1 In quei giorni venne a conoscenza di questi fatti Giuditta, figlia di Merari, figlio di Oks, figlio di Giuseppe, figlio di Oziel, figlio di Elkia, figlio di Anania, figlio di Gedeone, figlio di Rafain, figlio di Achitob, figlio di Elia, figlio di Chelkia, figlio di Eliàb, figlio di Natanaèl, figlio di Salamiel, figlio di Sarasadai, figlio d'Israele.	1 Now it came to pass, when Judith a widow had heard these words, who was the daughter of Merari, the son of Idox, the son of Joseph, the son of Ozias, the son of Elai, the son of Jamnor, the son of Gedeon, the son of Raphaim, the son of Achitob, the son of Melehias, the son of Enan, the son of Nathanias, the son of Salathiel, the son of Simeon, the son of Ruben:
2 Suo marito era stato Manasse, della stessa tribù e della stessa famiglia di lei; egli era morto al tempo della mietitura dell'orzo.	2 And her husband was Manasses, who died in the time of the barley harvest:
3 Stava infatti sorvegliando quelli che legavano i covoni nella campagna, quando fu colpito da un'insolazione al capo; dovette adagiarsi sul letto e morì in Betulia, sua città. Lo seppellirono con i suoi padri nel campo tra Dotain e Balamon.	3 For he was standing over them that bound sheaves in the field ; and the heat came upon his head, and he died in Bethulia his own city, and was buried there with his fathers.
4 Giuditta, rimasta vedova, viveva nella sua casa da tre anni e quattro mesi.	4 And Judith his relict was a widow now three years and six months.
5 Si era fatta costruire una tenda sul terrazzo della propria casa, aveva cinto i suoi fianchi di sacco e portava gli abiti della vedovanza.	5 And she made herself a private chamber in the upper part of her house, in which she abode shut up with her maids.
6 Digiunava tutti i giorni, da quando era vedova, eccettuate le vigilie dei sabati e i sabati, le vigilie dei noviluni e i noviluni, le feste e i giorni di letizia per il popolo d'Israele.	6 And she wore haircloth upon her loins, and fasted all the days of her life, except the sabbaths, and new moons, and the feasts of the house of Israel.

8 Non c'era nessuno che potesse dir male sul suo conto, perché temeva grandemente Dio.	8 And she was greatly renowned among all, because she feared the Lord very much, neither was there any one that spoke an ill word of her.
9 Ella dunque venne a conoscenza delle esasperate parole che il popolo aveva rivolto ai capi, perché s'erano scoraggiati per la penuria d'acqua, e venne pure a conoscere tutte le risposte che aveva dato loro Ozia, come egli avesse giurato loro di consegnare la città agli Assiri dopo cinque giorni.	9 When therefore she had heard that Ozias had promised that he would deliver up the city after the fifth day, she sent to the ancients Chabri and Charmi.
10 Allora mandò la sua ancella preposta all'amministrazione di tutte le sue sostanze a chiamare Cabri e Carmi, gli anziani della sua città.	10 And they came to her, and she said to them: What is this word, by which Ozias hath consented to give up the city to the Assyrians, if within five days there come no aid to us?
11 Giunti che furono presso di lei, disse loro: "Ascoltatemi, o capi degli abitanti di Betulia! Non è stato opportuno il discorso che avete fatto oggi davanti al popolo, interponendo questo giuramento pronunciato tra Dio e voi di consegnare la città ai nostri nemici, se nel frattempo il Signore non vi viene in aiuto.	11 And who are you that tempt the Lord?
12 Ora, chi siete voi, che avete tentato Dio in mezzo ai figli degli uomini?	12 This is not a word that may draw down mercy, but rather that may stir up wrath, and enkindle indignation.
13 Ora voi volete mettere alla prova il Signore onnipotente, ma non comprenderete nulla mai.	13 You have set a time for the mercy of the Lord, and you have appointed him a day, according to your pleasure.
14 Se non siete capaci di scrutare la profondità del cuore dell'uomo né di afferrare i pensieri della sua mente, come potreste scandagliare Dio, che ha fatto tutto ciò, conoscere la sua mente e comprendere i suoi disegni? No, fratelli, non provocate a ira il Signore nostro Dio.	14 But forasmuch as the Lord is patient, let us be penitent for this same thing, and with many tears let us beg his pardon:
15 Se egli non vuole soccorrerci nel periodo di cinque giorni, egli ha il potere di difenderci nei giorni che vuole, come anche di distruggerci in faccia ai nostri nemici.	15 For God will not threaten like man, nor be inflamed to anger like the son of man.
16 Voi però non vogliate ipotecare i disegni del Signore, nostro Dio, perché Dio non è come un uomo cui si possano fare delle minacce, o un figlio d'uomo sul quale si possano esercitare delle pressioni.	16 And therefore let us humble our souls before him, and continuing in an humble spirit, in his service:
17 Perciò, attendendo con costanza la salvezza che viene da lui, invochiamolo in nostro aiuto ed esaudirà il nostro grido, se a lui piacerà.	17 Let us ask the Lord with tears, that according to his will so he would shew his mercy to us: that as our heart is troubled by their pride, so also we may glorify in our humility.
18 Invero, nella nostra generazione non c'è stata né esiste oggi tribù o famiglia o popolo o città tra noi che adori gli dèi fatti da mano d'uomo, come avvenne nei tempi passati.	18 For we have not followed the sins of our fathers, who forsook their God, and worshipped strange gods.
19 Per questo i nostri padri furono abbandonati alla spada e alla devastazione e caddero miseramente al cospetto dei loro nemici.	19 For which crime they were given up to their enemies, to the sword, and to pillage, and to confusion: but we know no other God but him.
20 Noi invece non riconosciamo altro Dio all'infuori di lui, onde speriamo che non vorrà disdegnare noi né la nostra nazione.	20 Let us humbly wait for his consolation, and the Lord our God will require our blood of the afflictions of our enemies, and he will humble all the nations that shall rise up against us, and bring them to disgrace.
21 Se noi saremo presi, sarà presa anche l'intera Giudea, sarà saccheggiato il nostro santuario e Dio chiederà conto al nostro sangue di quella profanazione.	21 And now, brethren, as you are the ancients among the people of God, and their very soul resteth upon you: comfort their hearts by your speech, that they may be mindful how our fathers were tempted that they might be proved, whether they worshipped their God truly.
22 L'uccisione dei nostri fratelli, la deportazione del paese, la devastazione della nostra eredità, Dio la farà ricadere sul nostro capo in mezzo alle nazioni pagane, tra le quali diventeremo schiavi; saremo allora motivo di scandalo e di derisione di fronte ai nostri padroni.	22 They must remember how our father Abraham was tempted, and being proved by many tribulations, was made the friend of God.
23 La nostra schiavitù non si volgerà in benevolenza, ma il Signore Dio nostro la volgerà a nostro disonore.	23 go Isaac, so Jacob, so Moses, and all that have pleased God, passed through many tribulations, remaining faithful.
24 Ora pertanto, fratelli, dimostriamo ai nostri fratelli che da noi dipende la loro vita e che le cose sante, il tempio e l'altare riposano su di noi.	24 But they that did not receive the trials with the fear of the Lord, but uttered their impatience and the reproach of their murmuring against the Lord,
25 Oltre tutto ringraziamo il Signore, nostro Dio, che ci mette alla prova, come già i nostri padri.	25 Were destroyed by the destroyer, and perished by serpents.
26 Ricordate quanto fece con Abramo, a quante prove sottopose Isacco e quanto avvenne a Giacobbe in Mesopotamia di Siria, quando pascolava le greggi di Labano, suo zio materno.	26 As for us therefore let us not revenge ourselves for these things which we suffer
27 Come li fece passare al crogiolo per scrutare i loro cuori, così non è che vuole vendicarsi di noi, ma è a scopo di correzione che il Signore castiga quelli che gli sono vicino".	27 But esteeming these very punishments to be less than our sins deserve, let us believe that these scourges of the Lord, with which like servants we are chastised, have happened for our amendment, and not for our destruction.
28 Ozia le rispose: "Tutto ciò che hai detto, l'hai proferito con cuore retto e nessuno può contraddire le tue parole.	28 And Ozias and the ancients said to her: All things which thou hast spoken are true, and there is nothing to be reprehended in thy words.
29 Perché non da oggi è palese la tua sapienza, ma dall'inizio dei tuoi giorni tutto il popolo riconosce la tua prudenza, così come è nobile l'indole del tuo cuore.	29 Now therefore pray for us, for thou art a holy woman, and one fearing God.
30 Ma il popolo soffre tremendamente la sete e ci ha costretto ad agire come noi abbiamo loro promesso e a prendere sopra di noi la responsabilità di un giuramento che non potremo violare.	30 And Judith said to them: As you know that what I have been able to say is of God:
31 Ma ora, prega per noi, perché sei una donna pia, e il Signore invierà la pioggia a riempire le nostre cisterne e noi non verremo meno".	31 So that which I intend to do prove ye if it be of God, and pray that God may strengthen my design.
32 Giuditta rispose loro: "Ascoltatemi! Compirò un'azione che passerà di generazione in generazione ai figli del nostro popolo.	32 You shall stand at the gate this night, and I will go out with my maidservant: and pray ye, that as you have said, in five days the Lord may look down upon his people Israel.
33 Questa notte voi vi troverete alla porta della città e io uscirò con la mia ancella ed entro i giorni, dopo i quali voi avete promesso di consegnare la città ai nostri nemici, il Signore per mano mia visiterà Israele.	33 But I desire that you search not into what I am doing, and till I bring you word let nothing else be done but to pray for me to the Lord our God.
34 Voi però non andate indagando sulla mia impresa, non vi dirò nulla, fino a quando non sarà compiuto ciò che ho in mente di fare".	34 And Ozias the prince of Juda said to her: Go in peace, and the Lord be with thee to take revenge of our enemies. So returning they departed.
35 Ozia e i capi le risposero: "Va' in pace e il Signore Dio sia con te per far vendetta dei nostri nemici".
36 E ritiratisi dalla tenda di lei, se ne andarono ai loro posti.
