Giosuè 11

BIBBIA RICCIOTTI	NEW JERUSALEM
1 - All'udire queste cose Jabin re di Asor mandò [messi] a Jobab re di Madon, al re di Semeron, al re di Acsaf,	1 When Jabin king of Hazor heard about this, he sent word to Jobab king of Merom, to the king ofShimron, to the king of Achshaph
2 ai re del settentrione, che abitavano fra le montagne e nella pianura e a mezzogiorno di Cenerot, e a quelli che erano nella valle e nei dintorni di Dor vicino al mare,	2 and to the kings in the northern highlands, in the plain south of Chinneroth, and those in the lowlandsand on the slopes of Dor to the west.
3 come pure al Cananeo che stava ad oriente e ad occidente, all'Amorreo, all'Eteo, al Ferezeo, al Jebuseo tra le montagne e all'Eveo, che abitava ai piedi dell'Ermon nella terra di Masfa.	3 To eastward and to westward lived the Canaanites: in the highlands, the Amorites, Hittites, Perizzitesand Jebusites; the Hivites, at the foot of Hermon in the area of Mizpah.
4 Essi uscirono in campo con le loro schiere in numero sterminato come l'arena che è sulla spiaggia del mare, con cavalli e carri innumerevoli,	4 They set out with al their troops, a people as numerous as the sands of the sea, with a huge numberof horses and chariots.
5 e stretti tutti ad un sol patto, si riunirono presso le acque di Merom per combattere contro Israele.	5 These kings, having al agreed on a meeting place, came and set up camp together at the Waters ofMerom, to fight Israel.
6 Disse allora il Signore a Giosuè: «Non temere costoro, perchè domani, a questa stessa ora, li darò tutti dinanzi ad Israele, affinchè siano uccisi e tu taglierai i garetti ai loro cavalli e darai al fuoco i loro carri».	6 Yahweh then said to Joshua, 'Do not be afraid of them, for by this time tomorrow I shal hand them alover, cut to pieces, to Israel; you will hamstring their horses and burn their chariots.'
7 Giosuè dunque con tutto l'esercito venne ad incontrarli alle acque di Merom ed irruppe all'improvviso sopra di essi	7 With al his warriors Joshua caught them unawares near the Waters of Merom and fel on them.
8 e il Signore li diede nelle mani d'Israele che li battè e li inseguì fino a Sidone la grande, e fino alle acque di Maserefot e al campo di Masfe, che è ad oriente di essa, e li battè così da non lasciarne alcun superstite,	8 Yahweh put them at Israel's mercy and they defeated them and pursued them as far as Sidon theGreat, and as far as Misrephoth to the west, and as far as the Vale of Mizpah to the east; they harried them untilnot one of them was left alive.
9 ed eseguendo quanto gli aveva comandato il Signore tagliò i garetti ai loro cavalli e diede fuoco ai carri.	9 Joshua treated them as Yahweh had told him; he hamstrung their horses and burned their chariots.
10 Tornato quindi immediatamente su' suoi passi prese Asor e uccise di spada il suo re. Asor poi era stata per l'addietro la città capitale fra tutti quei regni.	10 Joshua then turned back and captured Hazor, putting its king to the sword. Hazor in olden days wasthe capital of all these kingdoms.
11 Passò pure a fil di spada tutti quelli che abitavano colà, non lasciando alcun superstite, ma dando lo sterminio a tutto e appiccando il fuoco alla stessa città.	11 In compliance with the curse of destruction, they put every living creature there to the sword. Not aliving soul was left, and Hazor was burnt to the ground.
12 Prese parimenti tutte le città dei dintorni coi loro re e ne sterminò gli abitanti, come gli aveva comandato Mosè, servo del Signore.	12 Al these royal cities and al their kings Joshua put to the sword in compliance with the curse ofdestruction, as Moses, servant of Yahweh, had ordered.
13 Ad eccezione delle città poste sulle colline e sulle alture, Israele incendiò tutte le città, distruggendo col fuoco la sola fortezza di Asor.	13 Yet of al these towns standing on their mounds, Israel burned none, apart from Hazor, burnt byJoshua.
14 Tutta la preda di queste città e il bestiame venne diviso dai figli d'Israele mentre furono uccisi gli uomini.	14 Al the spoils of these towns, including the livestock, the Israelites took as booty for themselves. Butthey put al the human beings to the sword til they had destroyed them completely; they did not leave a livingsoul.
15 Come aveva comandato il Signore a Mosè suo servo e come aveva ordinato Mosè a Giosuè, questi eseguì tutto, nulla trascurando di quanto il Signore aveva comandato a Mosè.	15 What Yahweh had ordered his servant Moses, Moses in turn had ordered Joshua, and Joshuacarried it out, leaving nothing undone of what Yahweh had ordered Moses.
16 Giosuè dunque prese tutto il territorio montuoso, quello posto a mezzogiorno, quello di Gosen, la pianura, il territorio posto ad occidente, la montagna d'Israele e le sue vallate	16 In consequence, Joshua captured this entire country: the highlands, the whole Negeb and the wholeof Goshen, the lowlands, the Arabah, the highlands and lowlands of Israel.
17 e parte del monte che s'innalza verso Seir fino a Baalgad nella valle del Libano, ai piedi del monte Ermon; prese tutti i re di queste regioni, li percosse e li uccise.	17 From Mount Halak, which rises towards Seir, to Baal-Gad in the Vale of Lebanon at the foot of MountHermon, he captured al their kings, struck them down and put them to death.
18 A lungo dovette combattere Giosuè contro questi re;	18 For many a day Joshua made war on al these kings;
19 non ci fu città che si desse vinta dinanzi ai figli d'Israele, ad eccezione dell'Eveo, che abitava in Gabaon e però tutte furono prese con le armi.	19 no city had made peace with the Israelites except the Hivites who lived at Gibeon; al the rest hadbeen captured in battle.
20 Era volere di Dio che tutti si ostinassero a combattere contro Israele e non avendo meritata alcuna clemenza cadessero tutti e perissero, come aveva comandato Iddio a Mosè.	20 For Yahweh had decided to harden the hearts of these men, so that they would engage Israel inbattle and thus come under the curse of destruction and so receive no quarter but be exterminated, as Yahwehhad ordered Moses.
21 In quel tempo Giosuè venne ed uccise gli Enacim delle montagne di Ebron, di Dabir, di Anab e di tutte le montagne di Giuda e di Israele e ne distrusse le città.	21 Joshua then went and wiped out the Anakim of the highlands, of Hebron, of Debir, of Anab, of all thehighlands of Judah and of all the highlands of Israel; he delivered them and their towns over to the curse ofdestruction.
22 Non lasciò alcun superstite della stirpe degli Enacim nel territorio dei figli d'Israele; solo ne rimasero alcuni nella città di Gaza, di Get e di Azoto.	22 No Anakim were left in the territory of the Israelites, except at Gaza, Gath and Ashdod.
23 Giosuè adunque s'impadronì di tutto il paese, come aveva promesso il Signore a Mosè e quando lo ebbe dato in possesso ai figli d'Israele, assegnando a ciascuna tribù la sua porzione, il paese riposò dalle guerre.	23 Joshua captured the entire country, just as Yahweh had told Moses, and he gave it as heritage toIsrael, to be shared out between their tribes. And the country had rest from warfare.
