In that time, Herod the Tetrarch heard the news about Jesus.1 In quel tempo giunse la fama di Gesù alle orecchie del tetrarca Erode,
And he said to his servants: “This is John the Baptist. He has risen from the dead, and that is why miracles are at work in him.”2 il quale disse ai suoi cortigiani: "Questi è Giovanni il Battista che è risorto da morte; infatti i suoi poteri taumaturgici operano in lui".
For Herod had apprehended John, and bound him, and put him in prison, because of Herodias, the wife of his brother.3 Ora Erode, dopo aver preso e messo in catene Giovanni, l'aveva gettato in carcere a causa di Erodiade, la moglie di suo fratello Filippo.
For John was telling him, “It is not lawful for you to have her.”4 Diceva infatti Giovanni: "Non ti è lecito tenerla!".
And though he wanted to kill him, he feared the people, because they held him to be a prophet.5 Pur volendo metterlo a morte, era trattenuto dal timore del popolo che lo teneva per profeta.
Then, on Herod’s birthday, the daughter of Herodias danced in their midst, and it pleased Herod.6 Una volta, in occasione del compleanno di Erode, la figlia di Erodiade danzò in pubblico e piacque tanto ad Erode,
And so he promised with an oath to give her whatever she would ask of him.7 che con giuramento promise di darle qualunque cosa gli avesse chiesto.
But, having been advised by her mother, she said, “Give me here, on a platter, the head of John the Baptist.”8 Ella perciò, istigata da sua madre, chiese: "Dammi qui, su un vassoio, la testa di Giovanni il Battista".
And the king was greatly saddened. But because of his oath, and because of those who sat at table with him, he ordered it to be given.9 Il re ne fu contristato; ma a causa del giuramento e per riguardo ai commensali ordinò che fosse accolta la sua richiesta
And he sent and beheaded John in prison.10 e mandò ad uccidere Giovanni nel carcere.
And his head was brought on a platter, and it was given to the girl, and she brought it to her mother.11 La sua testa fu portata su un vassoio e consegnata alla fanciulla e questa la porse a sua madre.
And his disciples approached and took the body, and they buried it. And arriving, they reported it to Jesus.12 I discepoli di lui vennero a prendere il corpo e gli diedero sepoltura; poi andarono a riferire la cosa a Gesù.
When Jesus had heard it, he withdrew from there by boat, to a deserted place by himself. And when the crowds had heard of it, they followed him on foot from the cities.13 Quando Gesù venne a saperlo, partì di là in barca per appartarsi in un luogo deserto. Saputolo, le folle dalle città si misero a seguirlo a piedi,
And going out, he saw a great multitude, and he took pity on them, and he cured their sick.14 sicché, quando egli giunse, trovò molta gente; allora fu preso da compassione verso di loro e guarì i loro infermi.
And when evening had arrived, his disciples approached him, saying: “This is a deserted place, and the hour has now passed. Dismiss the crowds, so that, by going into the towns, they may buy food for themselves.”15 Fattasi sera, i discepoli si fecero avanti a dirgli: "Il luogo è deserto e l'ora è già passata. Rimanda le folle affinché vadano nei villaggi a comprarsi da mangiare".
But Jesus said to them: “They have no need to go. Give them something to eat yourselves.”16 Ma Gesù rispose: "Non è necessario che se ne vadano; date voi a loro da mangiare".
They answered him, “We have nothing here, except five loaves and two fish.”17 Essi risposero: "Non abbiamo qui se non cinque pani e due pesci".
He said to them, “Bring them here to me.”18 Ed egli disse: "Portateli qui a me".
And when he had ordered the multitude to sit down upon the grass, he took the five loaves and the two fish, and gazing up to heaven, he blessed and broke and gave the bread to the disciples, and then the disciples to the multitudes.19 Egli ordinò alla folla di adagiarsi sull'erba. Poi prese i cinque pani e i due pesci e, levati gli occhi al cielo, recitò la preghiera di benedizione, spezzò i pani e li diede ai discepoli e questi alla folla.
And they all ate and were satisfied. And they took up the remnants: twelve baskets full of fragments.20 Tutti mangiarono a sazietà; degli avanzi portarono via dodici sporte piene.
Now the number of those who ate was five thousand men, besides women and children.21 Or quelli che mangiarono erano circa cinquemila uomini, senza contare donne e bambini.
And Jesus promptly compelled his disciples to climb into the boat, and to precede him in crossing the sea, while he dismissed the crowds.22 Subito dopo ordinò ai discepoli di salire in fretta sulla barca e precederlo sull'altra riva, mentre egli avrebbe congedato le folle.
And having dismissed the multitude, he ascended alone onto a mountain to pray. And when evening arrived, he was alone there.23 Quando ebbe congedato le folle, salì sul monte, in disparte, per pregare.
But in the midst of the sea, the boat was being tossed about by the waves. For the wind was against them.24 Fattasi notte, era là solo, mentre la barca si trovava lontano da terra molti stadi, sbattuta dai flutti; c'era infatti vento contrario.
Then, in the fourth watch of the night, he came to them, walking upon the sea.25 Alla quarta vigilia della notte venne Gesù verso di loro camminando sul mare.
And seeing him walking upon the sea, they were disturbed, saying: “It must be an apparition.” And they cried out, because of fear.26 I discepoli, vedendolo camminare sul mare, furono presi da spavento, pensando che si trattasse di un fantasma, e per paura si misero a gridare.
And immediately, Jesus spoke to them, saying: “Have faith. It is I. Do not be afraid.”27 Ma subito Gesù parlò loro dicendo: "Fatevi animo, sono io; non temete!".
Then Peter responded by saying, “Lord, if it is you, order me come to you over the waters.”28 Allora Pietro lo pregò dicendo: "Signore, se sei tu, comanda che anch'io venga da te sull'acqua".
And he said, “Come.” And Peter, descending from the boat, walked over the water, so as to go to Jesus.29 Ed egli: "Vieni!". Allora Pietro scese dalla barca e si mise a camminare sull'acqua andando verso Gesù.
Yet truly, seeing that the wind was strong, he was afraid. And as he began to sink, he cried out, saying: “Lord, save me.”30 Ma vedendo che il vento soffiava forte, fu preso dalla paura e, poiché cominciava ad andar giù, gridò dicendo:
And immediately Jesus extended his hand and took hold of him. And he said to him, “O little in faith, why did you doubt?”31 "Signore, salvami!". Subito Gesù stese la mano, lo afferrò e gli disse: "Uomo di poca fede, perché hai dubitato?".
And when they had ascended into the boat, the wind ceased.32 Saliti in barca, il vento cessò.
Then those who were in the boat drew near and adored him, saying: “Truly, you are the Son of God.”33 Quelli che erano sulla barca gli si prostrarono davanti esclamando: "Veramente sei Figlio di Dio!".
And having crossed the sea, they arrived in the land of Genesaret.34 Compiuta la traversata, approdarono a Genèsaret.
And when the men of that place had recognized him, they sent into all that region, and they brought to him all who had maladies.35 Gli abitanti del luogo, riconosciutolo, diffusero la notizia per tutta quella regione; e così portarono ogni sorta di infermi
And they petitioned him, so that they might touch even the hem of his garment. And as many as touched it were made whole.36 e lo pregavano di poter toccare almeno il lembo della sua veste; e quanti riuscirono a toccarlo, furono guariti.
