VULGATANEW JERUSALEM
In tempore illo ægrotavit Abia filius Jeroboam.1 At that time Abijah, Jeroboam's son, fel sick,
Dixitque Jeroboam uxori suæ : Surge, et commuta habitum, ne cognoscaris quod sis uxor Jeroboam, et vade in Silo, ubi est Ahias propheta, qui locutus est mihi quod regnaturus essem super populum hunc.2 and Jeroboam said to his wife, 'Come, please disguise yourself so that no one will recognise you asJeroboam's wife, and go to Shiloh; the prophet Ahijah is there, the man who said I was to be king of this people.
Tolle quoque in manu tua decem panes, et crustulam, et vas mellis, et vade ad illum : ipse enim indicabit tibi quid eventurum sit puero huic.3 Go to him, and take ten loaves and some savoury food and a jar of honey; he wil tell you what wilhappen to the child.'
Fecit ut dixerat, uxor Jeroboam : et consurgens abiit in Silo, et venit in domum Ahiæ : at ille non poterat videre, quia caligaverant oculi ejus præ senectute.4 Jeroboam's wife did this: she set out, went to Shiloh and came to Ahijah's house.
Cum ergo illa intraret, et dissimularet se esse quæ erat,5 Now Ahijah could not see, his eyes were fixed with age, but Yahweh had told him, 'Jeroboam's wife isnow on her way to ask you for a prophecy about her son, as he is sick. You wil tel her such and such. Whenshe comes, she wil pretend to be some other woman.'
So when Ahijah heard her footsteps at the door, he cal ed, 'Come in, wife of Jeroboam; why pretend tobe someone else? I have bad news for you.
Vade, et dic Jeroboam : Hæc dicit Dominus Deus Israël : Quia exaltavi te de medio populi, et dedi te ducem super populum meum Israël,7 Go and tell Jeroboam, "Yahweh, God of Israel, says this: I raised you from the people and made youleader of my people Israel;
et scidi regnum domus David, et dedi illud tibi, et non fuisti sicut servus meus David, qui custodivit mandata mea, et secutus est me in toto corde suo, faciens quod placitum esset in conspectu meo :8 I tore the kingdom from the House of David and gave it to you. But you have not been like my servantDavid who kept my commandments and followed me with al his heart, doing only what I regard as right;
sed operatus es mala super omnes qui fuerunt ante te, et fecisti tibi deos alienos et conflatiles, ut me ad iracundiam provocares, me autem projecisti post corpus tuum :9 you have done more evil than all your predecessors, you have gone and made yourself other gods,idols of cast metal, provoking my anger, and you have turned your back on me.
idcirco ecce ego inducam mala super domum Jeroboam, et percutiam de Jeroboam mingentem ad parietem, et clausum, et novissimum in Israël : et mundabo reliquias domus Jeroboam, sicut mundari solet fimus usque ad purum.10 For this I shal bring disaster on the House of Jeroboam, I shal wipe out every manjack of the familyof Jeroboam, fettered or free in Israel, I shal sweep away the House of Jeroboam as a man sweeps dung awaytill none is left.
Those of Jeroboam's family who die in the city, the dogs wil eat; and those who die in the opencountry, the birds of the air wil eat, for Yahweh has spoken."
Tu igitur surge, et vade in domum tuam : et in ipso introitu pedum tuorum in urbem, morietur puer,12 Now get up and go home; at the moment your feet enter the town, the child will die.
et planget eum omnis Israël, et sepeliet : iste enim solus inferetur de Jeroboam in sepulchrum, quia inventus est super eo sermo bonus a Domino Deo Israël in domo Jeroboam.13 Al Israel wil mourn for him, and bury him; and he alone of Jeroboam's family will have a properburial, for in him alone of the House of Jeroboam can Yahweh, God of Israel, find anything good.
Constituet autem sibi Dominus regem super Israël, qui percutiet domum Jeroboam in hac die, et in hoc tempore :14 Yahweh wil set a king over Israel, who will put an end to the House of Jeroboam.
et percutiet Dominus Deus Israël, sicut moveri solet arundo in aqua : et evellet Israël de terra bona hac, quam dedit patribus eorum, et ventilabit eos trans flumen : quia fecerunt sibi lucos, ut irritarent Dominum.15 Yahweh wil make Israel shake, til it quivers like a reed in the water; he will uproot Israel from thisprosperous land which he gave to their ancestors and scatter them beyond the River for provoking Yahweh toanger by making their sacred poles.
Et tradet Dominus Israël propter peccata Jeroboam, qui peccavit, et peccare fecit Israël.16 He wil abandon Israel for the sins which Jeroboam has committed and made Israel commit.'
Surrexit itaque uxor Jeroboam, et abiit, et venit in Thersa : cumque illa ingrederetur limen domus, puer mortuus est,17 Jeroboam's wife rose and left. She arrived at Tirzah, and when she crossed the threshold of thepalace, the child was already dead.
et sepelierunt eum. Et planxit eum omnis Israël juxta sermonem Domini, quem locutus est in manu servi sui Ahiæ prophetæ.
They buried him, and al Israel mourned for him, just as Yahweh had foretold through his servantAhijah the prophet.
The rest of the history of Jeroboam, what wars he waged, how he governed, this is recorded in theBook of the Annals of the Kings of Israel.
Jeroboam's reign lasted twenty-two years. Then he fel asleep with his ancestors; his son Nadabsucceeded him.
Porro Roboam filius Salomonis regnavit in Juda. Nomen autem matris ejus Naama Ammanitis.21 In Judah, Rehoboam son of Solomon became king; he was forty-one years old when he came to thethrone and he reigned for seventeen years in Jerusalem, the city which Yahweh had chosen out of al the tribesof Israel, to give his name a home there. His mother's name was Naamah, the Ammonite.
Et fecit Judas malum coram Domino, et irritaverunt eum super omnibus quæ fecerant patres eorum in peccatis suis quæ peccaverunt.22 He did what is displeasing to Yahweh, arousing his resentment more than his ancestors by al the sinswhich they had committed;
Ædificaverunt enim et ipsi sibi aras, et statuas, et lucos super omnem collem excelsum, et subter omnem arborem frondosam :23 they had built themselves high places, and had set up pil ars and sacred poles on every high hil andunder every spreading tree.
sed et effeminati fuerunt in terra, feceruntque omnes abominationes gentium quas attrivit Dominus ante faciem filiorum Israël.24 There were even male sacred prostitutes in the country. He copied all the shameful practices of thenations whom Yahweh had dispossessed for the Israelites.
In quinto autem anno regni Roboam, ascendit Sesac rex Ægypti in Jerusalem,25 And so it happened that in the fifth year of King Rehoboam, Shishak king of Egypt advanced onJerusalem
et tulit thesauros domus Domini, et thesauros regios, et universa diripuit : scuta quoque aurea, quæ fecerat Salomon :26 and carried off all the treasures of the Temple of Yahweh and the treasures of the royal palace; hetook everything away, including al the golden shields which Solomon had made.
To replace those King Rehoboam made bronze shields, entrusting them to the commanders of theguard who guarded the king's palace gate.
Cumque ingrederetur rex in domum Domini, portabant ea qui præeundi habebant officium : et postea reportabant ad armamentarium scutariorum.28 Whenever the king went to the Temple of Yahweh, the guards would carry them, returning them to theguardroom afterwards.
The rest of the history of Rehoboam, his entire career, is this not recorded in the Book of the Annalsof the Kings of Judah?
Fuitque bellum inter Roboam et Jeroboam cunctis diebus.30 Warfare between Rehoboam and Jeroboam went on throughout the period.
When Rehoboam fel asleep with his ancestors, he was buried in the City of David; his son Abijamsucceeded him.
