1 But Eliphaz the Themanite, answering, said:	1 Élifaz de Téman prit alors la parole:
2 If we start to speak to you, perhaps you will take it badly, but who can hold back the words he has conceived?	2 Si nous tentons de te parler, voudras-tu? Mais qui pourrait se taire?
3 Behold, you have taught many, and you have strengthened weary hands.	3 Vois, tu as prêché à bien des gens, tu rendais la force à celui qui abandonne,
4 Your words have reassured the wavering, and you have fortified the trembling knees.	4 tes mots remettaient sur pied celui qui trébuche, tu affermissais les genoux qui fléchissent.
5 But now the scourge has overcome you, and you falter. It has touched you, and you are disturbed.	5 Et puis, quand vient ton tour, tu faiblis, lorsque c’est toi qui es frappé, tu t’effondres!
6 Where is your reverence, your fortitude, your patience, and the perfection of your ways?	6 Ne dois-tu pas compter sur ton respect du droit, ta vie parfaite n’est-elle pas ta raison d’espérer?
7 Consider this, I beg you: who ever perished being innocent? Or when have the righteous been destroyed?	7 Rappelle-toi: quand donc un innocent a-t-il péri? Où a-t-on vu des hommes droits disparaître?
8 In fact, I have instead seen those who work iniquity and who sow resentments, reap them,	8 J’ai observé ceux qui font le mal: ceux qui sèment le mal sont ceux qui le récoltent.
9 perishing by the breath of God, and being consumed by the wrath of his spirit.	9 Le souffle de Dieu les balaie, le vent de sa colère les anéantit.
10 The roaring of the lion, and the voice of the lioness, and the teeth of young lions have been worn away.	10 Le lion rugit, le léopard donne de la voix, mais au fauve on lui brise les dents.
11 The tiger has perished because it does not have prey, and the young lions have been scattered.	11 Le lion périt faute de proie, et les petits de la lionne vont à l’aventure.
12 Furthermore, a word was spoken to me in secret, and, as if by theft, my ears received the pulse of its whisper.	12 Une révélation secrète est venue jusqu’à moi, mon oreille a perçu son écho furtif.
13 In the horror of a vision by night, when men are accustomed to be overtaken by a deep sleep,	13 Au milieu de fantasmes entrevus dans la nuit à l’heure où le sommeil s’empare des humains,
14 fear and trembling seized me and all my bones were terrified.	14 je fus pris de frayeur jusqu’à en trembler: tous mes os en ont été secoués.
15 And when a spirit passed before me, the hair on my body stood up.	15 Un souffle alors passa sur mon visage, qui fit se hérisser tous les poils de mon corps.
16 There appeared an image before my eyes, someone whose face I did not recognize, and I heard a voice like a gentle breeze.	16 Quelqu’un était là, je n’ai rien reconnu; c’était une forme devant mes yeux. Un silence, puis j’entends une voix:
17 Should man be justified in relation to God, or will a man be more pure than his Maker?	17 “Un humain sera-t-il juste devant Dieu? quel homme sera pur pour Celui qui l’a fait?
18 Behold, those who serve him are not steadfast, and in his angels he finds imperfection.	18 Si Dieu ne se fie pas à ses serviteurs, et même dans ses anges trouve l’erreur,
19 How much more will those who live in houses of clay, which have an earthly foundation, be consumed like the moth?	19 que dire de ceux qui vivent en demeures d’argile, dont les bases même ne sont que poussière et qu’on écrase tout net, comme un insecte?
20 From morning all the way to evening, they will be cut down, and because no one understands, they will be destroyed without ceasing.	20 Entre matin et soir on les a détruits, sans crier gare, ils disparaissent à jamais.
21 But those who are left behind will be taken away from them; they will die, and not in wisdom.	21 On leur a dépiqué leur tente, et ils sont morts avant d’avoir compris.”
