Hi quoque venerunt ad David in Siceleg, cum adhuc fugeret Saul filium Cis, qui erant fortissimi et egregii pugnatores,1 These are the men who rallied to David at Ziklag while he was stil being kept away from Saul son ofKish; they were among the champions, the warriors.
tendentes arcum, et utraque manu fundis saxa jacientes, et dirigentes sagittas, de fratribus Saul ex Benjamin.2 They were equipped with bows and could sling stones or shoot arrows from the bow with either righthand or left. Of Saul's fellow-tribesmen from Benjamin:
Princeps Ahiecer, et Joas filii Samaa Gabaathites, et Jaziel, et Phallet filii Azmoth, et Baracha, et Jehu Anathotites.3 Ahiezer the leader, and Joash, sons of Hassemar of Gibeah, Jeziel and Peleth, sons of Azmaveth,Berachah and Jehu of Anathoth,
Jeremias, et Jeheziel, et Johanan, et Jezabad Gaderothites.4 Ishmaiah of Gibeon, one of the champions in the Thirty and commander of the Thirty,

Elkanah, Isshiah, Azarel, Joezer and Jashobeam the Korahites,
Sed et de Gaddi transfugerunt ad David cum lateret in deserto, viri robustissimi, et pugnatores optimi, tenentes clypeum et hastam : facies eorum quasi facies leonis, et veloces quasi capreæ in montibus :8 Joelah, Zebadiah, sons of Jeroham of Gedor.
Ezer princeps, Obdias secundus, Eliab tertius,9 From the Gadites, some good, capable fighting men defected and came to David at the stronghold inthe desert -- al skil ed with shield and spear, fierce as lions and nimble as mountain gazel es.
Masmana quartus, Jeremias quintus,10 Ezer was the leader, Obadiah second, Eliab third,
Ethi sextus, Eliel septimus,11 Mishmannah fourth, Jeremiah fifth,
Johanan octavus, Elzebad nonus,12 Attai sixth, Eliel seventh,
Jeremias decimus, Machbanai undecimus.13 Johanan eighth, Elzabad ninth,
These Gadites were the leaders of the troops, the least of them a match for a hundred men and thegreatest a match for a thousand.
Venerunt autem et de Benjamin et de Juda ad præsidium in quo morabatur David.16 These were the men who once crossed the Jordan in the first month, when it had overflowed itsbanks and had driven out al the lowlanders to east and west.
When David came forward to meet them, he responded to them by saying, 'If you have come to mewith peaceful intent to help me, you will find me a good friend. But if it is to betray me to my enemies, seeing thatI have done nothing wrong, may the God of our ancestors take note and condemn you.'
Porro de Manasse transfugerunt ad David, quando veniebat cum Philisthiim adversus Saul ut pugnaret : et non dimicavit cum eis, quia inito consilio remiserunt eum principes Philisthinorum, dicentes : Periculo capitis nostri revertetur ad dominum suum Saul.19 Then the Spirit invested Amasai the leader of the Thirty: 'We are your men, David; with you, son ofJesse! Peace be with you, peace be with you; peace be with those who help you! For your God has helped you!'And David accepted them, including them among his more senior officers.
Quando igitur reversus est in Siceleg, transfugerunt ad eum de Manasse, Ednas, et Jozabad, et Jedihel, et Michaël, et Ednas, et Jozabad, et Eliu, et Salathi, principes millium in Manasse.20 Some Manassehites also defected to David as he was setting out with the Philistines to fight Saul.But he did not help the Philistines because, after consultation, their chiefs sent him away, saying, 'He wil defectto his master Saul and it wil cost us our heads!'
He was on his way to Ziklag when these Manassehites deserted to him: Adnah, Jozabad, Jediael,Michael, Jozabad, Elihu, Zil ethai, chiefs of thousands in Manasseh.
They helped David and his band, since they were al men of standing and became officers in thearmy.
Iste quoque est numerus principum exercitus qui venerunt ad David cum esset in Hebron, ut transferrent regnum Saul ad eum, juxta verbum Domini.23 Indeed reinforcements reached David day after day, so that his camp grew into a camp of prodigioussize.
Filii Juda portantes clypeum et hastam, sex millia octingenti expediti ad prælium.24 These are the numbers of ful y armed men who joined David at Hebron to transfer Saul's kingdom tohim in accordance with the order of Yahweh:
De filiis Simeon virorum fortissimorum ad pugnandum, septem millia centum.25 Judahites carrying shield and spear: six thousand eight hundred ful y armed warriors;
De filiis Levi, quatuor millia sexcenti.26 Simeonites; seven thousand one hundred champions valiant in war;
Sadoc etiam puer egregiæ indolis, et domus patris ejus, principes viginti duo.28 in addition to Jehoiada, in command of the Aaronites, with three thousand seven hundred of these,
De filiis autem Benjamin fratribus Saul, tria millia : magna enim pars eorum adhuc sequebatur domum Saul.29 Zadok, a young and valiant champion, and twenty-two commanders of his family;
Porro de filiis Ephraim viginti millia octingenti, fortissimi robore, viri nominati in cognationibus suis.30 Benjaminites: three thousand kinsmen of Saul, most of them hitherto in the service of the House ofSaul;
Et ex dimidia tribu Manasse, decem et octo millia, singuli per nomina sua, venerunt ut constituerent regem David.31 Ephraimites: twenty thousand eight hundred valiant champions, men famous in their families;
De filiis quoque Issachar viri eruditi, qui noverant singula tempora ad præcipiendum quid facere deberet Israël, principes ducenti : omnis autem reliqua tribus eorum consilium sequebatur.32 of the half-tribe of Manasseh: eighteen thousand men assigned by name to go and proclaim Davidking;
Porro de Zabulon qui egrediebantur ad prælium, et stabant in acie instructi armis bellicis, quinquaginta millia venerunt in auxilium, non in corde duplici.33 Issacharites, sound judges of the times when Israel should take action, and the way to do it: twohundred chiefs and al their kinsmen under their command;
Et de Nephthali, principes mille, et cum eis instructi clypeo et hasta, triginta et septem millia.34 Zebulunites: fifty thousand men fit for service, marshalled for battle, with warlike weapons of everykind, staunch-hearted auxiliaries;
De Dan etiam præparati ad prælium, viginti octo millia sexcenti.35 Naphtalites: a thousand commanders, and with them thirty-seven thousand men armed with shieldand spear;
Et de Aser egredientes ad pugnam, et in acie provocantes, quadraginta millia.36 Danites: twenty-eight thousand six hundred men marshal ed for battle;
Trans Jordanem autem de filiis Ruben, et de Gad, et dimidia parte tribus Manasse, instructi armis bellicis, centum viginti millia.37 Asherites: forty thousand men fit for service, marshalled for battle;
Omnes isti viri bellatores expediti ad pugnandum, corde perfecto venerunt in Hebron, ut constituerent regem David super universum Israël : sed et omnes reliqui ex Israël uno corde erant, ut rex fieret David.38 from Transjordan: a hundred and twenty thousand men of Reuben, Gad and the half-tribe ofManasseh, with warlike weapons of every kind.
Fueruntque ibi apud David tribus diebus comedentes et bibentes : præparaverant enim eis fratres sui.39 Al these warriors in battle array came to David at Hebron with the firm determination of makingDavid king of al Israel; and the rest of Israel, too, was of one mind in wanting to make David king.
Sed et qui juxta eos erant, usque ad Issachar, et Zabulon, et Nephthali, afferebant panes in asinis, et camelis, et mulis, et bobus ad vescendum : farinam, palathas, uvam passam, vinum, oleum, boves, arietes ad omnem copiam : gaudium quippe erat in Israël.40 For three days they stayed there with David, eating and drinking, their fellow-tribesmen having madepreparations for them;
their neighbours too, from as far away as Issachar and Zebulun and Naphtali, came bringing food ondonkeys, camels, mules and oxen-supplies of flour, fig cakes, bunches of raisins, wine, oil, quantities of oxenand sheep -- for there was joy in Israel.
