Siracide 8

BIBBIA RICCIOTTI	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Non contrastare con l'uomo potente, che tu non abbia a cader nelle sue mani!	1 Do not try conclusions with anyone influential, in case you later fal into his clutches.
2 Non contender con l'uomo ricco, che non t'intenti egli lite.	2 Do not quarrel with anyone rich, in case he puts his weight against you; for gold has destroyed many,and has swayed the hearts of kings.
3 Molti invero ha rovinato l'oro e l'argento, ed è giunto a pervertire persino cuori di re.	3 Do not argue with anyone argumentative, do not pile wood on that fire.
4 Non contrastare con un'uomo linguacciuto, e non accatastar legna sul fuoco di lui.	4 Do not joke with anyone uncouth, for fear of hearing your ancestors insulted.
5 Non trattar [scherzosamente] con un uomo rozzo, perchè non abbia a parlar male della tua progenie.	5 Do not revile a repentant sinner; remember that we al are guilty.
6 Non disprczzare l'uomo che si ritrae dal peccato, nè l'oltraggiare; ricordati che tutti siam meritevoli di castigo.	6 Do not despise anyone in old age; after all, some of us too are growing old.
7 Non mostrar disprezzo all'uomo nella sua vecchiaia, perchè anche tra noi c'è chi invecchia.	7 Do not gloat over anyone's death; remember that we al have to die.
8 Non ti rallegrar di un tuo nemico ch'è morto; ricordati che tutti moriamo, nè vogliamo che altri ne goda.	8 Do not scorn the discourse of the wise, but make yourself familiar with their maxims, since from theseyou wil learn the theory and the art of serving the great.
9 Non sprezzare il racconto de' vecchi, e abbi famigliarità con le loro massime;	9 Do not dismiss what the old people have to say, for they too were taught by their parents; from them youwil learn how to think, and the art of the timely answer.
10 perchè da essi imparerai sapienza e assennatezza, e a servire i grandi senza biasimo.	10 Do not kindle the coals of the sinner, in case you scorch yourself in his blaze.
11 Non trascurare il racconto de' vecchi, perchè essi stessi impararono, da loro padri:	11 Refuse to be provoked by the insolent, for fear that such a one try to trap you in your words.
12 e tu imparerai da loro la saggezza, e a rispondere quando occorre.	12 Do not lend to anyone who is stronger than you are -- if you do lend, resign yourself to loss.
13 Non accender i carboni del peccatore rimproverandolo, chè tu non abbia a restar bruciato dalla fiamma del suo fuoco.	13 Do not stand surety beyond your means; if you do stand surety, be prepared to pay up.
14 Non resistere in faccia a un insolente, perchè non si metta come in agguato contro la tua bocca.	14 Do not go to law with a judge, since judgement wil be given in his favour.
15 Non dare In prestito a uno più potente di te, e se gli hai prestato qualcosa, tienla per perduta.	15 Do not go travel ing with a rash man, for fear he becomes burdensome to you; he wil act as the whimtakes him, and you wil both be ruined by his fol y.
16 Non far cauzione al disopra delle tue forze, e fattala, considerati come uno che dovrà pagare.	16 Do not argue with a quick-tempered man, do not go with him where there are no other people, sinceblood counts for nothing in his eyes, and where no help is to be had, he wil strike you down.
17 Non muover lite a un giudice, perchè conforme al suo avviso giudicheranno la sua causa.	17 Do not ask a fool for advice, since a fool wil not be able to keep a confidence.
18 Non andar per via con un temerario, perchè non faccia pesar su te i suoi guai; se ne va infatti a seconda del suo capriccio, e per la sua follia tu perirai con lui.	18 In a stranger's presence do nothing that should be kept secret, since you cannot tel what use thestranger will make of it.
19 Non far rissa con un furioso e non andar con lui per il deserto; perchè quasi un nulla è per lui il sangue, e dove non c'è [possibilità d'] aiuto, ti abbatterà.	19 Do not open your heart to al comers, nor lay claim to their good offices.
20 Non tener consiglio con gli stolti, perchè non possono amare se non quel che loro piace,
21 Davanti ad un estraneo non far cosa secreta, perchè non sai quel ch'egli sarà per partorire.
22 Non svelare il tuo cuore a ogni uomo, chè mai non te ne ricompensi e ti calunni.
