1 Quando Gesù ebbe finito di dare i suoi avvertimenti ai suoi dodici discepoli, si mosse di là per insegnare e predicare nelle loro città.	1 And it came to pass, when Jesus had made an end of commanding his twelve disciples, he departed thence to teach and to preach in their cities.
2 Or Giovanni, quando venne a sapere, in prigione, le opere del Cristo, per mezzo dei suoi discepoli	2 Now when John had heard in the prison the works of Christ, he sent two of his disciples,
3 mandò a dirgli: "Sei tu colui che deve venire o dobbiamo aspettare un altro?".	3 And said unto him, Art thou he that should come, or do we look for another?
4 Gesù rispose loro: "Andate e annunziate a Giovanni ciò che udite e vedete:	4 Jesus answered and said unto them, Go and shew John again those things which ye do hear and see:
5 i ciechi vedono, gli zoppi camminano, i lebbrosi sono mondati, i sordi odono, i morti risorgono e ai poveri viene annunziata la buona novella.	5 The blind receive their sight, and the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, and the poor have the gospel preached to them.
6 Beato è colui che non si scandalizza di me!".	6 And blessed is he, whosoever shall not be offended in me.
7 Mentre quelli se ne andavano, Gesù si mise a parlare di Giovanni alle folle: "Che cosa siete andati a vedere nel deserto? Una canna sbattuta dal vento?	7 And as they departed, Jesus began to say unto the multitudes concerning John, What went ye out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken with the wind?
8 Ma che cosa siete andati a vedere? Un uomo avvolto in morbide vesti? Ecco: coloro che indossano morbide vesti dimorano nei palazzi dei re.	8 But what went ye out for to see? A man clothed in soft raiment? behold, they that wear soft clothing are in kings' houses.
9 Ma perché siete andati? A vedere un profeta? Sì, vi dico, e più che un profeta.	9 But what went ye out for to see? A prophet? yea, I say unto you, and more than a prophet.
10 Di lui sta scritto: Ecco io mando avanti a te il mio messaggero, egli preparerà dinanzi a te la tua via.	10 For this is he, of whom it is written, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, which shall prepare thy way before thee.
11 In verità vi dico: fra i nati di donna non è mai sorto uno più grande di Giovanni il Battista. Ma il più piccolo nel regno dei cieli è più grande di lui.	11 Verily I say unto you, Among them that are born of women there hath not risen a greater than John the Baptist: notwithstanding he that is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.
12 Dal tempo di Giovanni il Battista fino ad ora il regno dei cieli è oggetto di violenza, e i violenti vogliono impadronirsene.	12 And from the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven suffereth violence, and the violent take it by force.
13 Infatti tutti i profeti e la legge fino a Giovanni l'hanno annunziato.	13 For all the prophets and the law prophesied until John.
14 E se volete capirlo, egli è l'Elia che deve venire.	14 And if ye will receive it, this is Elias, which was for to come.
15 Chi ha orecchi, intenda!".	15 He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.
16 "A chi paragonerò questa generazione? E' simile a ragazzi che stanno nelle piazze e rivolti ai compagni	16 But whereunto shall I liken this generation? It is like unto children sitting in the markets, and calling unto their fellows,
17 dicono: "Abbiamo per voi suonato e non avete danzato; abbiamo intonato lamenti e non avete pianto".	17 And saying, We have piped unto you, and ye have not danced; we have mourned unto you, and ye have not lamented.
18 E' venuto Giovanni che non mangiava né beveva, e si diceva: "E' indemoniato".	18 For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, He hath a devil.
19 E' venuto il Figlio dell'uomo che mangia e beve, e si dice: "E' un mangione e un beone, amico di pubblicani e peccatori!". Ma alla Sapienza è stata resa giustizia dalle sue opere".	19 The Son of man came eating and drinking, and they say, Behold a man gluttonous, and a winebibber, a friend of publicans and sinners. But wisdom is justified of her children.
20 Allora cominciò a inveire contro le città in cui aveva compiuto la maggior parte dei miracoli, perché non si erano convertite:	20 Then began he to upbraid the cities wherein most of his mighty works were done, because they repented not:
21 "Guai a te, Corazìn! Guai a te, Betsàida! Poiché, se i prodigi che sono stati compiuti in mezzo a voi fossero stati fatti a Tiro e Sidone, da tempo in cilicio e cenere avrebbero fatto penitenza.	21 Woe unto thee, Chorazin! woe unto thee, Bethsaida! for if the mighty works, which were done in you, had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes.
22 Ebbene, vi dico che nel giorno del giudizio la sorte che toccherà a Tiro e Sidone sarà più mite della vostra.	22 But I say unto you, It shall be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon at the day of judgment, than for you.
23 E tu, Cafarnao, sarai forse innalzata fino al cielo? Sino agli inferi sarai precipitata. Poiché, se a Sodoma fossero stati compiuti i prodigi che si sono compiuti in te, sarebbe rimasta fino ad oggi.	23 And thou, Capernaum, which art exalted unto heaven, shalt be brought down to hell: for if the mighty works, which have been done in thee, had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until this day.
24 Ebbene, vi dico che nel giorno del giudizio la sorte che toccherà alla terra di Sodoma sarà più mite della tua".	24 But I say unto you, That it shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom in the day of judgment, than for thee.
25 In quell'occasione Gesù prese a dire: "Mi compiaccio con te, o Padre, Signore del cielo e della terra, che hai tenuto nascoste queste cose ai sapienti e ai saggi e le hai rivelate ai semplici.	25 At that time Jesus answered and said, I thank thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them unto babes.
26 Sì, Padre, poiché tale è stato il tuo beneplacito.	26 Even so, Father: for so it seemed good in thy sight.
27 Tutto mi è stato dato dal Padre mio: nessuno conosce il Figlio se non il Padre e nessuno conosce il Padre se non il Figlio e colui al quale il Figlio voglia rivelarlo.	27 All things are delivered unto me of my Father: and no man knoweth the Son, but the Father; neither knoweth any man the Father, save the Son, and he to whomsoever the Son will reveal him.
28 Venite a me, voi tutti che siete affaticati e stanchi, e io vi darò sollievo.	28 Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
29 Portate su di voi il mio giogo e imparate da me che sono mite e umile di cuore; e troverete ristoro per le vostre anime.	29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.
30 Poiché il mio giogo è soave e leggero è il mio peso!".	30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.
