CATHOLIC PUBLIC DOMAINSAGRADA BIBLIA
In that time, Herod the Tetrarch heard the news about Jesus.1 Por aquela mesma época, o tetrarca Herodes ouviu falar de Jesus.
And he said to his servants: “This is John the Baptist. He has risen from the dead, and that is why miracles are at work in him.”2 E disse aos seus cortesãos: É João Batista que ressuscitou. É por isso que ele faz tantos milagres.
For Herod had apprehended John, and bound him, and put him in prison, because of Herodias, the wife of his brother.3 Com efeito, Herodes havia mandado prender e acorrentar João, e o tinha mandado meter na prisão por causa de Herodíades, esposa de seu irmão Filipe.
For John was telling him, “It is not lawful for you to have her.”4 João lhe tinha dito: Não te é permitido tomá-la por mulher!
And though he wanted to kill him, he feared the people, because they held him to be a prophet.5 De boa mente o mandaria matar; temia, porém, o povo que considerava João um profeta.
Then, on Herod’s birthday, the daughter of Herodias danced in their midst, and it pleased Herod.6 Mas, na festa de aniversário de nascimento de Herodes, a filha de Herodíades dançou no meio dos convidados e agradou a Herodes.
And so he promised with an oath to give her whatever she would ask of him.7 Por isso, ele prometeu com juramento dar-lhe tudo o que lhe pedisse.
But, having been advised by her mother, she said, “Give me here, on a platter, the head of John the Baptist.”8 Por instigação de sua mãe, ela respondeu: Dá-me aqui, neste prato, a cabeça de João Batista.
And the king was greatly saddened. But because of his oath, and because of those who sat at table with him, he ordered it to be given.9 O rei entristeceu-se, mas como havia jurado diante dos convidados, ordenou que lha dessem;
And he sent and beheaded John in prison.10 e mandou decapitar João na sua prisão.
And his head was brought on a platter, and it was given to the girl, and she brought it to her mother.11 A cabeça foi trazida num prato e dada à moça, que a entregou à sua mãe.
And his disciples approached and took the body, and they buried it. And arriving, they reported it to Jesus.12 Vieram, então, os discípulos de João transladar seu corpo, e o enterraram. Depois foram dar a notícia a Jesus.
When Jesus had heard it, he withdrew from there by boat, to a deserted place by himself. And when the crowds had heard of it, they followed him on foot from the cities.13 A essa notícia, Jesus partiu dali numa barca para se retirar a um lugar deserto, mas o povo soube e a multidão das cidades o seguiu a pé.
And going out, he saw a great multitude, and he took pity on them, and he cured their sick.14 Quando desembarcou, vendo Jesus essa numerosa multidão, moveu-se de compaixão para ela e curou seus doentes.
And when evening had arrived, his disciples approached him, saying: “This is a deserted place, and the hour has now passed. Dismiss the crowds, so that, by going into the towns, they may buy food for themselves.”15 Caía a tarde. Agrupados em volta dele, os discípulos disseram-lhe: Este lugar é deserto e a hora é avançada. Despede esta gente para que vá comprar víveres na aldeia.
But Jesus said to them: “They have no need to go. Give them something to eat yourselves.”16 Jesus, porém, respondeu: Não é necessário: dai-lhe vós mesmos de comer.
They answered him, “We have nothing here, except five loaves and two fish.”17 Mas, disseram eles, nós não temos aqui mais que cinco pães e dois peixes. _
He said to them, “Bring them here to me.”18 Trazei-mos, disse-lhes ele.
And when he had ordered the multitude to sit down upon the grass, he took the five loaves and the two fish, and gazing up to heaven, he blessed and broke and gave the bread to the disciples, and then the disciples to the multitudes.19 Mandou, então, a multidão assentar-se na relva, tomou os cinco pães e os dois peixes e, elevando os olhos ao céu, abençoou-os. Partindo em seguida os pães, deu-os aos seus discípulos, que os distribuíram ao povo.
And they all ate and were satisfied. And they took up the remnants: twelve baskets full of fragments.20 Todos comeram e ficaram fartos, e, dos pedaços que sobraram, recolheram doze cestos cheios.
Now the number of those who ate was five thousand men, besides women and children.21 Ora, os convivas foram aproximadamente cinco mil homens, sem contar as mulheres e crianças.
And Jesus promptly compelled his disciples to climb into the boat, and to precede him in crossing the sea, while he dismissed the crowds.22 Logo depois, Jesus obrigou seus discípulos a entrar na barca e a passar antes dele para a outra margem, enquanto ele despedia a multidão.
And having dismissed the multitude, he ascended alone onto a mountain to pray. And when evening arrived, he was alone there.23 Feito isso, subiu à montanha para orar na solidão. E, chegando a noite, estava lá sozinho.
But in the midst of the sea, the boat was being tossed about by the waves. For the wind was against them.24 Entretanto, já a boa distância da margem, a barca era agitada pelas ondas, pois o vento era contrário.
Then, in the fourth watch of the night, he came to them, walking upon the sea.25 Pela quarta vigília da noite, Jesus veio a eles, caminhando sobre o mar.
And seeing him walking upon the sea, they were disturbed, saying: “It must be an apparition.” And they cried out, because of fear.26 Quando os discípulos o perceberam caminhando sobre as águas, ficaram com medo: É um fantasma! disseram eles, soltando gritos de terror.
And immediately, Jesus spoke to them, saying: “Have faith. It is I. Do not be afraid.”27 Mas Jesus logo lhes disse: Tranqüilizai-vos, sou eu. Não tenhais medo!
Then Peter responded by saying, “Lord, if it is you, order me come to you over the waters.”28 Pedro tomou a palavra e falou: Senhor, se és tu, manda-me ir sobre as águas até junto de ti!
And he said, “Come.” And Peter, descending from the boat, walked over the water, so as to go to Jesus.29 Ele disse-lhe: Vem! Pedro saiu da barca e caminhava sobre as águas ao encontro de Jesus.
Yet truly, seeing that the wind was strong, he was afraid. And as he began to sink, he cried out, saying: “Lord, save me.”30 Mas, redobrando a violência do vento, teve medo e, começando a afundar, gritou: Senhor, salva-me!
And immediately Jesus extended his hand and took hold of him. And he said to him, “O little in faith, why did you doubt?”31 No mesmo instante, Jesus estendeu-lhe a mão, segurou-o e lhe disse: Homem de pouca fé, por que duvidaste?
And when they had ascended into the boat, the wind ceased.32 Apenas tinham subido para a barca, o vento cessou.
Then those who were in the boat drew near and adored him, saying: “Truly, you are the Son of God.”33 Então aqueles que estavam na barca prostraram-se diante dele e disseram: Tu és verdadeiramente o Filho de Deus.
And having crossed the sea, they arrived in the land of Genesaret.34 E, tendo atravessado, chegaram a Genesaré.
And when the men of that place had recognized him, they sent into all that region, and they brought to him all who had maladies.35 As pessoas do lugar o reconheceram e mandaram anunciar por todos os arredores. Apresentaram-lhe, então, todos os doentes,
And they petitioned him, so that they might touch even the hem of his garment. And as many as touched it were made whole.36 rogando-lhe que ao menos deixasse tocar na orla de sua veste. E, todos aqueles que nele tocaram, foram curados.
