corde, et in tota anima sua.12 They then made a covenant to seek Yahweh, God of their ancestors, with al their heart and soul;
Si quis autem, inquit, non quæsierit Dominum Deum Israël, moriatur, a minimo usque ad maximum, a viro usque ad mulierem.13 anyone who would not seek Yahweh, God of Israel, was to be put to death, whether high or low, manor woman.
Juraveruntque Domino voce magna in jubilo, et in clangore tubæ, et in sonitu buccinarum,14 They pledged their oath to Yahweh in ringing tones, with shouts of joy, to the sound of trumpet andhorn;
omnes qui erant in Juda, cum execratione : in omni enim corde suo juraverunt, et in tota voluntate quæsierunt eum, et invenerunt : præstititque eis Dominus requiem per circuitum.15 al Judah rejoiced over the oath, for they had sworn it wholeheartedly, and sought him so earnestlythat he al owed them to find him; Yahweh gave them peace all round.
Sed et Maacham matrem Asa regis ex augusto deposuit imperio, eo quod fecisset in luco simulacrum Priapi : quod omne contrivit, et in frustra comminuens combussit in torrente Cedron.16 King Asa even deprived his mother Maacah of the dignity of Great Lady for having made anobscenity for Asherah; Asa cut down her obscenity, smashed it and burnt it in the ravine of the Kidron.
Excelsa autem derelicta sunt in Israël : attamen cor Asa erat perfectum cunctis diebus ejus,17 Though the high places were not abolished in Israel, Asa's heart was loyal throughout his life.
eaque quæ voverat pater suus, et ipse, intulit in domum Domini, argentum, et aurum, vasorumque diversam supellectilem.18 He deposited his father's and his own dedicated gifts of silver, gold and sacred vessels, in theTemple of Yahweh.
Bellum vero non fuit usque ad trigesimum quintum annum regni Asa.19 Up to the thirty-fifth year of Asa's reign there was no war.
