NEW AMERICAN BIBLEVULGATA
The LORD said to Moses,1 Profectusque est populus de Haseroth, fixis tentoriis in deserto Pharan.
"Send men to reconnoiter the land of Canaan, which I am giving to the Israelites. You shall send one man from each ancestral tribe, all of them princes."2 Ibique locutus est Dominus ad Moysen, dicens :
So Moses dispatched them from the desert of Paran, as the LORD had ordered. All of them were leaders among the Israelites;3 Mitte viros, qui considerent terram Chanaan, quam daturus sum filiis Israël, singulos de singulis tribubus, ex principibus.
by name they were: Shammua, son of Zaccur, of the tribe of Reuben;4 Fecit Moyses quod Dominus imperaverat, de deserto Pharan mittens principes viros, quorum ista sunt nomina.
Shaphat, son of Hori, of the tribe of Simeon;5 De tribu Ruben, Sammua filium Zechur.
Caleb, son of Jephunneh, of the tribe of Judah;6 De tribu Simeon, Saphat filium Huri.
Igal (son of Joseph), of the tribe of Issachar;7 De tribu Juda, Caleb filium Jephone.
Hoshea, son of Nun, of the tribe of Ephraim;8 De tribu Issachar, Igal filium Joseph.
Palti, son of Raphu, of the tribe of Benjamin;9 De tribu Ephraim, Osee filium Nun.
Gaddiel, son of Sodi, of the tribe of Zebulun;10 De tribu Benjamin, Phalti filium Raphu.
Gaddi, son of Susi, of the tribe of Manasseh, for the Josephites, with11 De tribu Zabulon, Geddiel filium Sodi.
Ammiel, son of Gemalli, of the tribe of Dan;12 De tribu Joseph, sceptri Manasse, Gaddi filium Susi.
Sethur, son of Michael, of the tribe of Asher;13 De tribu Dan, Ammiel filium Gemalli.
Nahbi, son of Vophsi, of the tribe of Naphtali;14 De tribu Aser, Sthur filium Michaël.
Geuel, son of Machi, of the tribe of Gad.15 De tribu Nephthali, Nahabi filium Vapsi.
These are the names of the men whom Moses sent out to reconnoiter the land. But Hoshea, son of Nun, Moses called Joshua.16 De tribu Gad, Guel filium Machi.
In sending them to reconnoiter the land of Canaan, Moses said to them, "Go up here in the Negeb, up into the highlands,17 Hæc sunt nomina virorum, quos misit Moyses ad considerandam terram : vocavitque Osee filium Nun, Josue.
and see what kind of land it is. Are the people living there strong or weak, few or many?18 Misit ergo eos Moyses ad considerandam terram Chanaan, et dixit ad eos : Ascendite per meridianam plagam. Cumque veneritis ad montes,
Is the country in which they live good or bad? Are the towns in which they dwell open or fortified?19 considerate terram, qualis sit : et populum qui habitator est ejus, utrum fortis sit an infirmus : si pauci numero an plures :
Is the soil fertile or barren, wooded or clear? And do your best to get some of the fruit of the land." It was then the season for early grapes.20 ipsa terra, bona an mala : urbes quales, muratæ an absque muris :
So they went up and reconnoitered the land from the desert of Zin as far as where Rehob adjoins Labo of Hamath.21 humus, pinguis an sterilis, nemorosa an absque arboribus. Confortamini, et afferte nobis de fructibus terræ. Erat autem tempus quando jam præcoquæ uvæ vesci possunt.
Going up by way of the Negeb, they reached Hebron, where Ahiman, Sheshai and Talmai, descendants of the Anakim, were living. (Hebron had been built seven years before Zoan in Egypt.)22 Cumque ascendissent, exploraverunt terram a deserto Sin, usque Rohob intrantibus Emath.
They also reached the Wadi Eshcol, where they cut down a branch with a single cluster of grapes on it, which two of them carried on a pole, as well as some pomegranates and figs.23 Ascenderuntque ad meridiem, et venerunt in Hebron, ubi erant Achiman et Sisai et Tholmai filii Enac : nam Hebron septem annis ante Tanim urbem Ægypti condita est.
It was because of the cluster the Israelites cut there that they called the place Wadi Eshcol.24 Pergentesque usque ad Torrentem botri, absciderunt palmitem cum uva sua, quem portaverunt in vecte duo viri. De malis quoque granatis et de ficis loci illius tulerunt :
After reconnoitering the land for forty days they returned,25 qui appellatus est Nehelescol, id est Torrens botri, eo quod botrum portassent inde filii Israël.
met Moses and Aaron and the whole community of the Israelites in the desert of Paran at Kadesh, made a report to them all, and showed them the fruit of the country.26 Reversique exploratores terræ post quadraginta dies, omni regione circuita,
They told Moses: "We went into the land to which you sent us. It does indeed flow with milk and honey, and here is its fruit.27 venerunt ad Moysen et Aaron et ad omnem cœtum filiorum Israël in desertum Pharan, quod est in Cades. Locutique eis et omni multitudini ostenderunt fructus terræ :
However, the people who are living in the land are fierce, and the towns are fortified and very strong. Besides, we saw descendants of the Anakim there.28 et narraverunt, dicentes : Venimus in terram, ad quam misisti nos, quæ revera fluit lacte et melle, ut ex his fructibus cognosci potest :
Amalekites live in the region of the Negeb; Hittites, Jebusites and Amorites dwell in the highlands, and Canaanites along the seacoast and the banks of the Jordan."29 sed cultores fortissimos habet, et urbes grandes atque muratas. Stirpem Enac vidimus ibi.
Caleb, however, to quiet the people toward Moses, said, "We ought to go up and seize the land, for we can certainly do so."30 Amalec habitat in meridie, Hethæus et Jebusæus et Amorrhæus in montanis : Chananæus vero moratur juxta mare et circa fluenta Jordanis.
But the men who had gone up with him said, "We cannot attack these people; they are too strong for us."31 Inter hæc Caleb compescens murmur populi, qui oriebatur contra Moysen, ait : Ascendamus, et possideamus terram, quoniam poterimus obtinere eam.
So they spread discouraging reports among the Israelites about the land they had scouted, saying, "The land that we explored is a country that consumes its inhabitants. And all the people we saw there are huge men,32 Alii vero, qui fuerant cum eo, dicebant : Nequaquam ad hunc populum valemus ascendere, quia fortior nobis est.
veritable giants (the Anakim were a race of giants); we felt like mere grasshoppers, and so we must have seemed to them."33 Detraxeruntque terræ, quam inspexerant, apud filios Israël, dicentes : Terra, quam lustravimus, devorat habitatores suos : populus, quem aspeximus, proceræ staturæ est.
Ibi vidimus monstra quædam filiorum Enac de genere giganteo : quibus comparati, quasi locustæ videbamur.
