A wise son is the doctrine of his father. But he who ridicules does not listen when he is reproved. | 1 A wise son loves correction, but the senseless one heeds no rebuke. |
From the fruit of his own month, a man shall be satisfied with good things. But the soul of betrayers is iniquity. | 2 From the fruit of his words a man eats good things, but the treacherous one craves violence. |
Whoever guards his mouth guards his soul. But whoever gives no consideration to his speech shall experience misfortunes. | 3 He who guards his mouth protects his life; to open wide one's lips brings downfall. |
The lazy one is willing and then not willing. But the soul of he who labors shall be made fat. | 4 The soul of the sluggard craves in vain, but the diligent soul is amply satisfied. |
The just shall detest a lying word. But the impious confound and will be confounded. | 5 Anything deceitful the just man hates, but the wicked brings shame and disgrace. |
Justice guards the way of the innocent. But impiety undermines the sinner. | 6 Virtue guards one who walks honestly, but the downfall of the wicked is sin. |
One is like the rich, though he has nothing. And another is like the poor, though he has many riches. | 7 One man pretends to be rich, yet has nothing; another pretends to be poor, yet has great wealth. |
The redemption of a man’s life is his riches. But he who is poor cannot tolerate correction. | 8 A man's riches serve as ransom for his life, but the poor man heeds no rebuke. |
The light of the just enriches. But the lamp of the impious will be extinguished. | 9 The light of the just shines gaily, but the lamp of the wicked goes out. |
Among the arrogant, there are always conflicts. But those who do everything with counsel are ruled by wisdom. | 10 The stupid man sows discord by his insolence, but with those who take counsel is wisdom. |
Substance obtained in haste will be diminished. But what is collected by hand, little by little, shall be multiplied. | 11 Wealth quickly gotten dwindles away, but amassed little by little, it grows. |
Hope, when it is delayed, afflicts the soul. The arrival of the desired is a tree of life. | 12 Hope deferred makes the heart sick, but a wish fulfilled is a tree of life. |
Whoever denounces something obligates himself for the future. But whoever fears a lesson shall turn away in peace. Deceitful souls wander into sins. The just are merciful and compassionate. | 13 He who despises the word must pay for it, but he who reveres the commandment will be rewarded. |
The law of the wise is a fountain of life, so that he may turn aside from the ruin of death. | 14 The teaching of the wise is a fountain of life, that a man may avoid the snares of death. |
Good doctrine bestows grace. In the way of the contemptuous, there is a chasm. | 15 Good sense brings favor, but the way of the faithless is their ruin. |
The discerning do everything with counsel. But whoever is senseless discloses his stupidity. | 16 The shrewd man does everything with prudence, but the fool peddles folly. |
The messenger of the impious will fall into evil. But a faithful ambassador shall prosper. | 17 A wicked messenger brings on disaster, but a trustworthy envoy is a healing remedy. |
Destitution and disgrace are for those who abandon discipline. But whoever agrees with a reproof shall be glorified. | 18 Poverty and shame befall the man who disregards correction, but he who heeds reproof is honored. |
The desired, when perfected, shall delight the soul. The foolish detest those who flee from evils. | 19 Lust indulged starves the soul, but fools hate to turn from evil. |
Whoever keeps step with the wise shall be wise. A friend of the foolish will become like them. | 20 Walk with wise men and you will become wise, but the companion of fools will fare badly. |
Evil pursues sinners. And good things shall be distributed to the just. | 21 Misfortune pursues sinners, but the just shall be recompensed with good. |
The good leave behind heirs: children and grandchildren. And the substance of the sinner is preserved for the just. | 22 The good man leaves an inheritance to his children's children, but the wealth of the sinner is stored up for the just. |
Much nourishment is in the fallow land of the fathers. But for others, it is gathered without judgment. | 23 A lawsuit devours the tillage of the poor, but some men perish for lack of a law court. |
He who spares the rod hates his son. But he who loves him urgently instructs him. | 24 He who spares his rod hates his son, but he who loves him takes care to chastise him. |
The just eats and fills his soul. But the belly of the impious is never satisfied. | 25 When the just man eats, his hunger is appeased; but the belly of the wicked suffers want. |
