1 But Eliphaz the Themanite, answering, said:	1 ED Elifaz Temanita rispose, e disse:
2 If we start to speak to you, perhaps you will take it badly, but who can hold back the words he has conceived?	2 Se noi imprendiamo a parlarti, ti sarà egli molesto? Ma pur chi potrebbe rattener le parole?
3 Behold, you have taught many, and you have strengthened weary hands.	3 Ecco, tu correggevi molti, E rinforzavi le mani rimesse.
4 Your words have reassured the wavering, and you have fortified the trembling knees.	4 I tuoi ragionamenti ridirizzavano quelli che vacillavano, E tu raffermavi le ginocchia che piegavano.
5 But now the scourge has overcome you, and you falter. It has touched you, and you are disturbed.	5 Ma ora che il male ti è avvenuto, tu te ne affanni; Ora ch’è giunto fino a te, tu ne sei smarrito.
6 Where is your reverence, your fortitude, your patience, and the perfection of your ways?	6 La tua pietà non è ella stata la tua speranza, E l’integrità delle tue vie la tua aspettazione?
7 Consider this, I beg you: who ever perished being innocent? Or when have the righteous been destroyed?	7 Deh! rammemorati, quale innocente perì mai, Ed ove furono gli uomini diritti mai distrutti?
8 In fact, I have instead seen those who work iniquity and who sow resentments, reap them,	8 Siccome io ho veduto che quelli che arano l’iniquità, E seminano la perversità, la mietono.
9 perishing by the breath of God, and being consumed by the wrath of his spirit.	9 Essi periscono per l’alito di Dio, E son consumati dal soffiar delle sue nari.
10 The roaring of the lion, and the voice of the lioness, and the teeth of young lions have been worn away.	10 Il ruggito del leone, e il grido del fier leone son ribattuti; E i denti de’ leoncelli sono stritolati.
11 The tiger has perished because it does not have prey, and the young lions have been scattered.	11 Il vecchio leone perisce per mancamento di preda, E i figli della leonessa son dissipati
12 Furthermore, a word was spoken to me in secret, and, as if by theft, my ears received the pulse of its whisper.	12 Or mi è stata di nascosto significata una parola, E l’orecchio mio ne ha ritenuto un poco.
13 In the horror of a vision by night, when men are accustomed to be overtaken by a deep sleep,	13 Fra le immaginazioni delle visioni notturne, Quando il più profondo sonno cade sopra gli uomini,
14 fear and trembling seized me and all my bones were terrified.	14 Mi è venuto uno spavento ed un tremito, Che ha spaventate tutte quante le mie ossa.
15 And when a spirit passed before me, the hair on my body stood up.	15 Ed uno spirito è passato davanti a me, Che mi ha fatto arricciare i peli della mia carne;
16 There appeared an image before my eyes, someone whose face I did not recognize, and I heard a voice like a gentle breeze.	16 Egli si è fermato, ed io non ho riconosciuto il suo aspetto; Una sembianza è stata davanti agli occhi miei, Ed io ho udita una voce sommessa che diceva:
17 Should man be justified in relation to God, or will a man be more pure than his Maker?	17 L’uomo sarebbe egli giustificato da Dio? L’uomo sarebbe egli giudicato puro dal suo fattore?
18 Behold, those who serve him are not steadfast, and in his angels he finds imperfection.	18 Ecco, egli non si fida ne’ suoi servitori, E scorge della temerità ne’ suoi Angeli.
19 How much more will those who live in houses of clay, which have an earthly foundation, be consumed like the moth?	19 Quanto più in coloro che abitano in case di fango, Il cui fondamento è nella polvere, E che son ridotti in polvere, esposti a’ vermi?
20 From morning all the way to evening, they will be cut down, and because no one understands, they will be destroyed without ceasing.	20 Dalla mattina alla sera sono stritolati, E periscono in perpetuo, senza che alcuno vi ponga mente.
21 But those who are left behind will be taken away from them; they will die, and not in wisdom.	21 L’eccellenza ch’era in loro non si diparte ella? Muoiono, ma non con sapienza
