VULGATANEW AMERICAN BIBLE
Factum est autem post anni circulum, eo tempore quo solent reges ad bella procedere, congregavit Joab exercitum, et robur militiæ, et vastavit terram filiorum Ammon : perrexitque et obsedit Rabba. Porro David manebat in Jerusalem, quando Joab percussit Rabba et destruxit eam.1 At the beginning of the following year, the time when kings go to war, Joab led the army out in force, laid waste the land of the Ammonites, and went on to besiege Rabbah, while David himself remained in Jerusalem. When Joab had attacked Rabbah and destroyed it,
Tulit autem David coronam Melchom de capite ejus, et invenit in ea auri pondo talentum, et pretiosissimas gemmas, fecitque sibi inde diadema : manubias quoque urbis plurimas tulit ;2 David took the crown of Milcom from the idol's head. It was found to weigh a talent of gold; and it contained precious stones, which David wore on his own head. He also brought out a great amount of booty from the city.
populum autem, qui erat in ea, eduxit, et fecit super eos tribulas, et trahas, et ferrata carpenta transire, ita ut dissecarentur et contererentur. Sic fecit David cunctis urbibus filiorum Ammon : et reversus est cum omni populo suo in Jerusalem.3 He deported the people of the city and set them to work with saws, iron picks, and axes. Thus David dealt with all the cities of the Ammonites. Then he and his whole army returned to Jerusalem.
Post hæc initum est bellum in Gazer adversum Philisthæos, in quo percussit Sobochai Husathites, Saphai de genere Raphaim, et humiliavit eos.4 Afterward there was another battle with the Philistines, at Gezer. At that time, Sibbecai the Hushathite slew Sippai, one of the descendants of the Raphaim, and the Philistines were subdued.
Aliud quoque bellum gestum est adversus Philisthæos, in quo percussit Adeodatus filius Saltus Bethlehemites fratrem Goliath Gethæi, cujus hastæ lignum erat quasi liciatorium texentium.5 Once again there was war with the Philistines, and Elhanan, the son of Jair, slew Lahmi, the brother of Goliath of Gath, whose spear shaft was like a weaver's heddle-bar.
Sed et aliud bellum accidit in Geth, in quo fuit homo longissimus, senos habens digitos, id est, simul viginti quatuor : qui et ipse de Rapha fuerat stirpe generatus.6 In still another battle, at Gath, they encountered a giant, also a descendant of the Raphaim, who had six fingers to each hand and six toes to each foot; twenty-four in all.
Hic blasphemavit Israël : et percussit eum Jonathan filius Samaa fratris David. Hi sunt filii Rapha in Geth, qui ceciderunt in manu David et servorum ejus.7 He defied Israel, and Jonathan, the son of Shimea, David's brother, slew him.
These were the descendants of the Raphaim of Gath who died at the hands of David and his servants.
